Quickly, the picture comes alive with hyperlinks (超链接), offering the names of the buildings, towers
and street features that appear in the photo. The hyperlinks lead to information about the history, services
and context of all the features in the photo. You have just hyperlinked your reality.
That might be a little unbelievable, but the technology exists and is no fevered imagination. This is not
a cool small machine invented for the next James Bond movie; this is a working technology just developed
by European researchers. It could be coming to a phone near you, and soon.
This, as the marketing types say, is a game changer. It develops a completely new interface (界面) that
combines web-technology with the real world. It is big and fresh, but it goes much further and has much
greater influence.
The development of the system is most outstanding because image recognition technology has long been
pregnant with promise, but seemed to suffer from an unending labour.
Now MOBVIS has not only developed image recognition; it has also developed more applications for the
technology; and it has adapted it to the world's most popular technology: the mobile phone.
The MOBVIS system completely rewrites the rules for exploration and interaction with your physical
environment. The system begins with panoramas (一连串景象). These panoramas form the basis of a city
database. It can match buildings, towers, banners and even logos that appear in the panoramas.
A user simply takes a picture of the street feature, MOBVIS compares the user's photograph to the
panoramas and then identifies the buildings from the picture you take and the relevant links are returned.
Then you simply click on the Imks, using a touch-screen phone, and the MOBVIS system will provide
information on the history, art, architecture or even the menu, if it is a restaurant, of the building in question.
1. Which is introduced in the passage?
[     ]
A. A new game software.
B A popular mobile phone.
C. A cool small machine.
D. An image recognition system.
2. What can we learn about the new technology?
[     ]
A. It can only be put into use on mobile phones.
B. It is a little unbelievable and just a fevered imagination.
C. It has taken an unending labor to bring the technology into our lives.
D. It will encourage the users to take more pictures of the street features.
3. What is the right order of the operation of MOBVIS?
    a. A city database forms in the system
    b. MOBVIS recognizes the picture and links are returned
    c. A user touches the links on the phone screen
    d. A user takes a picture of the street feature.
    e. MOBVIS provides information in question
[     ]
A. a; e; c; d; b;
B. a; d; b; c; e
C. d; c; e; a; b
D. c; a; e; b; d
4. From the passage, we can infer that _____.
[     ]
A. MOBVIS has already been widely used all over the world
B. the writer is trying to promote the sales of the MOBVIS system
C. this new technology will soon be very popular in our lives
D. the sales of mobile phones will decrease as MOBVIS comes on market

The pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti are chanting. One of them plays a guitar
made from an empty oil tin.Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school
headteachers in the country.
Today, over 70% of Haitian population live without proper food, water, schools, or housing. To
reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals
are provided by the World Food Programme.
"We are so cut off that we have many difficulties," comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school

Have you winterized your horse yet? Even though global warming may have made our climate more mild,
many animals are still hibernating (冬眠). It's too bad that humans can't hibernate. In fact, as a species, we
almost did.
Apparently, at times in the past, peasants in France liked a semi-state of human hibernation. So writes
Graham Robb, a British scholar who has studied the sleeping habits of the French peasants. As soon as the
weather turned cold, people all over France shut themselves away and practiced the forgotten art of doing
nothing at all for months on end.
In line with this, Jeff Warren, a producer at CBC Radio's The Current, tells us that the way we sleep has
changed fundamentally since the invention of artificial (人造的) lighting and the electric bulb.
When historians began studying texts of the Middle Ages, they noticed something referred to as "first
sleep", which was not clarified, though. Now scientists are telling us our ancestors most likely slept in
separate periods. The business of eight hours' uninterrupted sleep is a modem invention.
In the past, without the artificial light of the city to bathe in, humans went to sleep when it became dark
and then woke themselves around midnight. The late night period was known as "The Watch". It was when
people actually kept watch against wild animals, although many of them simply moved around or visited
family and neighhours.
According to some sleep researchers, a short period of insomnia (失眠) at midnight is not a disorder. It
is normal. Humans can experience another state of consciousness around their sleeping, which occurs in the
brief period before we fall asleep or wake ourselves in the morning. This period can be an extraordinarily
creative time for some people. The impressive inventor, Thomas Edison, used this state to hit upon many of
his new ideas.
Playing with your sleep rhythms can be adventurous, as anxiety may set in. Medical science doesn't help
much in this case. It offers us medicines for a full night's continuous sleep, which sounds natural; however,
according to Warren's theory, it is really the opposite of what we need.
1. The example of the French peasants shows the fact that _____.
[     ]
A. people might become lazy as a result of too much sleep.
B. there were signs of hibernation in human sleeping habits.
C. people tended to sleep more peacefully in cold weather.
D. winter was a season for people to sleep for months on end.
2. The late night was called "The Watch" because it was a time for people _____.
[     ]
A. to set traps to catch animals.
B. to wake up their family and neighbours.
C. to remind others of the time.
D. to guard against possible dangers.
3. What does the author advise people to do?
[     ]
A. Sleep in the way animals do.
B. Consult a doctor if they can't sleep.
C. Follow their natural sleep rhythm.
D. Keep to the eight-hour sleep pattern.
4. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
[     ]
A. To give a prescription for insomnia.
B. To urge people to sleep less.
C. To analyze the sleep pattern of modem people.
D. To throw new light on human sleep.

In the United States, there are growing calls to do more to help young people learn skills in financial
education. Some efforts begin in high school. But more and more information is available on the Internet,
not only for young people but also for adults. The goal is to teach about saving, investing (投资) and using
money.
The United States Financial Literacy and Education Commission was established in 2003. This
government group takes charge of financial education efforts through nineteen federal agencies. Information
on financial education can be found at its Web site. The address is MyMoney.gov. It includes links to
agencies that deal with banking, buying a home, investing and other areas.
The National Council on Economic Education has found that seventeen states now require high school
students to take a class in economics. This number has grown from thirteen in 1998. As of three years ago,
half of all states required students to take a class in personal finance. Yet that number has fallen, from
twenty-five to twenty-two. The National Council on Economic Education sells textbooks for grades four
through twelve. It also offers free materials for teachers. The information is available at ncee.net.
Teachers say parents also need to play a larger part in educating their children about money. A recent
study found that seventy percent of college students said they received financial advice mainly from their
parents. Investment companies also offer information. Charles Schwab, for example, has a Web site to help
parents teach their kids about money and investing. The address is SchwabMoneyWise.com.

Read and answer the following questions.
The United States is one of the biggest countries in the world. It has all sorts of geography, from deserts
to beaches, mountains to flatlands. These conditions help create all sorts of weather: mild, moderate and
extreme. Sometimes all in one day! In the summer, some areas get very hot and the air is very wet. But others
have dry air, so the heat does not feel so bad.
In the winter, parts of the country get cold and snowy while others stay warm and sunny. This is the
difference between, for example, New York City on the East Coast and Los Angeles on the West Coast. Yet
even the East Coast has its warm places in winter, like Florida.
The oceans affect weather along the coasts. The Pacific coast has smaller temperature changes and calmer
conditions than along the Atlantic.
Alaska and Hawaii are the only states not connected to the forty-eight mainland states. Alaska is in the
Arctic area, so it gets very cold. Hawaii, out in the Pacific, is warm all year long.
Weather in the central and northeastern parts of the country is affected by cold air from Canada and warm
air from the Caribbean. Conditions can change quickly.
Hurricanes are ocean storms that strike mainly in the Southeast. The hurricane season is, officially, June
through November. Tornadoes are a risk across the country. These are locally severe windstorms. They
generally happen in spring and summer.
In fact, March eighteenth happens to be the eightieth anniversary of the most deadly tornado in United
States history. The nineteen twenty-five"Tri-State Tornado" hit parts of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The
National Weather Service says the horrible twister killed nearly seven hundred people.

Only a small number of office workers have been trained in basic life-saving techniques.
Just 33,526 of London's estimated 3.5 million workers signed up with St John's Ambulance and the British
Red Cross to learn simple first aid last year. The figures coming from a new report show that nine out of 10
people would not know what to do if a colleague was badly hurt, while 72 percent have never attended a
first-aid course.
Doctors describe the situation as appalling and have called for urgent training in schools and the workplace.
Training in first aid should start at an early age and should be taught to everybody at school. First aid is very
important because at best it can save lives and at worst it reduces pressure on hospital rooms. Employers get
anxious when a worker has had some sort of accident in the office or factory and rush them to the
hospital-even if all they require is a bandage.
Last year 20,000 Londoners were trained in first aid by St John's Ambulance, the leading provider in
life-saving courses, and 13,526 were trained by the Red Cross. According to St John's Ambulance, four out of
five parents do not know how to carry out mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (苏醒).
Nick Suggitt, training manager with St John Ambulance, said,"We are training just a tiny part of the number
necessary, and only touching the tip of the iceberg."
"Not enough people know how to save a life, and since many emergencies occur at home or at work, these
skills are often needed to save the life of a friend or a family member."
1.The underlined word "appalling" in the passage probably means ______.
A. surprising
B. terrible
C. rising
D. challenging
2. From the passage, we know that the problem lies in the fact that ______.
A. many people won't provide first aid properly
B. many people are unwilling to take the training
C. most people know nothing or very little about first aid
D. 90 percent of people never attend first-aid courses
3. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
A. about 33,526 workers don't know anything about first aid
B. many people are rushed to the hospital with only slight injuries
C. mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is quite important for parents at home
D. a number of people are trained
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. First-aid Is Very Important

Construction workers in Southern California have made a wild discovery. They were digging at a building
site in San Timoteo Canyon (峡谷) when they unearthed hundreds of ancient animal fossils. Researchers say
the bones hold important clues about the history of the region.
Nearly 1, 500 fossils were recovered from the dusty canyon. The remains are about 1.4 million years old.
They include the bones of a new species of deer, several small rodents (啮齿目动物) and more. A giant cat
fossil was also found. Scientists believe the animal was an ancestor of the saber- toothed tiger. Signs of plant
life were uncovered as well.
"This is a huge find," says Rick Greenwood, a scientist studying the site. "I don't think most people had
any idea that those types of animals were wandering around here more than a million years ago."
San Timoteo Canyon is located about 85 miles from Los Angeles. The area of the canyon where the fossils
were found was once part of a green river valley. Today, the region is dry and plant life is rare.
Most of the fossils are well preserved. Experts say a muddy lake bed may have trapped thirty animals that
wandered over for a drink. The mud helped to protect the animal fossils.
The remains are a million years older than those discovered at the famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
Scientists studying the bones will be able to learn more about how the animals adapted to changes in the
environment.
"We have a confused view of what this time period was like," says another scientist. "A discovery like this
could really be an important contribution."
About 35 different animal species are represented in the fossil collection. Scientists began removing bones
from the site last fall. The project was completed this summer. Starting next year, the fossils will be on display
at the Western Science Center in the nearby city of Hemet, California.
1. What does the passage mainly focus on?
A. The secret of ancient animals' deaths.
B. The preparation for a future fossil exhibition.
C. A great discovery of fossils.
D. The history of San Timoteo Canyon.
2. From what Rick says, we know ______.
A. fossils were discovered in the canyon for the first time.
B. the canyon in ancient times was quite different.
C. more research work will be carried on in the canyon.
D. the river water helped to protect the animal fossils.
3. Compared to the discovery at the La Brea Tar Pits, the canyon-involved fossils ______.
A. are far older
B. include more species
C. are better preserved
D. make experts more confused
4. What do we know about the fossils from the passage?
A. All of them are of new species.
B. Some of them have been destroyed.
C. They were looked for under experts' guidance.
D. They will be on show in the near future.

When Babbage was working at Cambridge, a new idea occurred to him. He wanted to construct a
calculating machine to work out the solutions (解法) to maths problems not only with correctness but
also with a speed beyond the power of any human mind. His machine could solve problems involving
(涉及) long rows of figures in one continuous operation (运算).
In 1822 Babbage exhibited his invention and won a prize from the government. After that, he
immediately started to work on a larger machine designed to solve more difficult problems. Although he
received some money left by his father, the money was not enough to support his design. He wrote to
the government about his plan and was given £2500 to start with, a sum worth much more in those days
than it is now.
Babbage continued his work in London for four years. Then his health broke down, and he had to take
a long holiday abroad. When he returned to London in 1828, he was at the end of his resources. Many bills
remained unpaid. His chief assistant and co-workers quarreled with him and left with many expensive tools.
For one year no work was done. During this period, Babbage, whose mind was always active, suddenly
thought of a completely new idea for the machine. He rushed to meet the government officials to explain his
new idea. But this time, they were unwilling to help him. For eight years, they refused to say whether they
wanted the machine or not, and their final answer was "No."
From 1828 to 1839, Babbage held the position of professor at Cambridge very successfully. But his
greatest work was the unfinished calculating machine which stood covered in dust in his house. It was the
beginning of the modern computer.
1. The machine Babbage designed would solve difficult maths problems ______.
A. in one operation with few mistakes
B. in more than one operation without any mistakes
C. in more than one operation with slight mistakes
D. in one operation without any mistakes
2. Babbage failed to continue his research work in 1828 mainly because _______.
A. he was in poor health
B. he almost ran out of money
C. his co-workers argued with him
D. he spent all his money on his bills
3. Babage explained his new idea to the government officials, expecting that _______.
A. they would agree to his plan
B. they would pay for his new idea
C. they would support him with money
D. they would exhibit his new design
4. From the passage, we can infer that _______.
A. Babbage failed to be a famous scientist at Cambridge
B. Babbage always had new ideas but gave them up easily
C. Babbage always needed support from the government officials
D. Babbage was the first designer of the modern computer
