Did you know that women's brains are smaller than men's? The average women's brain weighs 10% less
than men's. Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more
intelligent (聪明的) than women. Right? Wrong. Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests,
despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, researchers have concluded that it's what's
inside that matters, not just the size of the brain. The brain consists of "grey matter" and "white matter". While
men have more of the latter, the amount of"thinking" brain is almost exactly the same in both sexes.
It has been suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain
are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can
understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time. When it comes to talking to the boss
on the phone, cooking dinner and keeping an eye on the baby all at the same time, it's women who come out
on top every time.
There are other important differences between two sexes. As white matter is the key to spatial (空间的)
tasks, men know better where things are in relation to other things. "A great footballer always knows where
he is in relation to the other players, and he knows where to go," says one researcher. That may explain one
of life's great mysteries: why men refuse to ask for directions … and women often need to!
The differences begin when fetuses (胎儿) are about nine weeks old, which can be seen in the action of
children as young as one. A boy would try to climb a barrier (障碍物) before him or push it down while a
girl would attract help from others. These brain differences also explain the fact that more men take up jobs
that require good spatial skills, while more women speech skills. It may all go back to our ancestors (祖先),
among whom women needed speech skills to take care of their babies and men needed spatial skills to hunt,
according to one research. If all this disappoints you, it shouldn't. "The brain changes throughout our lives
according to what we do with it." says a biologist.
1. Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?
A. Women's brain is 10% less than men's.
B. Grey matter plays the same role as white matter.
C. Grey matter controls thinking in the brain.
D. Both sexes have the same amount of white matter.
2. What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs?
A. Women prefer doing many things at a time.
B. Men do better dealing with one job at a time.
C. Women do not need to tell directions.
D. Men have weaker spatial abilities.
3. Which of the following do you agree with according to the fourth paragraph?
A. Young boys may be stronger than young girls.
B. More women take up jobs requiring speech skills.
C. Women may have stronger feelings than men.
D. Our ancestors needed more spatial skills.
4. What is the writer's attitude in writing this passage?
A. Defensive.
B. Persuasive.
C. Supportive.
D. Objective.

People think children should play sports. Sports are fun, and playing with others. However, playing sports
can have   1   effects on children. It may produce feelings of poor self-respect or aggressive behavior in some
children. According to research on kids and sports, 40,000,000 kids play sports in the US. Of these, 18,000,000
say they have been   2   at or called names while playing sports. This leaves many children with a bad   3   of
sports. They think sports are just too aggressive.
Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are the main   4   of too much aggression
ill children's sports. They believe children   5   aggressive adult behavior. This behavior is then further
strengthened through both positive and negative feedback. Parents and coaches are powerful teachers because
children usually look up to them. Often these adults behave aggressively themselves, sending children the
message that   6   is everything. Many parents go to children's sporting events and shout   7   at other players
or cheer when their child behaves   8  . As well, children arc even taught that hurting other players is   9   or
are pushed to continue playing even when they are injured  10 , the media makes violence seem exciting.
Children watch adult sports games and see violent behavior replayed over and over on television.
As a society, we really need to  11  this problem and do something about it. Parents and coaches  12  should
act as better examples for children. They also need to teach children better  13 . They should not just cheer
when children win or act aggressively. They should teach children to  14 , themselves whether they win or not.
Besides, children should not be allowed to continue to play when they are injured. If adults allow children to
play when injured, this gives the message that  15  is not as important as winning.

A study involving 8, 500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant
when it comes to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a five-
year research project into teenagers and money, arc particularly worrying as this generation of young people
is likely to be burdened with greater debts man any before.
University tuition fees (学费) are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year
and the Government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling.
In the research, the teenagers were presented with die terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed
to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average £ 31.000 by
the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just £ 17,815. The teenagers expected
to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would
be less than £ 10.000. Average debts for graduates are £ 12,363.
Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest,
said. "The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they become aware of them,
the more likely they arc to become responsible, forward-planning adults who manage their finances confidently
and effectively."
Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of
student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki
Fair-weather, aged 15 from St Helens, said that she had benefited from lessons on personal finance, but
admitted that she still had a lot to learn about money.
1. Which of the following can be found from the five-year research project?
A. Students understand personal finances differently.
B. University tuition fees in England have been rising.
C. Teenagers tend to overestimate their future earnings.
D. The students' payback ability has become a major issue.
2. The phrase "to raise the ceiling" in paragraph 2 probably means "______".
A. to raise the student loans
B. to improve the school facilities
C. to increase the upper limit of the tuition
D. to lift the school building roofs
3. According to Stephen Moir, students ______.
A. are too young 10 be exposed 10 financial issues
B. should learn 10 manage their finances well
C. should maintain a positive attitude when facing loans
D. benefit a lot from lessons on personal finance
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many British teenagers do not know money matters well.
B. Teenagers in Britain are heavily burdened with debts.
C. Financial planning is a required course at college.
D. Young people should become responsible adults.

You are from a middle-class family, and live in a normal-size home without any showy possessions, but
you are worried that he will want to live as they do, and wonder if you should move.
Sometimes big pocket money, joyful birthday parties, special playrooms and super-big houses tell you that
your neighbors probably have more money than you do, and that they're not as careful as you are with money,
but you may.
Find that they cook and dig in the garden with their children just as often as you do, talk with them as freely
and read to them every night.
Or you may find that some of these parents stay in one wing of their big house while their child plays by
himself, way off in a wing of his own. In that unfortunate case, he is basically growing up alone without being
looked after properly, but this can happen to a child who lives in a normal-size house, too, if he has a TV, a
computer and a few video games in his room. Even the most caring parent doesn't walk in and out of it to see
what show her child is watching, what Internet site he has found and if he's still playing that video game.
Too much uncontrolled screen time may lead to a certain loss of innocence (天真), but mostly this child
will lose the sense of unity and satisfaction that comes from being in a family.
A neighborhood should also provide you with a sense of unity and satisfaction, and if it doesn't, you might
decide to move. Don't judge your neighborhood too harshly (严厉地), though. There are some things that are
right with almost any neighborhood and some things that are wrong with the best of them-like those super-big
houses. The wealth of their owners-and the way they throw money around-may make your son feel sorry for
himself, unless you help him understand that you and his dad save some of the money, give some to people
who don't have enough and use the rest to pay for whatever the family needs.
Children want-should be provided with-explanations when their parents don't give them what they want.
1. What is the problem with the worried parent in the text?
A. Her house isn't as big as her rich neighbors'.
B. Her son is left alone without anyone in charge.
C. She cannot provide her son with a special playroom.
D. She worried about the effect of her neighbors on her son.
2. In paragraphs 2 and 3, the author seems to agree that parents should _____.

A. spend more time with their children
B. give their children more freedom
C. work hard to lead a richer life
D. set an example for their children to follow

3. By saying "throw money around" (paragraph5), the author means that rich people ______.
A. spend money carelessly
B. save money for their children
C. help the poor people willingly
D. leave money all round the house
4. What is the main idea the author aims to express in the text?
A. Children are unfortunate to have poor parents.
B. Children should enjoy their comfortable life.
C. Children need proper guidance from their parents.
D. Children feel ashamed of themselves in a rich neighborhood.

                                                       How Long Can People Live?
She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a concert in the
neighborhood on her 121 st birthday.
When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world's recordholder. She lived to the ripe old age of
122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span (寿命)? If scientists come up with some sort of pill or
diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150-or beyond?
Researchers don't entirely agree on the answers. "Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn't surprise me if
someone alive today reaches 130 or 135," says Jerry Shay at the University of Texas.
Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees."People can live much longer than we think," he says.
"Experts used to say that humans couldn't live past 110. When Calment blew past that age, they raised the
number to 120. So why can't we go higher?"
The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it's all just guessing."Anyone can make
up a number,"says Rich Miller at the University of Michigan. "Usually the scientist who picks the highest
number gets his name in Time magazine."
Won't new anti-aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for aging would
probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working on treatments that lengthen the
life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life span is about 80 years, says Miller,
"adding another 50 percent would get you to 120."
So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life span is flexible
(有弹性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of the University of Washington." We can get flies to
live 50 percent longer,"he says. "But a fly's never going to live 150 years."Of course, if you became a new
species (物种), one that ages at a slower speed, that would be a different story, he adds.
Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve (进化)their way to longer life?"It's pretty cool to
think about," he says with a smile.
1. What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove to us?
A. People can live to 122.
B. Old people are creative.
C. Women are sporty at 85.
D. Women live longer than men.
2. According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas, ______.
A. the average human life span could be 110
B. scientists cannot find ways to slow aging
C. few people can expect to live to over 150
D. researchers are not sure how long people can live
3. Who would agree that a scientist will become famous if he makes the wildest guess at longevity?
A. Jerry Shay.
B. Steve Austad
C. Rich Miller
D. George Martin
4. What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?
A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.
B. The average human life span cannot be doubled
C. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.
D. New techniques could be used to change flies into a new species

This brief book is aimed at high school students, but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life.
Its formal, serious style closely matches its content, a school-masterly book on schooling. The author,
W. H. Armstrong, starts with the basics: reading and writing. In his opinion, reading doesn't just mean
recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information, digesting it and incorporating it into
oneself just as one digests a sandwich and makes it a part of himself. The goal is to bring the information
back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees. Reading and writing cannot be
completely separated from each other; in fact, the aim of reading is to express the information you have got
from the text. I've seen it again and again: someone who can't express an idea after reading a text is just as
ineffective as someone who hasn't read it at all.
Only a third of the book remains after that discussion, which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for
studying languages, math, science and history. He generally handles these topics thoroughly (透彻地) and
equally, except for some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion (激情)
regarding history. Well, he was a history teacher -if conveyed only a tenth of his passion to his students,
that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across. To my disappointment, in this part
of the book he ignores the arts. As a matter of fact, they demand all the concentration and study that math
and science do, though the study differs slightly in kind. Although it's commonly believed that the arts can
only be naturally acquired, actually, learning the arts is no more natural than learning French or mathematics.
My other comment is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s-none of the references
(参考文献) seem newer than the late 1950s. As a result, the discussion misses the entire computer age.
These are small points, though, and don't affect the main discussion. I recommend it to any student and
any teacher, including the self-taught student.
1. According to Armstrong, the goal of reading is to _____.
[     ]
A. gain knowledge and expand one's view
B. understand the meaning between the lines
C. express ideas based on what one has read
D. get information and keep it alive in memory
2. The author of the passage insists that learning the arts _____.
[     ]
A. requires great efforts
B. demands real passion
C. is less natural than learning maths
D. is as natural as learning a language
3. What is a shortcoming of Armstrong's work according to the author?
[     ]
A. Some ideas are slightly contradictory.
B. There is too much discussion on studying science.
C. The style is too serious.
D. It lacks new information.
4. This passage can be classified as _____.
[     ]
A. an advertisement
B. a book review
C. a feature story
D. a news report

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front
of the television have been devised in the UK.
The shoes-named Square Eyes-contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to
record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to
a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves,
based on the day's efforts.
The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British
teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University
in London, UK. "We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out," she says. "And I
wanted to tackle that with my design."
Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically
switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.
Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts
of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours
of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV
time.
Existing pedometer (计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by
measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking.
But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat.  "It is possible, but it would be a lot of
effort," she says. "That was one of my main design considerations."
1. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to _____.
A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer.
B. deal with overweight among teenagers.
C. enable children to resist the temptation of TV.
D. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs.
2. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?
A. They regulate a child's evening TV viewing time.
B. They determine a child's daily pocket money.
C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.
D. They contain information of the receiver.
3. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion?
A. The exact number of steps to be taken.
B. The precise number of hours spent on TV.
C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.
D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.
4. Compared with other similar products, the new design ___.

A. make it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat.
B. counts the wearer's steps through shaking.
C. records the sudden movement of the wearer.
D. sends teenagers' health data to the receiver.

5. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time
B. Smart Shoes Guarantee More Exercise
C. Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise
D. Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight

Instead of hitting the beach, fourteen high school students traded swimming suits for lab coats last
summer and turned their attention to scientific experiments.
The High School Research Program offers high school students guidance with researchers in Texas
A&M's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jennifer Funkhouser, academic adviser for the Department
of Rangeland Ecology and Management, direst this four-week summer program designed to increase
understanding of research and its career potential (潜能).
Several considerations go into selecting students, including grades, school involvement and interest in
science and agriculture. And many students come from poorer school districts, Funkhouser says. "This is
their chance to learn techniques and do experiments they never would have a chance to do in high school."
Warner Ervin of Houston is interested in animal science and learned how to tell male from female
mosquitoes(蚊子). His adviser, Craig Coates, studies the genes of mosquitoes that allow them to fight
against malaria and yellow fever. Coates thought this experience would be fun and helpful to the high school
students.
The agricultural research at A&M differs from stereotypes. It's "molecular (分子) science on the cutting
edge
," Funkhouser says. The program broadened students' knowledge. Victor Garcia of Rio Grande City
hopes to become a biology teacher and says he learned a lot about chemistry from the program.
At the end of the program, the students presented papers on their research. They're also paid $600 for
their work-another way this program differs from others, which often charge a fee.
Fourteen students got paid to learn that science is fun, that agriculture is a lot more than milking and
plowing and that research can open many doors.
1. The research program is chiefly designed for _____.
A. high school advisers from Houston
B. college students majoring in agriculture
C. high school students from different places
D. researchers at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
2. It can be inferred from the text that the students in poorer areas _____.
A. had little chance to go to college
B. could often take part in the program
C. found the program useful to their future
D. showed much interest in their high school experiments
3. When the program was over, the students _____.
A. entered that college
B. wrote research reports
C. paid for their research
D. found way to make money
4. The underlined expression "on the cutting edge" in paragraph 5 means "on the most _____ position".

The gray-haired lady can't wait to leave the building to search for her dad.Unless watched, she will
walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30years ago.
Not all cases of Alzheimer's disease look like this, but Alzheimer's is a serious disease that is said to be
the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.
It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer's.In the early stages,
people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry.
As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all.
This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.
While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain's nerve fibers (神经纤维), their effect is
certain. Alzheimer's destroys not only the patients, but also spouses (配偶), friends and families.
What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person
examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Though many reasons other
than Alzheimer's disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis (诊断) and treatment may delay some of
the most serious effects.
What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer's disease? A person will
often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease,
you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn't remember you are married.
Life for the Alzheimer's patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses,
bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them
honestly will serve one better than burying them.

1. What can be inferred from the passage about the gray-haired day?
A. She has been living with her father.
B. She was sad about the death of her father.
C. She can't search for her father without being watched.
