Filling in company applications forms can become a boring and repetitive task, yet any carelessness
on an applicant's part can draw a negative reaction from readers. Blow it at this stage and you won't get
a chance to persuade them in person, no matter how good you are. Each company or organization usually uses its own specially designed form that, although it generally asks for the same basic information, may
vary in detail.
So the suggestions below will help you to know what to do _______________ what you
should write.
●When visiting future employers, always carry your personal data record with you so that you can readily
search for details such as dates, telephone numbers and other useful information.
●Treat every application form as though it is the first one you are completing-write carefully and neatly.
●Use words that describe each job you have held as fully as possible rather than list only the duties you
performed.
●Particularly describe social activities that show your involvement in the community, or activities in which
you held a teaching or coaching role.
●Pay particular attention if there is a section on the form that asks you to say how your education and past experience have especially prepared you for the position.
Think this through very carefully before you write so that what you say shows a natural progression
from past experience to the job you are applying for. If you can, and if they fit naturally, add a few words
to explain how the position fits your overall career plan.

The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added a communications blackout caused by solar storms.
After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London.
Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of
tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the
telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London.
"The Sun's activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites," said Professor Richard
Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.
At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections (日冕物质抛射) occur in the Sun's atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. "A coronal mass ejection
can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometres per hour. Such events can
expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb
communications," Professor Harrison added. The risk is the greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.
Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available.
The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares (太阳耀斑) and explosions as they occur.
Professor Richard Harrison, the lab's director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early
warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth "If we have
advanced warning, we'll be able to reduce the damage. What you don't want is things switching off for a
week with no idea of what's caused the problem," he said.

1. The phrase "communications blackout" in paragraph 1 most probably refers to____________ during
the 2012 Olympics.

A. the extinguishing of the Olympic torch
B. the collapse of broadcasting systems
C. the transportation breakdown in London
D. the destruction of weather satellites

2. According to the passage, scientists are convinced that __________.

A. the sun’s activities have little to do with the earth
B. the London Olympic broadcasting will be possibly influenced by the 2012 peak of sunspots
C. the 2012 Olympic Games are during the solar maximum of throwing out greatest number of sunspots
D. solar explosion will cause strong storms on the earth

3. What can be inferred about the solar activity described in the passage?

A. The most fatal matter from the corona falls onto Earth.
B. The solar storm peak occurs in the middle of each cycle.
C. It takes several seconds for the charged matter to reach Earth.
D. The number of sunspots declines after coronal mass ejections.

4. According to the passage, NASA will launch a satellite to _________.

A. take images of the solar system
B. provide early warning of thunderstorms
C. keep track of solar activities
D. improve the communications on Earth

5. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

It was the final examination for an introductory English course at the local university. The examination
was two hours long, and exam papers were given to the students. The professor was very strict and told
the class that any exam that was not on his desk in exactly two hours would not be accepted and the
student would fail.
Half an hour into the exam, a student came rushing in and asked the professor for an exam paper.
"You're not going to have time to finish this," the professor stated coldly as he handed the student a

This brief book is aimed at high school students, but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life.
Its formal, serious style closely matches its content, a school-masterly book on schooling. The author, W. H. Armstrong, starts with the basics: reading and writing. In his opinion, reading doesn't just mean
recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information, digesting it and incorporating it
into oneself just as one digests a sandwich and makes it a part of him. The goal is to bring the information
back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees. Reading and writing cannot be
completely separated from each other; in fact, the aim of reading is to express the information you have
got from the text. I've seen it again and again : someone who can't express an idea after reading a text is
just as ineffective as someone who hasn't read it at all.
Only a third of the book remains after that discussion, which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for
studying languages, math, science and history. He generally handles these topics thoroughly and equally,
except for some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion regarding history. Well, he was a history teacher? if conveyed only a tenth of his passion to his students, that was a
hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across. To my disappointment, in this part of the
book he ignores the arts. As a matter of fact, they demand all the concentration and study that math and
science do, though the study differs slightly in kind. Although it's commonly believed that the arts can only
be naturally acquired, actually, learning the arts is no more natural than learning French or mathematics.
My other comment is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s-none of the
references(参考文献)seem newer than the late 1950s. As a result, the discussion misses the entire
computer age.
These are small points, though, and don't affect the main discussion. I recommend it to any student
and any teacher, including the self-taught student.
1. According to Armstrong, the goal of reading is to________.
A. gain knowledge and expand one's view
B. expresses ideas based on what one has read
C. understand the meaning between the lines
D. get information and keep it alive in memory
2. The author of the passage insists that learning the arts_________.
A. is as natural as learning a language
B. demands real passion
C. is less natural than learning math
D. requires great efforts
3. What is a shortcoming of Armstrong's work according to the author?
A. It lacks new information.
B. The style is too serious.
C. There is too much discussion.
D. Some ideas are slightly wrong.
4. This passage can be classified as________.
A. an advertisement
B. news report
C. a feature story
D. a book review

科目: 来源:福建省期末题 题型:阅读理解

No poem should ever be discussed or "analyzed", until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher
or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion
and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing onehears of it.
All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,
finally, the most telling "interpretation(解释)" of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once.
Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting
(背诵)it.
I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than
"analyzing" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students
love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", and "a heightening (提升) of life". It is "an approach to the truth
of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature
more central than it presently occupies.
I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be
forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those, who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things
about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom
for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.
1. What is the better way to have a better understanding of a poem?
A. Discussing it with others.
B. Practising reading it aloud.
C. Hearing the poet read out.
D. Analyzing it by oneself.
2. According to the author, one of the purposes of teaching English is getting students
A. to like poetry
B. to criticize life
C. to enjoy life
D. to teach poetry
3. The underlined word "make room "( in the last paragraph) probably means ____.
A. to build a booth
B. to provide equipment
C. to leave a certain amount of time
D. to set aside enough space
4. The passage is mainly about _______.
A. teaching poetry
B. discussing poetry
C. reading a poem
D. reciting a poem
