There has been an outpouring of love for a 23yearold disabled woman whose dog was killed in front
of her while a groomer(美容师)tried to trim(修剪)its claws.
Calls and emails came from as far away as the Upper Peninsula and Arizona as well as Oakland and
Macomb counties, offering Laurie Crouch, who uses a wheelchair because of multiple sclerosis(硬化症), everything from dogs to money, such as that from Jason Daly of Roseville who said, "I would like
to buy her a new dog."
A story about the death of Crouch's pet, Gooch, was printed on the front page of Macomb Daily.
Crouch said a groomer tied Gooch up with a collar, and then she and a man sat on the dog to trim its
nails. Gooch died after one claw was trimmed.
Crouch yelled at the groomer to stop when she saw Gooch was struggling to breathe, but she said
she was ignored. "If I could have walked, I would have put my hands on her and pulled her off my dog
and physically stopped her, but I can't do that." Gooch was not a trained service animal, but naturally
helped Crouch by picking up things for her.
"This case is absolute animal abuse(虐待)," Larry Obrecht, division manager of the Oakland County
Animal Shelter in Auburn Hills, said.
People who read the story contacted Oakland Press to offer help. A message,  from Rebecca
Amett of Giggles N Wiggles Puppy Rescue in Roseville, said, "We have puppies to donate…and want
to help the young woman who lost her service dog."
"When Gooch was with me I was happy," Crouch said, "I think I can be happy again but no animal
can replace Gooch. There's never going to be another Gooch out there but I think I will find a dog that
can bring me joy again."
1. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. A disabled woman's service dog.
B. A cruel groomer killed a disabled woman's dog.
C. People's love for a disabled woman who lost her dog.
D. A disabled woman loves to have the dog as company.
2. People called and emailed to________.
A. give their angry voice to the groomer
B. offer help and care to Laurie Crouch
C. tell Crouch how to punish the groomer
D. offer a cure for Crouch's disease
3. Gooch died mainly because ________.
A. the groomer was careless
B. the groomer didn't know how to trim the dog's nails
C. the groomer sat on the dog with another man
D. the dog was wearing a collar
4. What do we know about Crouch's dog?
A. It was a specially trained service dog.
B. It was trained to do many things for people.
C. It was Crouch's only friend.
D. It could offer some help to Crouch.

     根据短文内容,从下框的A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。 选项中有一项为多余选项。
A. How can we build a positive image?
B. Convince yourself of your positive qualities.
C. Facing flaws or weaknesses we should take an active attitude.
D. What is a self-image?
E. Improving self-images will go a long way.
F. Why is it time to set up a positive self-image?

1.

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll
hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve
got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes,
and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the
Olympics, but sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that
believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you built a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.
2.
Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way
you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different
from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they
should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and
your whole world.
3.
The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That
is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubt
s to occur in it.
4.
It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one
flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your
primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re
weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you
don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t
mean it’s true.
5.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and
to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those
you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)
yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!

"Get your hands off me; I have been stolen, "the laptop, a portable computer, shouted. That is a new
solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice when it has
been taken.
The program allows users to display alerts on the missing computer's screen and even to set a
spoken message. Tracking software for stolen laptops has been on the market for some time, but this
is thought to be the first that allows owners to_give_the_thief_a_piece_of_their_mind.
Owners must report their laptop missing by visiting a website, which sends a message to the model:
a red and yellow "lost or stolen" sign appears on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version
(版本)of the software, users can also send a spoken message.
The message can be set to reappear every 30 seconds, no matter how many times the thief closes it.
"One customer sent a message saying, 'You are being tracked. I am right at your door.'" said Carrie
Hafeman, chief executive of the company which produces the program,   Retriever.
In the latest version, people can add a spoken message. For example, the laptop's speaker will say
"Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, report me now."
The Retriever software package, which costs $29. 95 but has a free trial period, has the functions
of many security software programs. Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password if they
fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details.
If a thief accesses the Internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the Internet
service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its location.
Thousands of laptops are stolen every year from homes and offices, but with the use of laptops
increasing, the number stolen while their owners are out has been rising sharply.
Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock down the computer.
1. The expression "to give the thief a piece of their mind" can be understood as "________".
A. to give the thief an alert mind
B. to express the owners' anger to the thief
C. to remind the thief of this conscience
D. to make the thief give up his mind
2. Different from other security software, Retriever can ________.
A. record the stealing process
B. help recognize the lost laptop
C. lock down the computer remotely
D. send a spoken message
3. One function of the program is that it allows the owner to ________ at a distance.
A. change some access details for switching on the laptop
B. turn on the laptop by using the original password
C. operate the laptop by means of alternative password
D. erase the information kept in the stolen laptop
4. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A. With no Retriever, thousands of laptops are stolen every year.
B. A new software provides a means to reduce laptop theft.
C. Retriever has helped to find thieves and lost computers.
D. A new program offers a communication platform with the thief.

Habits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly ,  setting our brains on autopilot and relaxing
into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not choice ,  but habit rules the unreflecting creatures ,”William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the everchanging 21st century ,even the word
“habit” carries a negative meaning.
So it seems contradictory to talk about habits in the same context as innovation ( 创新). But brain
researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits ,we create parallel paths ,
and even entirely new brain cells , that can jump our trains of thought onto new , innovative tracks.
Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit , we can instead direct our own
change by consciously developing new habits. In fact ,the more new things we try , he more creative
we become.
But don't bother trying to kill off old habits ;once those ruts of procedure are worn into the brain ,
they're there to stay. Instead ,  the new habits  we  deliberately press into  ourselves  create parallel
pathways that can bypass those old roads.
“The  first  thing  needed  for innovation is attraction to wonder ,”says  Dawna  Markova , author
of The Open Mind. “But we are taught instead to‘decide’,  just as our president calls himself  ‘the
Decider’.” She adds,  however,  that “to decide is to kill off  all  possibilities but one. A  good
innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilities.”
“All of us work through problems in ways of which we're unaware,”  she says.  Researchers in the
late 1960s discovered that humans are born with the ability to approach challenges in four primary ways: analytically,  procedurally,  collaboratively (合作地) and innovatively.  At the end of  adolescence,
however,  the brain shuts down half of that ability,  preserving only those ways of thought that have
seemed most valuable during the first decade or so of life.
The current emphasis on standardized testing highlights analysis and procedure, meaning that few of
us use our innovative and collaborative ways of thought. “This breaks the major rule in the American belief system-that anyone can do anything,”explains M. J. Ryan, author of the 2006 book This Year I Will
and Ms. Markova's business partner. “That's a lie that we have preserved,  and it fosters commonness. Knowing what you're good at and doing even more of it creates excellence.”This is where developing new habits comes in.
1.Brain researchers have discovered that______.
A.the forming of new habits can be guided
B.the development of habits can be predicted
C.the regulation of old habits can be transformed
D.the track of new habits can be created unconsciously
2.The underlined word“ruts”in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to________.
A.zones
B.connections
C.situations
D.tracks
3.Which of the following statements most probably agrees with Dawna Markova's view?
A.Decision makes no sense in choices.
B.Curiosity makes creative minds active.
C.Creative ideas are born of a relaxing mind.
D.Formation of innovation comes from fantastic ideas.
4.The purpose of the author writing this article is to persuade us________.
A.to give up our traditional habits deliberately
B.to create and develop new habits consciously
C.to resist the application of standardized testing
D.to believe that old habits conflict with new habits

Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries
play games together they will learn to live together.Others say that the opposite is true that international
contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some
truth in both arguments,   but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that
sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of
athletes,   but the Games were also destroyed by incidents caused mainly by minor national competition.
One country received its secondplace medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been
noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match,   as the losers objected to the final decisions. They were
convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents' victory was
unfair.Their manager was quite angry when he said: "This wasn't hockey.Hockey_and_the_International_
Hockey_Federation_are_finished." The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could
result in the disorder of the team for at least three years.
The American basketball team announced that they would not give up first place to Russia,   after a
disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United
States had won,   by a single point,   but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play.A
Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other,   and another player popped it
into the basket. It was the first time the U. S.A. had ever lost an Olympic basketball match.Experts discussed the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.
Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of
the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals,   or in nonnational terms,   might be
too much to hope for.But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism.

1. According to the author,   recent Olympic Games have ________.
A. created goodwill between the nations
B. caused only false national pride
C. hardly showed any international friendship
D. led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred

2. What did the manager mean by saying,   "…Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are
    finished."?
A. His team would no longer take part in international games.
B. Hockey and the Federation are ruined by the unfair decisions.
C. There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.
D. The Federation should not exist.

3. The basketball example implied that ________.
A. too much patriotism was shown in the incident
B. the announcement to make the match long was wrong
C. the appeal jury was too hesitant in making the decision
D. the American team was right in receiving the silver medals

4. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A. The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.
B. Athletes should compete as individuals in the Olympic Games.
C. Sport should be played competitively rather than for the love of the game.
D. International contests are liable for misunderstanding between nations.

     根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。
A. Stay busy.
B. Wear what fits you.
C. You can possibly be attractive.
D. Great posture makes you attractive.
E. Helping others makes you attractive.
F. Attention to others makes you attractive.
1.
It is possible to be an attractive person when you are in a job interview or in a place where you just
want to gain the respect of others. It’s not about how much money you make, and it’s not about your
daddy is. What it is about is some simple things in your life. It just has a lot to do with being confident in
who you are.
2.
Ask questions about others when you stay with them and listen to them patiently. Talking about
yourself all the time shows that you pay no attention to others. Shifting attention from yourself to others
makes you attractive. It indicates that you are humble (谦逊的). If you come across as a know-it-all
(even if you really do know it all), it really pushes people feel that you care, you are humble and you
can be trusted.
3.

Have you ever seen a potentially very attractive person, but he has terrible posture (姿势)?It’s
all ruined, isn’t it? Or perhaps you have seen someone who may be quite ugly but he has great posture
and so suddenly he is really attractive? It’s true. Your posture says a lot about you - it says whether
you have confidence, or simply if you really care. Talking physically, it is one of the most important
physical characteristics you need.
4.

Keeping doing things shows that you have power. You’re told to stay busy to ward off (防止,
避免) depression and feelings of anxiety. But did you know you should also stay busy to be really
attractive? It’s true. Always have something to do. Have you ever seen someone just sitting around,
doing nothing? How unattractive! Always be busy with something, Even if for some reason you have
to make something up.
5.
Wear clothes that fit you. Too tight, people are distracted. Too loose, you just look sloppy
(肥大而难看的). For women, wearing tight pants or shirts is not attractive. Slightly loose things are
best, or other things that just fit you and your shape well but not tight. Men and women with taste and
style really don’t know why some guys think their pants sagging down are somehow attractive. It just
tells people you don’t really care. You are following the crowd. Wear things that fit you nicely.
