When you leave school, you_can_breathe_a_sigh_of_relief_and_leave_learning_behind, right?
Wrong! Learning should last a lifetime. You exercise your body to stay strong, and you should exercise
your mind to stay sharp.

An English idiom says, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." But scientists have discovered that
isn't true. Older people can learn, and they should, in order to keep their brain active. Now a new trend
has begun in several states in the US that encourages learning. Adults can attend One Day University.
They can spend a Saturday or Sunday hearing four 70-minute lectures. Each one is given by a top
university professor. One of the original participants said, "It's like a health club for the brain." Also,
universities like MIT have made all of their courses and lectures available online for free! Libraries offer
learning programs too. With so much available, there is no excuse not to learn!
Learning is a habit.Don't leave it behind after you leave school. On the website lifehack.org, author
Scott Young mentions several things to help you.
Always have a book. It doesn't matter if you read fast or slow. Just read.If you read just one book a
week, you'll read 52 over the course of a year. Think of the knowledge you'll gain!
Practice it. As you read, do something with what you've learned. Don't just enjoy the mental exercise.
Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it!
Make a "to learn" list. Compose a "to learn" list for yourself. Maybe you want to speak better English, play the piano, or cook French food. Whatever interests you, put it on your list and then make the time to do it. Teach others. Whatever you learn, teach someone else. You'll not only help others but also
understand what you've learned.

Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this happens, a parent tries to
help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their
bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong.
One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child's leg. He never did
that again.
One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the
other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the
child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child
to do the right thing.
Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion(宗教)tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that
parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.
Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is
wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child's level and taking a more child-friendly approach (方法) can help as well.
1. According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to
punish them is to ________.
A. strike them on the bottom
B. try to help them do the right thing
C. teach them what to do
D. take them to court
2. Which of the following is NOT the problem caused by spanking?
A. It teaches the child to hit others when they offend him or her.
B. The parent may get angry and hit the child too hard.
C. Sometimes parents may use spanking for everything.
D. It makes parents try other ways to make the child do right.
3. Which of the following can best describe the writer's attitude towards spanking?
A. favorable (赞同的)
B. indifferent (不关心)
C. interested
D. unfavorable
4. From this passage, we can conclude that ________.
A. Good children always do the right thing.
B. Parents should try their best to avoid spanking their children.
C. Parents have no choice but to spank their children when they do something wrong.
D. Children can have more than one choice to avoid being spanked.

How to Become a Better Student

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student.
This is not necessarily so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants
to.Here is how.
     Plan your time carefully.

When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After
making the list, you should make a schedule of your time.First arrange your time for eating,
sleeping,dressing,etc..Then decide a good,regular time for studying.Don’t forget to
set aside enough time for entertainment.A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems,
but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.

Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this place, which may be a desk
or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games,
radios or TV!When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.

Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.Really listening in
class means less work later.Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from schools,go over your notes.Review the
important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is
going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next
class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you
will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about the tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you
have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world
won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be overly worried. There are other methods that
might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have
tried these.

The reasons for a person's becoming an alcoholic have often been debated by psychologists and other
scientists. But recent studies suggest that the problem of alcoholism (酒精中毒) should also be the focus
of investigation by biologists.
While such things as hard jobs, boredom, and unhappiness can lead to alcoholism, researchers at a
prominent university have found that there may also be a genetic factor involved in alcoholism. In the study,
children of alcoholic parents were surveyed. The result showed that the children of alcoholic parents were
more likely to become alcoholics themselves than were children of non-drinking parents.
This evidence in itself is not conclusive (令人确信的) about anything. After all, it may be the constant
exposure (接触) and easy access to alcohol that cause the children of alcoholics to become alcoholics
themselves. But there is more evidence. The study found that children born of alcoholic parents but raised
by non-drinking foster (抚养的) parents also were susceptible to alcoholism. This group of offspring (后
代) was more likely to take up drinking than youngsters who were born of and raised by non-drinking
parents.
Other evidence found in the study suggests that environment does not play as important a role in the
development of alcoholism as had been previously thought. The study found that the likelihood of alcoholism
was better predicted from the characteristics of the parents than from such environmental characteristics
as type of job or level of income.
1. What is the main point of the passage?
A. To describe the environment in the development of alcoholism.
B. To study the psychological factor in the development of alcoholism.
C. To describe how the children of alcoholic parents become alcoholics themselves.
D. To describe the close link between genetic make-up and alcoholism.
2. According to the passage, what can bring about alcoholism?
A. Biologists' investigation.
B. Non-drinking parents.
C. Hard jobs, boredom and unhappiness.
D. Foster parents' raising.
3. According to the findings of the study, who would be the most likely to become an alcoholic?
A. A person who had a hard job.
B. A person who was born of alcoholic parents.
C. A person who was raised by drinking foster parents.
D. A person who was born of and raised by non-drinking parents.
4. According to the passage, what should the problem of alcoholism be treated as?

D. An educational problem.
