三. 阅读理解(每小题2分,满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Ten years ago I used to be very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.

There’s a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!

Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

56. Compared with ten years ago, what is worse for the author now?

A. His job.    B. His pay.   C. His means of transport.    D. His health.

57. According to the passage, when the author got the better job, which of the following is NOT true?

A. He got higher pay.            B. His working hours weren’t long.

C. He found it very stressful.      D. He had little free time at weekends.

58. After the author had a heart attack, the doctor advised him _____.

A. not to work any longer            B. to take a long vacation abroad

C. to stop smoking and take exercise   D. not to eat out any more

59. What can we learn about the author?

A. The author is not sure what he should do now.

B. The author has taken the doctor’s advice.

C. The author has got another new job

D. The author feels much better now.

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage.

When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness".

If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure.

1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________.

  A. the way you deal with major events may cause stress

  B. what should be done to avoid stress

  C. what kind of event would cause stress

  D. how to deal with sudden changes in life

2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ___________________.

A. popular avoidance of stressful jobs

B. great fear over the mental disorder

C. a careful research into stress-related illnesses

D. widespread worry about its harmful effects

3. The score of the Holmes-Rahe test shows ________________.

A. how you can deal with life-changing events

B. how helpful events can change your life

C. how stressful a major event can be

D. how much pressure you are under

4. Why is “such simplistic advice” (Line 1, Paragraph 3) impossible to follow?

A. No one can stay on the same job for long.

B. No prescription is effective in reducing stress.

C. People have to get married someday.

D. You could be missing chances as well.

5. According to the passage people who have experienced ups and downs may become _______.

A. nervous when faced with difficulties          B. physically and mentally tired

C. more able to deal with difficulties            D. cold toward what happens to them

Below is a housing guide for students going to London.

University accommodation office

Many university accommodation offices have their own list of registered landlords (房东). Others also provide information on accommodation agencies and other housing organizations. The advantage of using your university accommodation office is that you can get some support if you have 'a problem. The disadvantage is that they are unlikely to have enough registered landlords to house all their students.

Property papers: Loot and Renting

Loot is an important source (来源) of information about private housing for co-renters. The offers are from private landlords, agencies and individuals looking for other co-renters. Noticeboards

Around the universities you will find a number of noticeboards where offers of accommodation will be posted. These will either be from landlords or from students. Some universities will also have online noticeboards where students can advertise to other students. Advertisements from students can be an excellent way to find accommodation. However, advertisements from landlords can be problematic.

Word of mouth

Some of the best housing in London is never advertised but is passed on from one group of students to another by word of mouth. It might be that you can find out about good offers from final year students. However, don't suppose that just because you have found out about housing from a friend it is necessarily, going to be better than that found through any other source.
