Going to outer space is a little like going camping. You have to carry with you all the food and
equipment you need for your trip, so your food can't be too heavy or hard to prepare.Plus, there are
no refrigerators to keep food cold and fresh.
Food with all the water dried out is lightweight and doesn't spoil. So, many space foods are dried
on Earth and stored in special packets. Some, such as dried pears, taste good right out of the packet.
But to eat the turkey in this outerspace Thanksgiving dinner, an astronaut must add water and heat the
packets.
On Earth, gravity is the force that keeps your feet on the ground and your sandwich on your plate.
But there's no gravity in space. To keep food from floating away, astronauts on the Space Shuttle attach
the packets to a special tray. The tray can be fixed to a wall or to the astronaut's lap.To prepare their
food, astronauts use liquid forms of salt and pepper. The liquid sticks to the food better.Regular salt
and pepper would float away, maybe up an astronaut's nose.Achoo!
Liquids float right out of cups and glasses, though. So astronauts drink everything from a small bag
with a straw(饮料吸管) that can be closed.Astronauts say that most space foods taste pretty good.
Some, such as apples and pudding are the same as the foods you eat on Earth.
Astronauts eat tortillas(玉米粉圆饼) instead of bread because they make fewer crumbs(碎屑).
Floating crumbs could get stuck in equipment or an astronaut's eye.
Your body uses food in space the same way it does on Earth.Your body must get rid of waste in
space too.
During take off and landing, astronauts can't leave their seats to go to the bathroom. They wear
diapers(尿布) under their spacesuits instead.
The Space Shuttle has a bathroom the size of a small closet. The toilet has bars that keep astronauts
from floating away.
A strong flow of air is used instead of water to flush waste down the toilet.Back on Earth it's flushed
away-or sometimes studied by scientists.

1. Why do astronauts use liquid forms of salt and pepper to prepare food?
A. Liquid doesn't spoil.
B. Liquid is convenient to use in space.
C. Liquid is lightweight.
D. Astronauts are in great need of water.

2. What do astronauts think of space foods?
A. Most of them taste pleasant.
B. They are mostly fruits.
C. Most of them are cold.
D. They contain little meat.

3. Why don't astronauts eat bread?
A. Bread tastes bad.
B. Tiny pieces may float.
C. Bread weights heavy.
D. Bread is rather hard to prepare.

4. We can infer from the passage that astronauts ______.
A. drink from cups and glasses
B. always wear diapers in space
C. can move freely during landing
D. must pay attention to the crumbs in space

The karaoke machine is the most annoying invention in Britain,a survey (民意调查) for the
government found. It found that the Japanese invention topped a list of inventions that people
wished had never been invented.
2,584 adults were surveyed in England online.Among them,22 percent chose the karaoke
machine.17 percent said 24-hour sports channels,12 percent chose video games,while 11
percent said mobile phones and seven percent said alarm clocks."Seeing the karaoke machine
at the top of that list made me smile," said Kane Kramer,a director at the British Inventors
Society.
"When people are singing karaoke, they are enjoying themselves, but as a member of the
audience you are just watching somebody who can't perform for as long as you can bear it.
It is antisocial (令人讨厌的).You might have 10 people who want to sing some karaoke,
which means 150 people have to suffer it.But the crazy thing is that people still do go just to
be a listener at other people's inability to sing. After a short while-unless they're very drunk
they're going to find that listening to performers failing to perform for two hours is not the best
way to spend the evening."
Karaoke has turned into a very large industry since being invented in 1971 by Daisuke
Inoue,a worker in a club in Japan who was looking to provide music for a customer who
wanted to sing on a company trip.
Asked what people would like to see invented in the future,18 percent said a robot cleaner
and 16 percent said a time machine.Asked what the most important safety inventions were,
69 percent said the smoke alarm,64 percent said seat belts and 29 percent said baby seats.

Who says Americans worship the almighty (全能的) dollar? It's not true. Having enough free time is
more important to most Americans than being rich, according to a new survey.
Only 13 percent of more than 2,400 people questioned in the telephone survey ranked being wealthy
as most important to them, while 67 percent ranked free time as their top priority (优先考虑的事),
higher than having a successful career, getting married, and having children. "Everyone wants free time to
do the things they want to do, young, middle-aged or old," said Richard Morin, of the Pew Social ~ Demographic Trends Project, which conducted the survey. "So our desire to play unites us."
The survey also showed that people who were educated in university valued career success over wealth, so did middle-aged people. Not surprisingly, those who didn't have money, ranked wealth very highly.
This included minorities, first generation Americans and less educated people. The survey also revealed
that a disproportionate (不成比例的) number of people under the age of 30 and retired people in the
group made $ 20,000 or less a year. But the emphasis on wealth lessens with age, with younger people
putting value on it but hardly any seniors. "It just diminishes (减弱) with time as the reality sets in that
you would never be rich," Morin said. "But also, as for old people the reality sets in that you don't have
to be rich to lead a very comfortable and fulfilling life. "
While wealth was not at the top of people's list of priorities, 43 percent still said it was somewhat
important.

High School in Modesto, California.
Alicia, who spent her summer at her dad's house, said that there would be no point in getting a job."The
drive to my workplace is so long that I would hardly be making any profit because all my money would be
going toward gas,"she said.
Teenagers are now forced to give up the pleasure of driving around the town without purpose."Instead
of driving around looking for something to do, I now find myself planning the way in advance so I don't

are teenagers doing in order to conserve gas? Alicia saves gas by doing all of her things at one time so she
doesn't have to go home and leave again.
"I try to do it all in one trip so I don't have to always be running around and wasting gas,"she said. "I know
that when I go to lunch with my friends, we make sure to go somewhere near all of our houses so we save

Have you ever been to the beautiful country of Holland and its capital Amsterdam? Anyone who has traveled
to Amsterdam would probably agree on one thing: Amsterdam's story is a tale of two cities-one during the day
and a completely different one at night.
During the day, the largest city in the Netherlands sits quietly on the Amstel River. You can rent a bicycle,
visit the Van Gogh or Anne Frank museum, or take a water taxi. But when the sun goes down, the partying
begins. In the big clubs and in coffee shops, tourists gather to hang out, talk politics and smoke. Several areas
of the city clearly show the two worlds that rule Amsterdam. And they're all within a short cab ride of each
other. For example, Dam Square attracts daytime sightseers to its festivals, open markets, concerts and other
events.
Several beautiful and very popular hotels can be found there. And there's the Royal Palace and the Magna
Plaza shopping mall.
But at night party-seekers come to the square. Hip hop or funk music is heard there. So if you come, be
ready to dance. The clubs don't shut down until 4 am. And while you're there, check out the various
inexpensive ways to tour the city. Don't worry about getting lost. Although Dutch is the official language, most
people in Amsterdam speak English and are happy to help you with directions.
And you'll notice that half the people in the streets are on bicycles they rent.
Amsterdam also has a well-planned canal system. For about 10 dollars, you can use the canal bus or a
water taxi to cruise (巡游) the "Venice of the North".
The city has a historic past. One impressive place to visit is the Anne Frank House on Nine Streets. It was
there that the young Jewish girl wrote her famous diary during World War II. Visitors can view Anne's original
diary and climb behind the bookcase to the room where she and her family hid from the Nazis for two years.
1. What means of transport is not available to visitors in Amsterdam?
A. A carriage.
B. A bicycle.
C. A canal bus.
D. A water taxi.
2. When getting lost, a visitor can ask natives for directions in _______.
A. only Dutch
B. Dutch or English
C. only English
D. Spanish and English
3. What can you learn about by visiting the Anne Frank House?
A. The experience of a beautiful girl survivor.
B. The glorious past of Amsterdam.
C. The life of Jewish during World War Ⅱ.
D. The suffering of the Dutch in wars.
4. The passage is intended to _______.
A. call up people's memories of World War Ⅱ

C. instruct visitors what to do and see in Holland
D. offer readers some information about Amsterdam

In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most
people like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is
about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied
trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in
personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a
bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years,
the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers
has increased,it is still very small now. In countries such as France,Germany,or Japan, more people
use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly,Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains.
These highways connect all major cities in America. Secondly, many travelers like to be independent.
When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between
major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, trave
l from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over
long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to
fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing

Freezing weather can mean frostbite(冻疮)and hypothermia (低体温)unless a person is prepared.
Today we talk about how to stay warm,  dry and safe.
Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long. It mainly
happens on the hands,  feet,  nose and ears.
People with minor cases of frostbite that affect only the skin may not suffer and permanent damage.
But if deeper tissue is affected, a person is likely to feel pain every time the area gets cold.
Hypothermia happens when the body cannot produce as much heat as it releases. The condition
comes on slowly. Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shaking, very slow breathing and difficulty
thinking clearly. If not treated, hypothermia can be deadly.
To avoid coldrelated injuries, here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to stay warm, Think
of COLD-C.O.L.D.
The C stands for cover.Wear a hat and a scarf to keep heat from escaping through the head, neck
and ears. And wear mittens(连指手套)instead of gloves. In gloves, the fingers are separated, so the
hands may not stay as warm.
The O stands for overexertion. Avoid activities that will make you sweaty. Wet clothes and cold
weather are a bad mix.
The L stands for layers. Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better
than wearing a single heavy layer of clothing. Also, make sure outerwear is made of material that is
water resistant and tightly knit.
The D stands for dry.In other words, stay as dry as possible. Pay attention to the places where
snow can enter, like the tops of boots, the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens.
Hypothermia can be mild, moderate or severe. Mild hypothermia is something that most people
have experienced if they live in cold climates. You feel so cold that your body starts to shake-not very
much, but uncontrollably.
The treatment for mild hypothermia starts with getting out of the cold and, if necessary, changing into
dry clothes.Drinking warm, nonalcoholic liquids and eating something sugary can stop the shivering.
Taking a warm bath or sitting by a fire or doing some exercise can also help the body warm up.
These are all common sense treatments.
But the treatment needs change when people enter the moderate or severe stages of hypothermia.
In that situation,  their body temperature drops below thirtyfive degrees Celsius. They lose the ability to
think clearly. Their muscles become stiff. They might bump into things or fall over objects.
It is important to work fast to get people out of the cold.Hypothermia victims need medical help as
soon as possible. But it is equally important to move them slowly and gently.

How to stay warm, dry and safe

There are 3 basic types of rock climbing.Top roping is probably one of the most common types
and the climber basically climbs with a partner.Top roping is a style in which a rope, used for the
climber's safety, runs from a belayer(保护员)at the foot of a route through one or more carabiners(铁
锁)connected to an anchor system at the top of the route and back down to the climber, usually attaching
to the climber by means of a harness.Assuming that the route is bottomtotop, the toprope climber generally will not fall more than a short distance and can thus safely attempt even the most difficult routes.
The second type, which is very similar to top roping is called lead climbing. The buddy(同伴)system
works the same way,one man on the ground belaying and the other climbing, but this time instead of the
rope being at the top of the rock it has to be hooked into clasps(钩子)as the climber climbs up the rock.
In both of these types of rock climbing the climbers has the luxury to sit off the rock face and rest on the
rope. However, lead climbing requires the climber to hang from the rock face with one hand, grab the
rope ,and pull it up to lip it into the clasps, and this can be very hard depending on many different things.
The third type of rock climbing is called bouldering.Bouldering is a type of free climbing without any
ropes or harnesses. The climber tends to stay much closer to the ground. This is the most demanding of
all climbing. The climber must be able to complete the route without taking a rest on the rope.Often,
during a bouldering route the climber is required to do a maneuver called dyno(动态动作). Dynos are
basically launching yourself off the rock face, and then grabbing at a hold further away from you. This type
of maneuver is where mental training plays a major role in climbing.
Believe it or not, climbing is said to be about 75% legs and only 25% arms.To climb successfully one
must use wonderful technique. One of the major rules of rock climbing is to always have 3 points touching
the rock face.Whether it is both feet and one hand,or one foot and both hands,it is much easier to have
your weight distributed on 3 points than it is 2.Another important concept to grasp is that your arms in
most cases will not do the climbing;they only hold you into the rock face so that your legs are actually
pushing you upward. The closer you are to the rock face, the easier it is to climb.
