Like many other small boys, I was fascinated by cars, especially because my oldest brother was a bit
of a car guy and subscribed to cool magazines like Car and Driver and Motor Trend. Every so often, one of those magazines would run an article on the "Car of the Future". They featured unconventional things

     But guess what? All of these things are likely to change in the not-so-distant future. It may not burn
gasoline, I may not have to steer it, and it may be a lot better at not running into things.
Airbags (安全气囊) aren't the be-all and end-all in safety. In fact, considering the recent news about
people occasionally being killed by their airbags in low-speed collisions, they obviously still need some
development. But they aren't going away, and in fact, you can expect to see cars appearing with
additional, side-impact airbags, something some European car manufacturers already offer.
     Better than systems to minimize injury in the event of an accident ,however, are systems that minimize
the likelihood of an accident happening. Future cars may be able to remove many of the major causes of
accidents, including drunk-driving, and tailgating (与前车距离过近). Cars could be equipped with
sensors that can detect alcohol in a driver's system and prevent the car from being started, for example.
As early as next year, you'll be able to buy cars with radar-equipped control systems. If the radar
determines you're closing too quickly with the car in front, it will ease up on the throttle (油门). 
     Will cars eventually be able to drive themselves? There's no reason to think it won't be technically
possible, and Mercedes is working on a system that can brake, accelerate and steer a vehicle down a
highway on its own. Nobody really expects people to give up all control to their cars, but such systems

stop even if the driver suddenly became disabled.

     Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan sees an epidemic (流行病) sweeping across
     America's farmland. It has little to do with the usual challenges, such as flood, rising fuel prices
and crop-eating insects. The country's farmers are getting older, and there are fewer people standing in
line to take their place. National agricultural census (普查) figures show that the fastest-growing group of
farmers is the part over 65. Merrigan is afraid the average age will be even higher when the 2012 statistics are completed.
     Merrigan, a former college professor, is making stops at universities across the country in hopes of
encouraging more students to think about careers in agriculture. Aside from trying to stop the graying of
America's farmers, her work is made tougher by a recent blog posting that put agriculture at No. 1 on a
list of "useless" college degrees. Top federal agriculture officials are talking about the posting, and it has
the attention of agricultural organizations across the country.
     "There couldn't be anything that's more incorrect," Merrigan said. "We know that there aren't enough
qualified graduates to fill the jobs that are out there in American agriculture."
     In addition, a growing world population that some experts predict will require 70% more food
production by 2050, she said.
     "I truly believe we're at a golden age of agriculture. Global demand is at an all-time record
high, and global supplies are at all-time record lows," said Matt Rush, director of the Texas Farm
     Bureau. "Production costs are going to be valuable enough that younger people are going to have the
opportunity to be involved in agriculture."
     The Department of Agriculture has programs aimed at developing more farmers and at increasing
interest in locally grown food. The National Young Farmers' Coalition has also been pushing for state and
federal policy changes to make it easier for new farmers.
     Ryan Best, president of Future Farmers of America, has been living out of a suitcase, traveling
the country and visiting with high school students about careers in agriculture. The 21-year-old Best
hopes his message-that this is a new time in agriculture-will motivate the next generation to turn
around the statistics. "Never before have we had the innovations (创新) in technology which have
led to agriculture in this country being the most efficient it has ever been," he said. "There's really a place
for everybody to fit in."

     Superman had it right if you want to keep something safe, build a mountain fortress (堡垒) above the
Arctic Circle. That's the thinking-more or less-behind the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (地窖). Almost every
nation keeps collections of native seeds so local crops can be replanted in case of an agricultural disaster.
The Global Seed Vault, opened on the far-northern Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, is a backup for the
backups. It's badly needed-as many as half the seed banks in developing countries are at risk from natural
disasters. The vault can hold up to 4.5 million samples, which will be kept dry at about -18℃. Even if the
facility (设施) loses power, the Arctic climate should keep the seeds alive for thousands of years.
     On an unusual old farm in New York City, workers are also storing away the seeds of the future. In this

     Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.
     A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The
dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as
good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee (黑猩猩).
     In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into
20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In
four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists
believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.
     In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with
seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word
the dog had never heard before.
     The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer
by process of elimination (排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even
more impressive.
     Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)

     Australia has passed regulations that will enable more international students to further their education in
the country.    The new measures were released by the Australian Department of Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations in September and will take effect in mid-2012.    As a result, the student visa application process for overseas students has been simplified, and the deposit (押金) required to study in Australia has been reduced. Language requirements for overseas students have also been eased.

many of Wang's student clients (客户) could not start studies in Australia because they did not meet the
language requirements, visa processing took a long time and deposit regulations were tough. The change
in policy is good news for the parents of students wishing to study in Australia, Wang says.   
        A 22-year-old female student surnamed Li, in Beijing, who is planning to do her  postgraduate
studies in Australia, learned about the policy change several weeks ago.    "According to the previous
deposit requirement for my student visa, my family was required to put down 550,000 yuan ($86,850).
Now we only need to prepare 410,000 yuan. This is a relief for my parents," Li says.
      She also says that the two to four years working visa makes her feel much clearer about her study plans.    "I believe several years of working experience abroad will strengthen my competitiveness when I
return to China," she says.    Gaining a competitive advantage is the major reason for Chinese students to
study abroad, according to the report by EIC.
