[1]You are about to become a college freshman. You enter a college expecting to leave with a degree.
The following are tips on how to get the most out of your college education.
Time Management
[2] "Man is first a social animal, then a rational one." So you may find it hard to say "No" each time your
roommate wants to see a movie when you need to read Paradise Lost(《失乐园》).
[3]Think about what you want from college and from friends. Study after breakfast, between classes,
whatever works best for you. Don't cut off all social contacts, which are as vital to surviving in college as
reading. Study Hegel(黑格尔)first, then catch a late movie.
Study Method
[4]Would you take a trip by _____ instead of reading a map? Of course not. Studying in college demands more independence than in high school, survey the material first to get a sense of it; ask some questions;
write down key ideas; tell yourself the essence of what you've read and review it.
Keeping up
[5]Professors may not notice whether you attend a large lecture, but you could notice later on. Some
professors use lectures to discuss material not found in the reading on which they will base an exam.
Others stress key points. Skip at your own risk. If you must miss a lecture, get the notes in time. If too
much time elapse (逝去), the notes will make no sense. Never fall more than a week behind in reading
the notes. If you don't do the reading, you won't understand the lecture.

Music lessons may improve memory and learning ability in your children by promoting different
patterns of brain development, a study shows.
After a year of musical training, children aged between 4 and 6 performed better at a standard
memory test than did children who were not taught music. The findings suggest that music could be
useful for building the learning capacity of your minds.
Earlier studies have shown that older children given music lessons become better at IQ tests than
those who are musically untrained, but this is the first to show such a benefit in children so young.
Professor Laurek Trainor, of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, also found clear differences
in the ways in which children's brains responded to sound after a year of musical training.' This is the
first study to show that brain responses in young, musically trained and untrained children change
differently over the course of a year," she said. "These changes are likely to be related to the cognitive
( 认知的 )benefit that is seen with musical training."
Professor Trainer's team looked at 12 children, 6 of whom had just started extra-curricular (课程
外) music lessons and 6 of whom were not being taught any music except that included as a standard
part of their school curriculum (课程标准) .
During the year all 12 children had their brains examined four times using magneto-encephalography
(MEG), and each child was played two types of sound -white noise and a violin tone. The MEG
measurements showed that all children responded more to violin sounds than to white noise, reflecting
a preferable for meaningful tones, and their response times fell over the course of the year as their brains
matured.
1. This passage is mainly about ____.
A. why music lessons are good for the memory
B. the benefit from extra-curricular training for younger children
C. a study on twelve young children's brains
D. new technology to examine children's brains
2. It can be concluded from the text that ____.
A. the study is the first one on the effect of musical training on children's brains
B. scientists got no valuable results from the earlier studies on the topic
C. children musically trained remember things better than those untrained
D. older children get more benefit from musical training than younger ones
3. What do we know about the twelve children tested in the study?
A. None of them had been musically trained before.
B. Only 6 of them had a knowledge of music before.
C. Not all of them had been taught some music in school.
D. All of them were required to learn some music in school.
4. We know from the MEG measurements that ____.
A. the older a child is, the more quickly he/she responds to sounds
B. human brains prefer musical sounds to white noise
C. children of different ages respond to sounds at the same speed
D. all the twelve children like to learn to play the violin very much

Have one of those days or weeks when everything seems to annoy
you? Even if you do nothing about it,your bad mood will probably go
away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget
it much faster, often within a day or two.
     ◆ Walk it off
Exercise is the most popular way to remove bad mood. A person
who's in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a
fast ten-minute walk, or taking some quick exercise can do wonders
towards changing that bad mood.
     ◆ Tune it out
Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tensions
go away quickly, because music starts associations with past positive
experiences we've had.
◆ Give yourself a pep talk
Stop and listen to what's on your mind. Bad moods are often
started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper,
including the pessimistic ( 悲观的)messages you've been giving yourself
and then give optimistic answers.
◆ Avoid things that won't improve your mood
TV may not help much. You need to increase your energy level
and stimulate your mind. And before you reach for that piece of
cake or coffee ,think about how       are linked. Sugar and caffeine
contribute to depressed moods. While carbohydrates, such as potatoes
and pasta( 意大利面食) produce a calming effect in people

Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way
of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed in doing jobs that
afford them little or no satisfaction.
Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can
earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others leave one for another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their
expectation.
Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. The
reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational (职业的) guidance in our educational institution. Nearly allfeel their way in the dark. Their chief concern when they lookfor a job is
to ask what salary is like. They never bother tothink whether they are suited for the job or, even more
important, whether the job suits them. Having a job is more thanmerely providing yourself and your
dependants (受赡养者) with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interest.
In choosing a profession you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more sad than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it will not only ruin your talents but also discourage your desire to succeed in life.
1. Few school leavers have plans for the long term when finding jobs because _____.
A. they are lowly paid
B. they are not well trained
C. it is difficult to get employed
D. they don't know what they are interested in
2. According to the passage, the difficulty in choosing a suitable job mainly lies in that _____.
A. much competition has to be faced
B. many employees have no working experience
C. the young people only care about how much they can earn
D. schools fail to offer students appropriate vocational guidance
3. In the writer's opinion, which of the following statements is most important?
A. Your job must suit your interest.
B. Your job must set a pattern of life.
C. Your job must offer you a high salary.
D. Your job must not ruin your talents.

Finally, there is the evolution of Yao's mind. He has become a wise man who has devoted time and
money into life after the NBA.
Yao said he did not only see his investment in the current CBA system in purely financial terms, but
also as a way to support the development of basketball in China and return the favour to Shanghai for
looking after him in his early days.
A few days before our most recent interview, Yao was asked to attend an award ceremony for top
athletes in China. He realised his superstar friends and fellow athletes were often forced to take lowpaying jobs because they had little formal education.
As boss of the Shanghai Sharks, Yao has invited both teachers and mentors to help his players better
manage their financial futures.
Another of Yao's problems has been balancing the knowledge he has gained in the NBA with the
traditions of home.
As head of the Sharks he has to consider what's best for his team, even if it means hurting some of his
closest friends. Like his first coach, Li Qiuping, who was in hospital when Yao told him he was going to
have to replace him with an American coach.
Navigating traditional Chinese society, he said, can be tricky at times. He sometimes wistfully thinks
back to his early days, when he just played basketball. Even so, he never shies away from the challenge.
When I think about these aspects of Yao's life, I admire him as an example of someone who is
downtoearth and has not let fame go to his head.
As Yao will enter a new phase in his life, his 30s, fatherhood, returning to the NBA, and the next step
in his career as manager, he shows the courage to make a difference in the world.
Yang Lan One On One is shown on Shanghai Dragon TV, Sat.23:10 PM.

Faced with a tough job market, fresh graduates are dreaming of running their own businesses
instead. But a recent survey has showed that such ambitions lack the required support and remain
just that-dreams.
The Shanghai Municipal Employment Promotion Centre poll of 1,276 graduates in several
universities and colleges in the city, released last Friday, showed 59.78 percent of respondents
considered the possibility of setting up a company or at least a small store. "But they just stop at
the 'thinking stage'," it stated.
Respondents put the top reasons for not going it alone down to a shortage of investment and a
lack of business opportunity. They also listed lack of business experience and social networks, the
need for advanced study and objections from family members as factors that stood in their way.
More than 90 percent of the interviewees said they would rather take up a job after graduating
and then consider starting their own business two or three years down the road.
Guo Bin, a senior student in Shanghai International Studies University majoring in English, decided
he wanted to be his own boss last year. But he is looking for a job first. "If I fail to find a satisfying job,
I would like to establish a company in exhibition services," Guo said.
The Shanghai native has some relatives working in a local printing plant. With their help, Guo hopes
to produce exhibition brochures at a relatively low price. He is also confident that his English language
skills can help him do well in the industry.
"Social networking is an important factor leading to business success," Guo said.
Guo said that the shortage of graduate jobs is the main reason driving more university students to
set up a business right after their graduation.
Jiang said the university sets up a business guide team made of government officials and prof
essionals. They regularly give training courses to students who show an interest in having their own
business. The parents of university graduates are more willing to help their children start up alone.
The survey showed "Once you win the support of your family, you have won half the battle," Guo
added.
