1  . She described all the things she had to do-one was to make her bed-from the moment she woke
up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks.
She was shocked, probably thinking I'd been raised by wolves in a forest.   2  .
Two weeks later she went into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42
years-and nothing bad had happened. "And you know what?" she said. "I don't dry my dishes anymore,
either."
3  . One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was
giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle (原理) about
managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs. The problem is,
many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses
and cars than they do of themselves.   4  .
So what is the solution? There's an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a
daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure,
friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life.   5  . The choice is yours: whatever makes you
feel good about yourself and your life.Take a nap (小憩). Take a walk.Take time to play the piano. Stop
bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill
more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.
A. This woman had made two major breakthroughs (突破).
B. Above all, you needn't do anything for yourself regularly.
C. They put everyone else's needs ahead of their own.
D. However, she went along with my idea.
E. Most people do not take time to relax themselves.
F. The point is to do something for yourself every day.
G. A patient came to see me about the stress in her life.

I'm seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter
and you put things in their bags for them. And carried things to their cars. It was hard work.
While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I
remembered his name and said, "Mr. Castle, how are you?" We talked about this and that. As he left, he said,
"It was nice talking to you, Brett." I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate.
Oh no. He didn't remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put "Irving" down on my name
plate. If he'd have said, "Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?" I'd have been ready for him. There's nothing
personal here.
The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these
was:you couldn't accept tips (小费). Okay, I'm outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the
natural reaction (反应) is to take a quarter and give it me. I'd say, "I'm sorry, I can't." They'd get angry. When
you give someone a tip, you're sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you
expect them to say, "Oh, thanks a lot." When you say, "I'm sorry, I can't." they feel a little put down. They say,
"No one will know." And they put it in your pocket. You say, "I really can't." It gets to a point where you almost
have to hurt a person physically (身体上) to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the
store's belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just could
n't understand the strangeness of some people's ideas. One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and
drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.
I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the
means and could afford to hate it and give it up.

3. The box boy refused to accept tips because _____.
A. customers only gave small tips
B. some customers had strange ideas about tipping

A teenager from Thousand Oaks received a warm welcome as he sailed into Marina del Rey on July 16,
2009, becoming the youngest person to circle the globe by sea alone.
Zac Sunderland arrived in Marina Del Rey with his 36-foot boat Intrepid at about 10 am local time. During
his 28,000-nautical-mile journey, he braved storms, equipment failures and a conflict with suspected pirates
(海盗).
"It's great to be back." Sunderland, of Thousand Oaks, California, said after he was welcomed home by
a group of friends.
Fewer than 250 people have sailed around the globe alone, according to the American Sailing Association,
which certified (证实) Sunderland's feat.
He left Marina del Rey, just south of Los Angeles, on June 14, 2008, and celebrated his 17th birthday at
sea while off Africa's Cape of Good Hope.
His return was delayed near the end of his voyage when his boat had a broken bulkhead (舱壁) in rough
seas off Mexico, forcing him to stop at Puerto Vallarta long enough to wait for his father to fly there to make
repairs.
Another tense moment occurred in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia where the Intrepid was approached by
a suspected a pirated boat.
The intruders fled after a plane flew overhead and Sunderland climbed onto his deck with a gun to keep
them off, said Charlie Nobles, executive director of the association.
Sunderland, who remained in contact with his father by satellite telephone during the voyage, threw the
gun away before entering Mexican waters, where it is illegal to carry private firearms.
He becomes the first person under 18 to travel around the globe by sea alone, and the youngest to date.
The previous record-holder was David Dicks of Australia, who completed his voyage in November 1996 at
the age of 18.
1. Which statement about Sunderland's voyage is TRUE?

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. With the car full of flowers we were going home.
On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow."Buy it," my
wife said at once. "We'll carry it home on the roof rack. I've always wanted one like that."
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the roof rack. It
was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.
In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police
even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, "There's a long line of cars behind. Why don't they overtake, I wonder?" In
fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with
great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One
of the officers came to me.
"Right, sir," he said. "Do you need any more help?"
I was a bit puzzled. "Thanks, officer," I said. "You have been very kind. I live just on the road."
He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. "Well, well," he said, laughing. "It's
a cupboard you've got there! We thought it was something else."

a cupboard, but thanks again." I drove home as fast as I could.

When Father's Day comes from around, I think first of my stepfather. Don't get me wrong. I loved my
biological dad, but he wasn't much of a father to me. It's more like Daddy was his name than what he did.
My stepfather is the best kind of dad. He took us fishing, and when I proved too impatient with a fishing
pole, hooking trees, people on the banks...anything but fishing, he patiently taught me to use a cane pole. His
patience eventually taught me patience. He took us camping, hiking and swimming, too; along the way he
taught us about the plants, animals and out of the way places we were discovering. I discovered peace in
nature, too.
The beach was a favorite destination. I remember my stepfather cooking hot dogs and beans on a little
camp stove, often in a sudden shower, always avoiding sand that spread as I ran back and forth. He also
took us to the circus, and I got to ride an elephant and it interested me a lot. We went to Disney World a lot,
often camping in the park. And one year we took an unforgettable five-week trip from Florida to Wyoming,
across the upper states to Indiana, and back down to Florida. He played with us, too, and told us stories. On
summer evenings when I'd been running barefoot all day and he'd patiently dig out the splinters (刺) from my
feet, I knew I was loved.
My stepfather led me to my future husband at my wedding. I insisted I was not nervous as I held his arm
so tightly that my nails left marks. In a few years, he became the best Grandpa imaginable to our three boys-
taking them fishing and camping, fixing them special foods, teasing them…
My stepfather has plenty of interests of his own. He enjoys fishing and camping, he is good at math, and
he is a wonderful gardener and photographer. But he has always taken time to care for his family-even his
instant family-and that's why I say my stepfather is the best possible Real Dad.
