Do you sometimes put off doing your homework on a school night to watch TV? A new study says that
middle school students who watch TV or play video games during the week do worse in school. The study
also says that watching TV and playing video games on weekends don't affect school performance that much.
"They could watch a lot on weekends and it didn't seem to connect with doing worse in school," said Dr.
Iman Sharif of Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New York. The study appears in the October issue of
Pediatrics. Researchers drew their conclusions after surveying (调查) 4,500 students in New Hampshire and
Vermont middle schools.
To reach their findings, researchers didn't look at grades or test scores. Instead, they asked students to
rate their own performance on a scale ranging from "excellent" to "below".
Other studies have found a connection between kids' ability to learn and the amount of TV they watch.
One study even found that kids with televisions in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math
and language arts tests than kids without them.
What should a kid do? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends (推荐) that kids watch TV
no more than two hours and that televisions be kept out of children's rooms. Weekend viewing should be
kept to four hours at most each day.
1. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Study Says Students Shouldn't Watch TV on a School Night
B. Watching TV Has an Effect on Children
C. Students Shouldn't Watch TV
D. There Is a Connection Between Watching TV and Study
2. According to Dr. Iman Sharif, _____.
A. watching TV on weekends affects school performance
B. the less students watch TV on weekends, the better they do at school
C. watching TV on weekends doesn't affect school performance
D. the more students watch TV on weekends, the worse they do at school
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Researchers did the survey by studying the students' test scores.
B. Students' learning ability has nothing to do with the amount of TV they watch.
C. Children with televisions in their rooms do better at school than those without them.
D. Children shouldn't watch TV for more than four hours each day at weekends.

In the push to improve education, test scores get most of the attention. Many educators say, "Test scores
shadow other ways in which children can be inspired to learn." Here is a fresh method to ensure students to
make the grade.
● The School
Fairview Elementary School is located in the south side of Modesto, California, where the crime rate is
high. Fairview, with about 1,000 students from kindergarten through to sixth grade, has long suffered from
discipline problems, poor test scores, and a nearly total lack of communication with their parents. These
problems are not surprising because many of the parents-immigrants who work on farms or in factories-speak
little or no English.
● The Method
Since 2002, Fairview Elementary School has been on a five-year program: to keep America strong, children
must be trained to respect many points of view, and understand the five freedoms, such as freedom of speech.
As students learn the rights and responsibilities of a good citizen, they will develop the skills and attitudes
needed to excel in study.
The program has no set classes. Fairview students enjoy "freedoms" other kids might envy (they voted not
to wear school uniforms, for example). They accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class
discussions, and keeping the school clean and safe (Fairview is considered the cleanest of 33 schools in its
district). Different from tradition, there is no hand-raising in class. "Instead," says teacher Deborah Supnet,
"we teach them to listen until the other child stops talking." It is called an exercise in respect.
● ______
Last year, the number of students who performed well in math doubled, from 15% to 30%. Suspension
(停学) rates dropped by 50%. What is particularly encouraging to headmaster Rob Williams is that the school
now has an active parents' group: Parents with a Voice. One of those parents, Laura Malagon, believes that the
program allows her to play a more active role in her children's school life.
1. The passage mainly talks about _____.
A. the disadvantages immigrants face
B. a change in an immigrant school
C. many ways to improve students' qualities
D. a fresh idea that can improve education
2. According to the passage, which was NOT a problem at the Fairview Elementary school?
A. The bad behavior of students.
B. The poor performance of their students.
C. The lack of freedom to speak.
D. The lack of contact with parents.
3. The underlined part "excel in study" in the third paragraph probably means _____.
A. be used to study
B. be good at study
C. reform
D. copy
4. We can add a subheading to the last paragraph in the blank with _____.
A. Signs of Success
B. Future of the School
C. Effort of the Parents
D. Parents with a Voice

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader,
an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grey and blues? Then you are probably
quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined. You
wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists (心理学
家) tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference,
and the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don't choose our favorite color as we
grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you
could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one, and a red dress
rings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing (压抑). Light and
bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder,
and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark gray.
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a
few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find
out what colors they like and dislike. And don't forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when
you choose a piece of handkerchief.

A. one can choose his color preference
B. one is born with his color preference

No matter what he is doing, every human being gives body heat. The usual problem is how to dispose
of
it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the university of Pittsburg set themselves the opposite
problem-how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat
but also the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. The system works so
well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comfortable.
Some parts of most modern buildings-theatres and offices as well as classrooms-are more than heated
by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in the winter. The technique of saving
and redistributing it is called "heat recovery". A few modern buildings recover heat, but the university's
system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others.
Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student
studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students emit more heat than female students, and the larger
a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown
campus would be a hard-working, overweight male genius
.

1. The underlined words "dispose of" in the first paragraph mean _____.
A. reuse
B. collect
C. get rid of
D. place in suitable positions
2. According to the passage, the following statements are true EXCEPT _____.
A. fat, male and hard-working students give off more heat
B. six buildings are heated by the heat system on the Johnstown campus
C. the heat is supplied by human bodies, other heat-omitting objects
D. the heat from human bodies, other heat-omitting objects is only used in cold winter
3. From the passage, we can infer that _____ would produce the LEAST heat.
A. a large female who does not study hard
B. a thin male who studies hard
C. a thin female who does not study hard
D. a large male who studies hard

Astronauts aboard the space station celebrated a space first on Wednesday by drinking water that had
been recycled from their urine (尿), sweat and water got from air. They said "cheers" to NASA workers
on the ground.
The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations on the moon and Mars. It also will save NASA
money because it won't have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttle or cargo rocket.
Besides, it's important as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to six.
The recycling system had been brought up to the space station last November, but it couldn't be used until
samples (样品) were tested back on earth. So when it came time to actually drink up, NASA made a big deal
of it. The three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in two NASA centers that
worked on the system.
"This is something that had been the stuff of science fiction," American astronaut Michael Barratt said
before taking a small mouthful. The taste is worth trying.
The new system takes the combined urine of the crew from the toilet and moves it to a big tank, where
the water is boiled off, and the vapor is collected. The rest of the urine is thrown away. Then the water vapor
is mixed with water from air, and then it goes through filters (过滤器). When six crew members are aboard,
it can make about six gallons from urine in about six hours.
"Some people may find the idea of drinking recycled urine distasteful, but it is also done on earth, but with
a lot longer time between urine and the tap," said Marybeth Edeen, the space station's national lab manager.
The technology NASA developed for this system has already been used for quick water purification after
the 2004 Asian tsunami.
1. According to the text, the recycling system is important because _____.
A. it makes traveling to the moon for the average person possible
B. with it NASA won't need to ship any water up to the space station
C. it protects the environment in space by reducing the amount of waste
D. it can help meet the need for more water after the crew is expanded
2. Which is the RIGHT time order of the following events?
    a. The samples of the recycled water were tested on earth.
    b. Astronauts celebrated the space's first making water from urine.
    c. The recycling system was brought up to the space station.
    d. The technology for the system was used to quickly purify water.
A. a, d, c, b
B. a, c, b, d
C. d, c, a, b
D. d, a, c, b
3. From Paragraph. 5 we can know _____.
A. the process of recycling urine
B. the effect of the recycling system
C. an opinion on recycling urine
D. the theory behind the recycling system
6. What is the best title for the text?
A. Drink up: Space Station Recycles Urine to water
B. New Technology Is Used in the Space Station
C. The Research of NASA Has Made Great Progress
D. Good News: Water Recycled from Urine Tastes Good

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would
admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, "My
spoken English is poor." 1_____ I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems
with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. 2_____ However,
you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long
as you use the words that you know.
3_____ Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet
students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to
be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However,
in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as
quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't
matter. 4_____
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All
that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively
seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to
come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. 5_____
A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.
C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.
D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain "poor"!
F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.
G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned.

This year in your grade you will have a lot of reading to do. You can do more of it in less time if you learn
to read rapidly.
Perhaps you have been told about some habits which keep a person from reading fast and have been strongly
asked to break those habits which you might have.
Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering "yes" or "no" to these questions:
     a. Do you move your lips when reading silently?
     b. Do you point to those words with your fingers as you read?
     c. Do you move your head from side to side as you read?
     d. Do you read one word at a time?
If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold
your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips
move, you will know it and stop them moving.
If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your
right hand. Then you won't have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place
your chin in one hand, and hold your head still.
If you read no more than one or two or three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take
in more words at each glance when your eyes are traveling across the lines of words.
Even if you do read fairly fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the
secret of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read in groups and force your eyes
along the lines of words as fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these two things will
be able to read faster.
1. While reading, you should _____.
A. not hold your books with your hands
B. not keep your head still
C. not use your finger to point to the words
D. do all of the things mentioned in A, B and C
2. You may hold your fingers over your lips when you read so as _____.
A. to feel whether your lips move or not
B. to tell others to be silent
C. to keep yourself from talking to others
D. to hold a piece of paper between them
3. When your eyes travel across the lines of words, _____.
A. you need to read the words out
B. you need look at every word carefully
C. you need to remember every word
D. you need to read several words at a time
4. If you can read fairly fast now, _____.

Is early childhood education really necessary? Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning
through playing to develop the child's physical, sensory (感觉的), communicational and social development.
Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally
trained before they are old enough for the kindergarten.
There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education. Studies have shown that
orphan children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure
in school, and even in life. Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are
more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public
help or go to jail.
There are also negative parts of putting a child in formal education programs too early. Time Magazine online
explains that the younger the child, the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work. I have personally
witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs became frustrated and bored with
school before they finished high school. Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the
better off he or she is, so they push to start childhood education earlier.
Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years,
studies also show that this head start is really a"false start", as the gains are lost in middle and high school years.
It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life's success than early education. Head Start programs have
not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children. Perhaps it is
time to find other ways to close that gap.
1. The government valued the early childhood education in order to _____.
A. develop the children's communication
B. help the children to learn by playing
C. get the children prepared for the kindergarten
D. train the children formally and regularly
2. What can we know about the studies from the second paragraph?
A. Children with good early education may have a rich life.
B. The orphan children are usually unhappy in their life.
C. Children without early education can do well at school.
D. Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.
3. The explanation of Time Magazine online suggests that _____.
A. early childhood education is helpless to the child's grade
B. it is good for young children to receive early education
C. early education can help children follow the grade
D. the younger the children are, the more clever they will be
4. The main idea of the last paragraph is that _____.
A. early childhood education is very necessary
B. Head Start programs have helped children a lot
C. early education is the most important to life's success
D. better ways should be found to help the poor children
5. What attitude does the author hold towards early childhood education?
A. approving
B. opposed
C. objective
D. subjective
