The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services,” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people ,working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.

At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however ,recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means, She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.

“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school . We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school , I too wanted to try her kind of work . So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks”

“I was asked to work in a home for sick people . I helped wash clothes and sheets and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up, I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much . It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

       A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa

       B. She had already had some experience

C. She was asked by Mother Teresa to do so

D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example

4. What is Tracy’s “new idea”(Paragraph2) of being a volunteer?

       A. Going abroad to help the sick,

       B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home

       C. Doing simple things to help the poor

       D. Improving oneself through helping others.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Eight – year – old Jesse Abrogate was playing in the sea late one evening in July 2001 when a 7 – foot bull shark attacked him and tore off his arm. Jesse’s uncle jumped into the sea and dragged the boy to shore. The boy was not breathing. His aunt gave him mouth – to – mouth resuscitation (人工呼吸) while his uncle rang the emergency services. Pretty soon, a helicopter arrived and flew the boy to hospital. It was a much quicker journey than the journey by road.

Jesse’s uncle, Vance Folsenzier, ran back into to the sea and found the shark that had attacked his nephew. He picked the shark up and threw it onto the beach. A coastguard shot the fish four times and although this did not kill it, the shark’s jaws relaxed so that they could open them, and reach down into its stomach, and pull out the boy’s arm.

At the Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Dr Ian Rogers spent eleven hours reattaching Jesse’s arm. “It was a complicated operation,” he said, “but we were lucky. If the arm hadn’t been recovered in time, we wouldn’t have been able to do the operation at all. What I mean is that if they hadn’t found the shark, well then we wouldn’t have had a chance.’

According to local park ranger Jack Tomosvic, shark attacks are not that common. “Jesse was just unlucky,” he says, “evening is the shark’s feeding time. And Jesse was in area without lifeguards. This would never have happened if he had been in area where swimming is allowed.’

When reporters asked Jesse’s uncle how he had had the courage to fight a shark, he replied, “I was mad and you do some strange things when you’re mad.”

1.What was the boy doing when the accident happened?

A.Feeding a hungry shark.      B.Jumping into the rough sea.

C.Dragging a boy to the shore.   D.Swimming in a dangerous area.

2.In which way did the boy’s uncle help with the operation?

A.By finding his lost arm.      B.By shooting the fish.

C.By flying him to hospital.           D.By blowing into his mouth.

3.How was his uncle in time of danger?

       A.Careful.    B.Brave.      C.Optimistic.       D.Patient.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. but most

mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?" "When I got

that great job, did Jim, as a friend, really feel good about it? Or did he envy my luck?" "And was Paul friendly just because I had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad.

But when we look back, it is too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends, or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meanings. And if we do not really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You're a lucky dog!"(你真幸运!) Is he really on your side? If he says, "You're a lucky guy!", that is being friendly. But "a lucky dog?" There is a bit of envy in those words. What he may be saying is that he does not think you deserve your luck.

"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for" is another phrase that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem. But this phrase contains the thought that your problem is not at all important.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Is what he says shown by the tone of voice? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save your another mistake.

第五部分:任务型阅读(每小题1分, 满分10分)

Nowadays, more and more people are using email, but sometimes we use it too much or use it inappropriately. To get the most out of email we need to use it carefully and sensibly. These are some simple tips to help you make a better use of email.

It is good to have separate email accounts for separate purposes. For example, you may have one for business and one for social activities. This means you can check the personal email in the evening without having to think about business. If you see an important message from your boss, it could ruin your weekend or evening. After all, most people want to relax themselves and get away from work at the end of the day. Don't allow email to make you a slave to work. Some people feel it is inconvenient to check 2 different email accounts. But the relative inconvenience is easily outweighed by the benefits.

Many people ignore the title of an email. If the subject changes don’t keep using an old “re: irrelevant title.” A good title increases the chance that people will actually read your email rather than just leaving it for later. A bad title may even get deleted as spam.(垃圾邮件)

Emails can be brief and to the point. If the message has to be long, make sure it is broken up into different sections, which are easy to read. But, generally you should aim to keep it less than 5 sentences. This is good for both the writer and the reader.

If somebody sends some important documents, files or message, make sure you, at least, acknowledge their receipt(接收). Otherwise they may be uncertain that you’ve got them. It doesn't have to be long; it can be quite short.

If you find yourself sending similar answers to many people, write a draft message and save it in your drafts folder (or write it in Word). You can use this standard response for emailing many people. Don’t forget to personalize it by adding their names.

Having a signature looks professional and saves typing the same information. Remember people may wish to contact you through other ways. So make sure you have a phone number and address in your email. If relevant, add any qualifications and websites that you have. This gives people a chance to find out more about you.
