talking and then made a shy attempt at a smile. The man in the cart for the disabled needed help to reach
for something, and I got it for him.The smile even transferred (转移) over to him,and he thanked me.
As I drove home,I was smiling. Now I know a smile is a small thing, but what if we all tried to smile a

On some level, I always knew that I wanted to be a doctor-at least from the age of eight or ten years old,
anyway.
Although my father wasn't a doctor, he made his own brand of "house calls. I followed him as he brought
a plate of my mother's home cooking to an elderly man named Frank on all major holidays and when Frank
was sick. As far as I know, their only connection was that Frank was an occasional customer at Dad's small
gas station. Frank's home was a two-room house on the rough side of town with an old front porch (门廊)
where you could fall if you weren't careful. Frank had no relatives and as far as I could tell, no other visitors
either. Through his attitude of caring, my father was teaching me to be a doctor, although neither of us knew
it at the time.
When I was 13, my father developed lung cancer. He brought home a diagram the doctor had drawn
showing where his cancer was and told me that he was going to die. He asked me to take care of my mother
when he was gone. I was an only child. He said he loved me on the night when he died.
When you're 13 and your father dies, you have some choices to make. You can use the situation as an
excuse for letting your actions and grades go down, or you can honor his memory and try to do something
positive with yourself. I focused my energy on my schoolwork and my goal of becoming a doctor.
1. What was the father's "own brand of 'house calls'"?
A. His treatment for Frank's serious illness.
B. Being kind to Frank.
C. His attitude towards the author.
D. His wish that his son would be a doctor.
2. The author did something to realize his dream to be a doctor when _____.
A. Father helped Frank regularly
B. Father developed lung cancer
C. Father asked him / her to take care of Mother
D. Father died
3. What influence did his father's death have on the author?
A. The author began to think seriously about his career.
B. The author was too sorrowful to go on studying.
C. The author used the situation as an excuse to quit school.
D. The author worked harder to achieve his goal of becoming a doctor.
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Father taught the author how to be a doctor by making house calls on Frank.
B. In return for Father's help, Frank usually came up at his gas station.
C. The author had no sisters or brothers.
D. The author was deeply influenced by Father's doctor who treated his cancer.
5. What's the best title for the passage?

B. What Led Me to Be a Doctor

Are you happy?Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today?
Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness. Some have put their hearts and
efforts into their work.Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol.Meanwhile,  untold numbers have
looked for it in the possession of expensive cars,  exotic (异国的)vacation homes and other popular
"toys". Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact:people are looking for a lasting source of
happiness.
Unfortunately,  I believe that happiness escapes from many people because they misunderstand the
journey of finding it.I have heard many people say that,  "I'll be happy when I get my new promotion."
or "I'll be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds." It is dangerous because it accepts that happiness is a
"response" to having,  being or doing something.
In life,  we all experience stimulus (激励) and response.Today,  some people think that an expensive
car is a stimulus,  and happiness is a response;a great paying job is a stimulus,  and happiness is a
response;a loving relationship is a stimulus,  and happiness is a response. This belief leaves us the
thinking and feeling:"I'll be happy when..."
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true.I believe that happiness is a stimulus and a
response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy,  we tend to have more
success in our work. When we are happy,  people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationships.
When we are happy,  we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health.Happiness
is not a response but a stimulus.
Happiness is a conscious choice we make every day of our lives. For unknown reason to me,  many
choose to be painful,  unsuccessful and angry most of the time.Happiness is not something that happens
to us after we get something we want-we usually get things we want after we choose to be happy.

1. From the second paragraph,  we know too many people________.

A. are not happy when they work hard
B. are not happy when they drink or take drugs
C. are happy when they possess their own expensive cars
D. all desire exotic vacation homes

2. Generally speaking,  most people feel happy because ________.

A. they think happiness is rooted in their deep hearts
B. they get what they want to have
C. they get a great paying job
D. they get an expensive car

3. Which of the following is right according to the author?

A. If you want to get what you want,  you first choose to be happy.
B. We should try to get more and then we'll be happy.
C. Most people today are happy.
D. Work is a necessary part in our daily life.

4. From the viewpoint of the author,  happiness is ________.

A. based on our needs
B. unconditional
C. out of reach
D. limited

Every country has many good people who help to take care of others. Some high school and college
students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in a hospital, orphanage (孤儿院) or

They read books to the people who must be in these places or they just visit them and play games or
listen to their problems. Other young people volunteer to collect food or money, or they work in the
homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow
their lawns. There is a group of volunteers to meet almost every need. For boys who no longer have
fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to
baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to know about things that boys usually learn from their
fathers. Every city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go play games or to learn crafts.
Some of these clubs have movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or

WL: It is a school of hip hop, which is the way I like to think of it. It combines Chinese elements and
sounds. I started it off in my last album called Shangrila. And this album combines the music of ethnic
minorities, in China, in Tibet, and in Mongolia. It's beautiful and original to Chinese culture. And this new
album called Heroes of Earth combines Opera and Quen-chu, which are thousand-year-old traditions
also unique to Chinese culture. Very unique instruments, costumes, singing styles. I don't think anyone
has ever done this before in the hip hop world.
2. ______________

Please help! I live in Germany with my wife and three kids. My parents live in the UK. I want my kids
to contact with their grandparents often. The kids all use e-mail, Skype and SMS but my parents won’t. I’ve bought them a laptop, paid for broadband(宽带), given them both mobile phones and a digital
camera, but they won’t use them. My parents say they hate computers and new technology. What can I do with these technophobes
                                                                                                              Daniel, Buremburg, Germany
Actually, the original technophobes were the Luddites, a group of cloth workers in 19th century Britain during the Industrial Revolution. The Luddite cloth workers, who traditionally made cloth by hand, were
worried that machines were going to take away their jobs and way of life. These machines could make
cloth much faster and cheaper than humans. In 1811 and 1812 the Luddites destroyed the machines, but
the British government supported the factory owners. Many Luddites were arrested. Charlotte Bronte’s
novel Shirley will tell your parents all about it.
                                                                                                                         Laura, Valencia, Spain
Laura makes some interesting points, I think. Technophobes has been a common theme in science
fiction. Frankenstein, one of the first science fiction, is a warning of what could happen if humans began to experiment with human life.
                                                                                                             Freda, Copenhagen, Denmark
One thing you could try is to find hardware that is designed for older people to use. An example is the mobiles made by the US company, Jitterbug. Instead of icons(图标) and menus the Jitterbug phones ask users simple “yes/no” questions and have larger keypads. The company realized that there are potentially 100 million older users in the US alone.
                                                                                                                      Graham, Patras, Greece
1. The underlined part “the technophobes” in the passage refers to ______.
A. those who are ready to try new technology
B. those who are addicted to the Internet
C. those who refuse to use modern technology
D. those who are devoted to inventing new things

C. Daniel.
D. Graham.
4. The passage is probably taken from _____.
A. a personal blog
B. a letter between friends
C. a personal diary
D. a speech on new technology
5. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Daniel would buy her parents a novel written by Shirley.
B. Charlotte Bronte wrote about technophobes in her novel Shirley.
C. Daniel would buy her parents cell phones with icons and menus.
D. Daniel worried about her children using e-mails.

Health experts have discovered that adding low-calorie vegetable soup to the start of a meal can
actually help to lose weight.
Because you tend to feel full sooner, you eat less of your main course.
The soup regime was tested by researchers at Pennsylvania State University, led by Dr Barbara Rolls.
They found that when participants in the study ate a first course of soup before lunch they reduced their total calorie intake by 20 per cent, compared with those who did not begin the meal with soup.
But those who favour creamy soups should be careful. Researchers stressed the soup must be
low-calorie and based on stock(菜汤), not cream.
All of the soups tested in the study were made from identical ingredients - chicken stock , broccoli
(硬花甘蓝), potato, cauliflower(菜花)and carrots.
They were mixed together to create four different textures and thickness from separate stock and
vegetables through to pureed soup.
Scientists thought that thick soups with chunks of vegetables which required chewing might be more
filling, but to their surprise they found all forms had the same effect.
The findings were presented to the Experimental Biology conference in Washington, DC, and the
research was part-funded by the National Institutes of Health.
