When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely

     The future history books might also record that we were deprived (剥夺) of the use of our eyes. In our
hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird's-eye
view of the world. When you travel by car or train, an unclear picture of the countryside constantly smears
the windows. Car drivers, especially, are mixed with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. The
typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says "I've been there." You mention the remotest,
and someone is bound to say "I've been there"-meaning, "I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way
to somewhere else."
     When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend
most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is
meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend all experience. The traveler on
foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present.
     For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes.
He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey
he feels a delicious physical tiredness. He knows that sound, satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all
true travelers.

Dear Mr. Expert,
     I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always promised myself that I'd get out as soon as possible.

     Here's the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine-so
much so that they make mine theirs.

     Shopping in the United States changes a lot. About ninety years ago most people shopped in small stores
that were owned by one person or a family. Women went from the bakery to the butcher's to the grocer and
on to the fruit and vegetable seller in order to get their food for the week.

goods at a great discount and sell them much cheaper than smaller stores.
     Sometimes, when they are built near small towns, many of the small town stores have to close. They just
cannot compete with their giant neighbors.
     And now, online shopping is becoming more and more popular all over the States. People are too busy to
go to the physical stores, so they go shopping over the Internet. Online shopping has lots of advantages. For
instance, online stores are usually available 24 hours a day. Searching or browsing online shops can bde faster
than browsing the physical stores. While, online shopping also has its disadvantages. People are at higher risk
of being cheated on the part of the merchant than in a physical store. And privacy of personal information may

     A busy life can be personally satisfying, but it may make you feel too tired to achieve the inner peace that

     Life is full of opportunities to earn money, give services. Learn new skills and make new friends. Some of
us want them all and fill up our timetable with all kind of activities. Rushing from one activity to another leaves
you with no time to slow down. No matter how worthy you think your activities are, rethink them. Keep the
ones that are most important and leave out the ones that are adding to the pace of your life with little return.
     Life is forever changing, and you will never reach a point of simplicity and endless happiness. But each
moment you spend on the path to simplicity does have the possibility to bring happiness to your life.

Dear editor,
     I read with interest the article on American families. In general I agree with it, but there are some important
things it left out. It didn't tell the reader much about the life of a househusband. It's not an easy life. I know,
because I'm now a househusband myself. A househusband has to change many of his ideas and his ways.
     First of all, he has to change the way he thinks about time. Before I was a househusband, I worked full-time
for the New York Times. I was a reporter, and time was always important. Everyone was always in a hurry.
     However, it's different at home. The househusband cannot be in a hurry all the time. If you rush around,
you will make everyone unhappy because they don't understand. For them, time is not important. So you have
to learn to slow down. That is the first and most important rule for a househusband.
     What's more, there is something else the househusband must learn. You must learn to show how you feel
about things. Many men do not know how to talk about their anger, worries, or love. But children need to know
how much you love them. If you are angry, they need to know why. So does your wife. If you do not say
anything, your family may get the wrong idea. Then there may be serious problems.
     People talk a lot about househusbands these days. Usually they talk about men doing the housework, the
cooking, cleaning, and shopping. But in my opinion, these are the easiest things to learn. It is much harder for
me to change the way I think and the way I act with my family. I think other men will also find this harder,
but, like me, will find it necessary if they want to have a happy family!
