阅读理解

     Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for
granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number
of people, __1__
     Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term "friendship". In all cases, two
people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between
them and the reasons for their interest in each other change greatly.
     At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to
know people, __2__Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to
have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background.
     Then, __3__Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than
ordinary friends. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the
wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty making friends. A friendly look with a wrong facial
expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as
unfriendliness.
     Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have
the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinion and interests. The more closely involved people become,
the more they depend on each other. And __4__ Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for
each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion.
     In contrast with marriage, __5__But the support and understanding that results from shared
experiences and affections does seem to create a close and lasting relationship.

     It is a hot summer day, and you feel thirsty. A friend gives you a glass of cold lemonade. How do
you feel when you see the glass? Will you describe your feeling as happiness or as pleasure? I believe
you will say it is a feeling of pleasure. There is a connection between these two kinds of feelings, and
sometimes one causes the other, but they are not the same. Pleasure is more dependent on the five
senses while happiness is independent of them.
     When you are happy, little unpleasant events usually do not disturb you. When you are unhappy, you
feel as if everything is against you. You may compensate_for it by eating chocolate and sweets because
this gives you pleasure, yet you stay unhappy. A person may smoke cigarettes because it gives him
pleasure, yet this does not make him happier, especially if he knows the fact that it is not good for his
health.
     The physical world is always in a changing state. At each moment a new thing is being created,
changed, transformed and then destroyed. This is the normal state of things and no one can change it.
If we stay still in a certain state, we are sure to experience unhappiness sooner or later. On the other
hand, if we adjust to the environment, nothing can influence our moods. Then outer events have nothing
to do with our inner joy of mind.
     The room of the mind is filled with worry or fear. If you are free of thinking about them, the room has been emptied, and then you will see what is happening and experience it. When your mind stays quiet, you will see that happiness comes from the inside.

     A maths talent who won fame this week for giving up a milliondollar prize is living with his mother in
a simple flat in St Petersburg, coexisting on her ￡ 30amonth pension, because he has been
unemployed for many years.
     The Sunday Telegraph tracked down the strange recluse(隐士) who shocked the maths world
when he solved a centuryold puzzle known as the Poincar? Conjecture.
     Grigory Perelman's trouble comes from a split with a leading Russian mathematical institute, the
Steklov, in 2003. When the Institute in St Petersburg failed to reelect him as a member, Dr Perelman
was left feeling an "absolutely ungifted and untalented person", said a friend. He became unconfident
and cut himself off.
     Other friends say he cannot afford to travel to the International Mathematical Union's congress in
Madrid, where many people want him to receive the maths equivalent(等价物) of the Nobel Prize, and
that he is too modest to ask anyone to pay for his trip.
     Interviewed in St Petersburg, Dr Perelman insisted that he was unworthy of all the attention, and
was uninterested in the prize. "I do not think anything that I say can be of the slightest public interest,"
he said. "I am not saying that because I value my privacy, or that I am doing anything I want to hide.
There are no topsecret projects going on here. I just believe the public has no interest in me."
     He continued: "I know that selfpromotion happens a lot and if people want to do that, good luck to
them, but I do not regard it as a positive thing. I realized this a long time ago and nobody is going to
change my mind. Newspapers should be more discerning(有洞察力的) over who they write about.
They should have more taste. As far as I am concerned, I can't offer anything for their readers."
     Dr Perelman has some small savings from his time as a lecturer, but is apparently unwilling to increase
them with the D＄1 million offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
for solving one of the world's seven "Millennium Problems".

     There are many times I feel close to going crazy in Beijing. The overhooting horns and the dangerous
driving of local drivers are slowly driving us cyclists to extinction, here in the bicycle capital of the world.
     What keeps me conscious is my weekly session with some of Beijing's warmest souls. We meet at
the English corner in the Chaoyang Library. There, all topics are open for discussion. We usually talk
about family and business, two Chinese priorities across all age groups, I've discovered. There are
always plenty of requests to explain European religion and culture. Some, however, like one of my older 
students,80yearold Mr Gou, prefer to sing in English.
     Lately we've talked about the 60th anniversary celebrations and I'm lucky in the diversity of ages that
I get a good sample of what China's thinking. Most look forward to the time off, some have been
inconvenienced (by their offices being shut to make way for rehearsals) and some worry about the cost
of it.
     I sometimes feel that even a 60yearold China is still not very well known or understood. Foreign
friends with little time to spare on business and tourist visits to Beijing complain about the similar things:
aggressive driving, bad air and a lot of ostentatious displays of wealth such as big cars, paunches and
loud shirts.
     It's a shame, because those are the conspicuous minority. To know Beijing you have to make an
effort to meet and talk to the majority-the likes of retired Doctor Rose, who runs the English corner, or
Mr Tang, the retired railway station inspector. These are friendly, knowable folks with all the patience
possible to explain and share China with a curious foreigner. I feel very lucky to have them to talk and
listen to.
     They'll likely never-or rarely-step into a Starbucks. Their means are modest and they don't have any
flashy cars to park on the footpath. No, but they'll teach you priceless, disappearing Beijing knowledge
and crafts. They'll invite you to  eat jiaozi and play shuttlecock. And on October 1, I marked the big
60th birthday with them, the ordinary, kind people of Beijing.

     One day, your child will need to earn a living. Kids can get an edge on the work world by starting
early and in doing so they will gain valuable experience working with different people. Also they can
learn about managing money-have some money to spend once they get older, or save for college.
     But first ask yourself, is your child ready to work? Do they have the time, and won't it interfere with
their school work? If they are ready, then here are some jobs for kids to make money.
     BABY SITTER
     If your child likes younger kids, then a baby sitter is a popular choice. Parents often need a good
and reliable baby sitter________. This position can be even expanded into a baby sitting service, by
joining together a group of people who can offer babysitting services to all the parents in the
neighborhood.
     PARENTS HELPER
     A parents helper is similar to a baby sitter. However, if your child is too young to babysit on their
own, a job helping parents is a good opportunity. They can help watch someone's kids and assist with
the feeding, playing, or doing chores around the house. Later, once your child is older, they would likely
have gained some references for regular babysitting work.
     HOUSE CLEANING
     Instead of a parents helper, your child could simply do house cleaning. There are many chores that
would be suitable such as vacuuming, dusting.
     CAR WASHING
     Car washing is a needed service in many communities. Have_your_child_get together_with_a few_
friends to_offer_to_wash_local_cars. As an addition to this business, they can sell items such as coffee,
snack bags and donuts while people wait for their car to be washed. See what other professional car
washes charge in your area, and price the services competitively.
     ANIMAL CARETAKER
     If your child enjoys animals, then try an animal caretaker business. This might involve walking dogs,
dog washing, or general grooming.
     HOUSE AND PET SITTING
     If a neighbor is taking a trip or vacation, then taking care of their house and/or pets may be an
opportunity. This may include watering plants, and any other chores they may need.
