The Gullah people in the southern US have honored their culture for more than 100 years. Living
mainly on the Sea Islands and coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia and Floride, the Gullah people,
an African-American group, have a rich culture including their own language. It is a Creole language
created by slaves who came to the US from the West Africa in the 1800s. It combines West African
languages with English.
For many years efforts have been made to save the Gullah language. One project began in 1979. Its
goal was to translate the New Testament part of the Bible into Gullah. Experts say that it was a difficult
process because Gullah is not a written language. It is a spoken language only.
A team of Gullah speakers began working on the translation to make the Bible easier to understand
for those who spoke Gullah as their main language. The Gullah version is called De Nyew Testament. It
is written in English on one side of the page, and next to it, there is a Gullah translation. De Nyew
Testament
was published by the American Bible Society. The project also received help from the
Summer Institute of Linguistics, Wycliffe Bible Translators, the United Bible Societies and the Penn
Centre .
Experts believe that the translated Bible is a major step towards saving the Gullah language and
traditions. "This is more than a Bible translation," says Robert Hodgson, at the American Bible Society.
"De Nyew Testament raises the Gullah language and culture to a new level." Ardell Greene is a member
of the translation team. She calls the book "a treasure". She says that the Gullah version of the Bible will
be read in churches and will help young people keep the Gullah language alive.

All of us communicate with one another non-verbally, as well as with words. We gesture with
eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else's eyes and look away, shift positions in a chair. These actions
we assume are random and incidental. But researchers have discovered in recent years that there is a
system to them almost as consistent and comprehensive as language.
Every culture has its own body language, and children absorb its difference along with spoken
language. A Frenchman talks and moves in French. The way an Englishman crosses his legs is nothing
like the way a male American does it. In talking, with a future-tense verb, Americans often gesture with
a forward movement.
There are regional idioms too. An expert can sometimes pick out a native of Wisconsin just by the
way he uses his eyebrows during conversation. Your sex, moral background, social class and personal
style all influence your body language.
Usually, the wordless communication acts to qualify the words. What the non-verbal elements
express very often, and very efficiently, is the emotional side of the message. When a person feels liked
or disliked, often it's a case of "not what he said but the way he said it." Psychologist Albert Mehrabian
has come up with this formula: total impact of a message = 7% verbal + 38% gestural + 55% facial.
Experts in kinesics - the study of communication through body movement - are not prepared to spell
out a vocabulary or gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with
someone or rejecting something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. Another example:
When a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man's eyes a little longer than is usual,
it can be a sign of respect and affection; it can be a challenge to the professor's authority; or it can be
something else entirely. The experts look for patterns in the context, not for an isolated meaningful gesture.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
1. What idea does the author aim to convey in paragraph 2?
_________________________________________________________
2. Besides moral background, __________ are the other three factors affecting people's body language.
3. From Albert's formula, we learn that the body language __________.

     Garden Route, South Africa
Take in this fresh sea air in this beautiful coastal setting as you cruise the famous Garden Route in the
Western Cape in South Africa. A wild life break is a must, as is enjoying great meal stops along the route. There are wild life reserves throughout the Garden Route National Park you can swing into and spend a
sleepy morning in a car looking for giraffes and lions. And just over your shoulder in the big blue there are whales to be watched (if the season is right).

Boxing is a fist fighting sport between two matched combatants (对手) wearing padded gloves. A
boxer's primary aim is to land as many blows as possible to the head and torso (躯干) of the opponent,
using strength and speed to dominate the contest. One of the oldest sports still practiced, boxing dates
back to thousands of years ago. Today the sport is popular in many parts of the world and encompasses (包括) both amateur and professional matches.
For most of the 20th century boxing attracted huge fans and media attention in the United States.
Some boxing champions became legendary, larger-than-life figures, such as Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis,
and Muhammad Ali. Criticized to varying degrees throughout its history for its violent nature and high
injury rate, boxing has somehow always managed to survive-and even thrive-as a sport.
Modern boxing regulations are based upon the 12 rules set out by British boxing officials in the
mid-19th century. These rules became known as the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, named after the
8th Marquess of Queensberry, John Sholto Douglas, who sponsored and published them. In addition
to in-the-ring rules, modern boxing also has specific regulations regarding eligibility for the fighters
themselves.
The modern rules for professional and amateur boxing differ, but both types of contests are divided
into time periods called rounds. In professional boxing, each round lasts three minutes; in amateur boxing,
two minutes. A one-minute rest period between rounds is standard. Amateur contests consist of three
rounds; professional contests may consist of up to 12 rounds. A bell is usually sounded by a timekeeper
to begin and end each round.
A key step in making boxing safer and more respectable was the introduction of gloves, ending brutal
bare-knuckle competition. Boxing gloves are heavily padded to soften the impact of the blow and to
protect the hands of the boxer. As an added protection, the hands are taped before being placed in the
gloves, which are essentially huge mittens. Professional gloves usually weigh between 170 and 226g;
amateur gloves average 226 to 340g.

A. to give a general introduction to the sport of boxing
B. to advertise a band of boxing-related product

Chrysanthemums (菊花) are to the fall what tulips are to the spring.
In ancient China, chrysanthemums (or 'mums' for short) were first planted thousands of
years ago. People chose the chrysanthemum as their Flower for October, a symbol of the rest and ease
that followed the season's final harvest. Then they symbolized a scholar in retirement (隐居) and were
one of the four noble plants, along with bamboo, the plum flower, and orchid.

the Fall Flowers." Mums remain the most widely grown pot plant in the country and the largest
commercially produced flowers. Chrysanthemums generally represent cheerfulness and rest. So they are
welcomed throughout the British Isles and North America for any occasion, such as football games and

People celebrate birthdays in almost every country on earth. And they celebrate them in many
different ways.
In China and in Japan, for example, the arrival of New Year is more important than a person's
birthday. So everyone adds a year to celebrate their ages on New Year's Day, instead of on their
birthdays,
In Brazil, the special birthday food isn't cake, but special candles. In China, it's long noodles-for
long life. In Iceland, people have pancakes with candies rolled inside them on birthdays.
In Britain, a birthday is an all-day celebration. At school, the birthday child is lifted up and "bumped"
by his classmates. This means the child is lifted by the feet and arms and bumped to the ground, once for
each year once for good growth. In Israel, the same custom is followed, except the birthday person is
lifted and lowered while sitting in a chair.
In Holland, children not only get presents, but also give things out. They give cakes, cookies and
candles to their classmates and teachers on their birthdays.
In Mexico, it's good luck to give birthday greetings as early in the day as possible. So it's usual for the
birthday child to be woken up at midnight by fiends singing birthday songs.
In India, birthday celebrations also begin before dawn. Prayers and blessings must be said before morning comes.
In Thailand, two tall candles are lighted the night before the birthday. One is as tall as the birthday
person. If it goes out early, it's bad luck. Another customs of Thailand is that they buy live fish and birds
for the birthday person and then the birthday person frees the animals, and it brings good luck.
In Nigeria, people in a certain age group celebrate their birthdays together, on a certain day.
In many countries birthday customs are changing. Old customs are giving way to western style of
birthdays, with candletopped cakes. But one thing never changes-birthdays are special days for everyone!
1. It's a custom to lift and lower the birthday person in a chair in _____.
A. Britain
B. Israel
C. Britain and Israel

Good manners play an important part in maintaining (保持) peace in society. A man with good
manners doesn't hurt others' feelings, and therefore he's on good terms with everyone. In this way he
helps to keep the peace in society.
But a man with bad manners has no respect for others. He uses words carelessly and behaves rudely
towards others and causes a lot of unpleasantness. In the end, he himself will suffer the most. Everyone
avoids him and he is forced to live alone.
To live well in society, money alone is not enough. Even the richest man cannot afford to have bad
manners. He may have enough money to buy all things he wants; but if his manners are bad, he will have
no friends, and no one can live happily without friends.
We should have good manners, for it's human nature to try to get friendship; and friendship has to be
earned (获得)through our own attitude towards others. If we are kind to others, they will be kind to us,
and kindness is the most basic quality of good manners. Bad manners drive away friends as well as our
own family members.
On the other hand, a man with good manners has many friends. He commands the respect of all those who come into contact (联系) with him. He doesn't talk ill about others. Even when he's provoked, he
tries his best not to upset others. He also feels sorry about the weak and the disabled.
There are, however, many people who behave so well outside their homes that they are respected by
everyone outside. But in their own homes they are worse than the devil (魔鬼). Such people cannot be
said to have good manners. Their behavior will soon be discovered by others.
If one's manners are good, one behaves well everywhere, even when one is away from the critical (爱挑剔的) eyes of others. Only such a person can live well in society.
1. People with good manners bring society _____.
A. peace
B. enjoyment
C. respect
D. friendship
2. What does the author mainly want to tell us in Paragraph 4 ?
A. People are born friendly.
B. Bad manners make people lose friends.
C. Money is not the most important.
D. Kind people will be treated kindly.
3. The underlined word "provoked" in the passage may mean _____.
A. tired
B. sad
C. made angry
D. left alone
4. What's the main idea of the passage ?
