                                                          Weight-consciousness
For many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.
Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing their body will fix everything.
Perhaps their worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being
cherished. We fantasize (幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last ,we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be
different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting
happiness, self-worth, and of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty
standards vary with cultures. InSamoa, a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs morethan
200 pounds. More importantly, if it's happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on
the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us strive (努力 ,奋斗 ) hard to change our body,
but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with others and
cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.

1. The passage tries to make the readers realize the importance of      _________.
A. the body size
B. cultural differences
C. the attitude toward life
D. different beauty standards
2. The underlined word " everything" in the second paragraph    means"_______".
A. all the problems
B. all the efforts
C. the whole world
D. the total truth
3. What can be inferred about the author?
A. The author is a Samoan.
B. The author succeeded in losing weight.
C. The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents.
D. The author once was troubled by her/his weight.
4. According to the author, the common view of those who lost some    weight first and gained it back later is that______.
A. they feel angry about the regained weight
B. they don't care about the regained weight
C. they feel optimistic about future plans on weight control
D. they think they should give up their future plans on weight control

I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people
make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on
successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died " full of years", as the Bible
would say. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁) calls on the
two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故的)woman said to me, " If only I had sent my
mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It's my fault
that she died." At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, " If only I hadn't
insisted on my mother's going to Florida, she would be alive today.. that long airplane ride, the sudden
change of climate, was more than she could take. It's my fault that she's dead."
You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action
they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course-keeping Mother at home, putting off
the operation-would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There are seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing
need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for
everything that happens that leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist
and where they exist only in our minds.
The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens , especially the bad things
that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believe that
every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.
A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen
in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone
comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him , and when he is wet, people change him.
Very often, we do not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.
1. What is said about the two diseased elderly women?
A. They lived out a natural life
B. They died of exhaustion after the long plane ride
C. They weren't used to the change in weather.
D. They died due to lack of care by family members
2. The author had to conduct the two women's funerals probably because ______.
A. he wanted to comfort the two families
B. he was an official from the community
C. he had great pity for the deceased
D. he was minister of the local church
3. People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because _____.
A. they couldn't find a better way to express their sorrow
B. they believe that they were responsible
C. they had neglected the natural course of events
D. they didn't know things often turn in the opposite direction
4. According to the passage, the underlined part in paragraph 4 probably means that_____.
A. everything in the world is predetermined
B. the world can be interpreted in different ways
C. there is an explanation for everything in the world
D. we have to be sensible in order to understand the world
5. What's the idea of the passage?
A. Life and death is an unsolved mystery.
B. Every story should have a happy ending.
C. Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault.
D. In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away

Do you know what Fear and Faith have in common? Fear believes in a negative future. Faith
believes in a positive future. Both believe in something that has not yet happened. So I ask you, if
neither the positive nor negative future has happened yet then why not choose to believe in the positive
future?
I believe during these challenging times we have a choice between two roads: the positive road
and the negative road. And our bus can't be on two roads at the same time. So we have to make a
choice and this choice determines our belief about the future and the attitude and actions we bring
to the present.
I'm not saying we shouldn't have any fear. There are times when fear is a gift. A healthy dose(剂量)
of fear causes us to examine our situation and plan for the future. It moves us to smell the cheese and
expect change. When used wisely it allows us to manage risk and make better decisions. Some fear
is good.
However, what I have observed lately is a supersized, huge dose of fear that is spreading the
hearts and minds of far too many people. This oversized fear is causing leaders and their organizations
to either act unreasonably or to not act at all. They are either hurrying in a million different directions
because of fear. In both cases, fear is leading them to take the negative road to failure.
The answer is the positive road paved (铺满) with faith and a belief that your best days are not
behind you but ahead of you. With this belief you make the right choices and actions today that will
create your positive future tomorrow. You stay calm, focused and committed to your purpose. You
look for ways to save money and cut costs without making unreasonable fear-based decisions that
sacrifice your future success. You identify opportunities in the midst of the challenges and you focus
on solutions instead of problems.
Your faith and belief in a positive future leads to powerful actions today. The future has not
happened yet and you have a say in what it looks like by the way you think and act. Fear or Faith.
     The choice is yours.
1. According to the passage, we can know that ________.
A. Fear and Faith have nothing in common
B. both Fear and Faith trust something in the future
C. neither negative nor positive future will happen
D. people usually choose to believe in the positive future
2. What does the writer mean by saying "our bus can't be on two roads"?
A. We usually choose the negative road
B. We should choose the positive road
C. We must choose either a positive or negative road
D. Our belief about the future depends on our choice
3. Which of the following about "Fear" is true?
A. We should have fear because it is a gift.
B. Reasonable fear helps to plan for future.
C. Fear can bring cheese and risk to people.
D. Leaders usually have oversized fear.
4. If we have faith in future, we will ________.
A. have the best days ahead of us
B. be committed to saving money
C. stay away from any challenges
D. take powerful actions today
5. What does the writer intend to tell us in the passage?
A. Fear is closely related to faith.
B. Life is full of fear and faith.
C. We should have faith in a positive future.
D. Wrong decisions sacrifice our future success.

I know we don't have many serious talks, but now that I am on the edge of being an adult, I feel that
you need to know and understand me. During the past nine years that we have been in America, I have
grown greatly, changed from that wide-eyed and scared little girl to a proud and brave young woman.
The change wasn't always smooth, and I wasn't always patient, but you were both always understanding.
And through your understanding I have learned.
I have learned from you. Dad, you wake up every morning to go to the steel plant, where people don't
speak your language and you don't speak theirs. I know that if you were in Vietnam, you would be
comfortably surrounded by friends. But you are here in America, doing what you don't like, and through
that, you are teaching your children the power of persistence.
I have learned from you, Mom, you cook nice Vietnamese sour soup and fish, wait up at nights for
your daughters. When I see you pacing back and forth because your daughters aren't home yet, I cry
because I see so much pain in your eyes, and through your pain I learn the meaning of home a sanctuary
that I will always be able to turn to.
Through all your sacrifices I learn the essence of being human. I learn to love. I find that this love leads
me to you, to the home, to the fact that I am Vietnamese-American. The dreams that you have taught me
slowly begin to take shape as I walk down the college path, step into the adult world and adventure out
of your world. Wherever I go, I carry my past with me, knowing that you will always be there behind me
and I will always come back, because you are where my home is.

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and
wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises
from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon
their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of
conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy
all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things.
Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society,
offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded
in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being
disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The
habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests
and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on
deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats
them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper
and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune,
nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they
bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize
their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without
worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any
contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when
one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

A. we should pity all such unhappy people
