You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and
give without making time to fill your own needs, then it's likely you will bum out, or feel upset. When you
take and take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways
to fill the void in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your
values. I break values up into two groups which I call being and having values. Your being values are the
character traits (特点 ;特征)  of the ideal person you would like to be. I suggest to my clients that they
choose three being values that they are willing to make a commitment(信奉; 信仰) to live by. An
example of some being values are: kind ,loving, generous , inspirational, peaceful, wise  and even
powerful. By acting on these values you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by
being a positive role model. Mastering being these character traits becomes your life purpose.
Your having values are, the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be
companionship , achievement , support , being  valued  or financial  security. This is what you receive.
You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions
in your life.
When you make a commitment to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious
choices rather than reactionary ones. If your usual pattem is to talk about your problems, you could
choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, meditate (沉思 ) ,or set
a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a
responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be this is the
key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you not only feel good about yourself, you reinforce (加强)
your chosen beliefs. Over time acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way
other people think of you.
1. The main purpose of this passage is to          .
A. persuade the readers to make a commitment
B. explain to the readers what personal values are
C.inform the readers how to be truly happy
D. instruct the readers how to make wise choices
2. According to the text, living by your being values, you would       .
A. gain a lot of power
B. form positive personality
C. seek all human virtues
D. fill your own needs
3.The underlined word "void" in paragraph I means "          ."
A. a feeling of emptiness
B. an absence of one's mind
C. a break of continuity
D. a state of confusion
4. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Having values are better than being values;
B. A calm person does not choose to complain.
C.The way other people think of you decides who you are.
D. A responsible person does not care about financial security.

You've probably heard that you're not supposed to pour old medications down the toilet
or drain(排水沟). That's because drugs can get into the water supply and cause problems
for people as well as wildlife.
But you can't just throw medicines or unused prescriptions in the trash either. You don't
want medications-and your private health information-to fall into the wrong hands.
Destroying old medications and then putting them in the trash is the way to go. Here's how:
Dump the medicine out of its container into a plastic bag. You don't want to throw away
medications in their containers because there is a risk that people looking for drugs, as well
as kids or pets, might find them. You can mix different kinds of medicines in the same bag.
Just be sure to use a plastic bag that can be tightly sealed. And then seal up the bag and
throw it away in the regular trash.
Destroy the medications. Add a small amount of water to the bag to dissolve(溶解) the
medications. Then, add something that is not food, like dirt. That way, if the medication mix
falls into the hands of children, they won't be able to eat it.
After you've dealt with the medication following the instructions above, throw the medicine
container in the trash. But before you do that, get rid of the label and destroy it. This helps
you protect your medical information and keep it private. You don't want your name, address,
and other personal information showing up next to the name of the drug you are taking. If you
can't remove the label, take a marker and black out(用墨等涂掉) any personal information.
A few prescription medications need to be dealt with immediately after they are no longer
needed. These should still be washed away down the toilet. If your prescription is one of these,
the label on the container should say so.
1.Why can't we pour old medications down the toilet or drain? (No more than 15 words)
________________________________________________________________________
2.How can the unused medications be destroyed? (No more than 15 words)

3.Why must you remove the label and destroy it before throwing away the medicine containers? (No more than 11 words)

Free and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meals. It sounds like the
perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students.
Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation
costs when they leave home to study at university.
Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps,an online accommodation forum
(论坛) for parents and students,in advance of the introduction in September of ~3,000 higher education
top-up fees.
Their website says,"The principle behind Student Swaps is to enable students to literally swap(交换)
family homes. "The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with
suitable matches. So those from one town/city could swap with those from a different town/city.
The site describes itself as offering a" cost-free accommodation alternative...at a time of growing
student debt". There is no charge for the service at the moment, but Ms Barnham and Ms Flude intend to
introduce a ~10 annual fee if it becomes established.
However, the National Union of Students ( NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound
appealing to struggling freshers,it lacks any formal regulation.
Veronica King,NUS vice-president of welfare, said, " The fact that this scheme has even been
suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation. " Recent research has
shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years,in a bid to cut down on the cost of
a degree.
"This is worrying,as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is,rather
than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for
some-a key part of the student experience-living away from home. "
1. A" cash-strapped" student means one who _____.
A. lacks money
B. prefers to stay at home
C. is careful with money
D. wants to change cash
2. What is Kate Bamham and Amanda Flude's purpose of launching Student Swaps?
A. To provide cheaper accommodation for students.
B. To let students stay close to their universities.
C. To help students spend less on accommodation costs.
D. To let students exchange ideas freely online.
3. What can students do on Student Swaps?
A. They can find students to exchange homes with.
B. They can make friends with students from a different city.
C. They can borrow money to pay for their higher education.
D. They can voice their opinions against the rising cost of a degree.
4. Now many students would prefer a university
A. which can give them free accommodation
B. which is not far away from their homes
C. which offers the best courses
D. which can offer home-cooked meals
5. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. High Cost Troubles University Students in UK.
B. Students Swaps is Welcomed by Students in UK.
C. Two Mothers' Good Intention to Help Students in UK.
D. Website Helps Students Live at Someone Else's Home.

Silence is unnatural to man. He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between be does all he can
to make a noise in the world, and be fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt
to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and is number of pauses occur in the
conversation, he regards him-self as a failure,a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest- headed
chatterbox (喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety nine percent of human conversation means no more than the
buzzing of a fly
, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure
(蜡塑人像).
The aim of conversation is not. For the most part, to communicate ideas; it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the
continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子). But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet
person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear, and some of it is pleasant even to the mind. He would
be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors.
Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason
why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything
new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears,
though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food
in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening, during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time.
They just prove themselves to be successful conservationists.
1. According to the author, people make conversation to _____.
A. exchange ideas
B. prove their value
C. achieve success in life
D. overcome their fear of silence
2.  By "the buzzing of a fly " (Para.1),the author means"_____ ".
A. the noise of an insect
B. a low whispering sound
C. meaningless talks
D. the voice of a chatterbox
3.  According to the passage, people usually talk to their neighbors _____.
A. about whatever they have prepared
B. about whatever they want do
C. in the hope of learning something new
D. in the hope of getting on well
4.  What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A. To discuss why people like talking about weather.
B. To encourage people to join in conversations.
C. To persuade people to stop making noises.
D. To explain why people keep talking.
