Jordan Makes Basketball Hall of Fame

Last Monday, the former Chicago Bulls great was elected to the 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame class, adding another honor to his long list of accomplishments. With incredible acrobatic (特技的) moves and slam dunks(灌篮), Jordan was a 14-time NBA All-Star, a five-time NBA finals Most Valuable Player and the key figure on the 1992 US Olympic gold medal “Dream” Team.

Jordan retired twice during his 15-year career, and finished with 32,392 points, the third-highest total in NBA history behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. His career average of 30.12 points per game is the best in the league’s history.

Although his career boasts(拥有)many glories, Jordan said entering the hall was what he never imagined. “I don’t like being up here for the Hall of Fame, because at that time, your basketball career is completely over.” Jordan said during a news conference. “I was hoping this day was coming in 20 more years, or that I’d actually go in when I’m dead and done.”

According to the Chicago Tribune, as Jordan accepted a Hall of Fame Jersey(运动衣), he turned to his former competitors David Robinson and John Stockton, who were also among the class of 2009, and threatened another comeback.

“Every time I see these guys, I want to put my shorts on,” said Jordan, 46, whose age has decreased everything but his desire.

His father once said that passion was what made his son special. From the moment he started playing games, Michael had to win. Once, Jordan traveled everywhere and anywhere to feed that competitive urge.

“He doesn’t have a gambling problem.” His father said, “What he does have is a competition problem. He was born with that. The person he tries to outdo(超过)most of the time is himself.”

回答问题(共3小题;每小题2分,满分6分)

阅读下面短文,根据第58至第60小题的具体要求,尽可能简要回答问题,并将答案转写到答题卡上。

Playing is serous business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It’s also good for them.

Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly colored toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight.

When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.

Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be.

Crayons, paints and Play-Doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.

Playing doesn’t become any less important once children start school. Many valuable lessons about life are learned on the school playground. Kids learn how to share, take turns and play by the rules.

C

In the early days of human history, people lived by hunting wild animals, or gathering wild grains and plants for food. Then, some people learned to grow crops and raise animals for food. They were the first farmers.

Since the sixteenth century, the word farm has meant agricultural land. But a much older meaning of the word farm is linked to economics. The word farm comes from the Latin word, firma, which means an unchanging payment.

Experts say the earliest meaning of the English word farm was a yearly payment made as a tax or rent.

Farmers in early England did not own their land. They paid every year to use agricultural lands.

Beans are a popular farm crop. But beans are used to describe something of very little value in the expression, not worth a hill of beans. The expression is often used today. You could say, for example, that a bad idea is not worth a hill of beans.

Language expert Charles Earle Funk said the expression was first used almost seven hundred years ago. He said Robert of Gloucester described a message from the King of Germany to King John of England as altogether not worth a bean.

49. In the early days of human history, how did people live?

A. By raising animals.                                      B. By hunting wild animals.

C. By growing crops.                                    D. By selling plants.

50. What is the much older meaning of “farm” linked to?

A. Agriculture.              B. Industry.           C. Economics.   D. Changing payment.

51. What does the expression “not worth a hill of beans” mean?

A. Very important.        B. Very valuable.           C. Not valuable.     D. Not expensive.

52. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Since the sixteenth century, the word farm has meant agricultural land.

B. The word farm comes from the Latin word.

C. Farmers in early England owned their land.

D. The expression “not worth a hill of beans” was first used almost seven hundred years ago.

B

When people lose legs after accidents or illnesses, emergency care and artificial limbs(假肢)often allow them to walk again. Newts (蝾螈) in the same situation, on the other hand, can grow limbs back on their own! Scientists have known for a long time that certain animals can re-grow limbs, but they haven’t quite figured out how these creatures do it.

Researchers have now come up with some new ideas. Their work may give people the ability to re-grow lost limbs. The researchers started with two simple experiments:when you cut a newt’s leg at the ankle, only the foot grows back;when you cut off a leg at the very end, the whole leg grows back. In both cases, the re-growth begins with stem cells. Stem cells can develop into nearly any type of cell in the body.

How do a newt’s stem cells know when to grow only a foot and when to re-grow a whole leg?

This question relates to another mystery. In newt’s, a cut-off leg will grow back only if the nerve bundle(神经束)in it also grows back , but if something prevents the nerve bundle from growing, the stem cells at the wound won’t re-grow a new leg.

In its study, a British team focused on a protein called n-AG. When the team prevented nerves in a limb from growing, but added the n-AG protein to stem cells in the limb, the limb still re-grew. That protein seems to guide limb re-growth. People have proteins that are similar to n-AG. Further research into these materials may someday help human limbs recover by themselves.

40. In the experiments, the researchers cut off a newt’s foot or leg to find out _____.

 A. what stem cells were                     B. whether they would grow back

 C. how long it would take to re-grow    D. how they would re-grow

41. A newt will re-grow its leg if _____.

 A. its ankle was cut off but the nerve bundle was good

 B. its leg was cut off and the nerve bundle stopped growing

C. its leg was cut off and the nerve bundle could grow back

D. its ankle and the nerve bundle were cut off

42. What do the underlined words “these materials” refer to?

 A. Nerve bundles and proteins.         B. Proteins similar to n-AG.

 C. Stem cells and proteins.               D. Stem cells and nerve bundles.

43. The first sentence of the passage _____.

 A. acts as a lead–in                       B. shows where researchers got their new ideas

C. states the author’s opinion           D. describes the result of researchers’ studies

D

You can love them or hate them, but no matter which tourist destination you visit, chances are you’ll see someone with their head buried in a Lonely Planet guidebook.

Lonely Planet is one of the world’s largest travel guide brands, publishing more than 500 different guides in eight languages. The popular brand also produces television shows, websites and podcasts(播客)all devoted to travel.

Some people praise Lonely Planet books because they make traveling easy and affordable. They also save time and make sure you don’t miss the best things.

They also provide the reviews of hostels(旅店), hotels, restaurants and ticket information about your destination.

This can be great if you’re a nervous traveler, or if you haven’t traveled by yourself before. If you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language, sometimes there’s nothing better than getting into a taxi and opening up a guidebook. You simply point to a map that directs the taxi driver to a hostel that’s cheap and clean, with friendly staff and cold beer.

But others criticize Lonely Planet and other travel guide publishers like them. They say guidebooks take the fun and spontaneity(自发性)out of traveling, and that part of the enjoyment of travel comes from the fact that anything can happen. They also regret that if you follow a guidebook, you’ll end up doing the same thing and having the same experience as everyone else. You might end up seeing the same group of people over and over, because everyone is reading the same book and following the same route.

Another criticism of travel guides is that they have a large impact on local communities. For example, some locals devote their lives to behaving in ways that attract tourists. They pretend to live a traditional lifestyle, wear traditional clothes and live in traditional houses in order to attract the tourist dollar.

67. The Lonely Planet guidebook can bring you the following advantages EXCEPT that __________.

A. you can speak a foreign language when opening a guidebook

B. you can easily find a nice place to stay in a strange city

C. it provides lots of useful information about your destination

D. it can help you save time and money when traveling

68. People criticize the guidebook because __________.

   A. it is not as useful as most travelers expect

B. tourist destinations will be crowded if everyone follows the same route

C. travelers may not get the chance to have unexpected adventures

D. local people keep modern lifestyles under its influence

69. What do we know about the Lonely Planet guidebook from the text?

   A. It’s a world-famous brand only producing guidebooks for travelers.

B. It’s very useful to a person who’s nervous about touring an unfamiliar place.

C. It’s very useful to a tourist who likes to repeat others’ experiences.

D. It is loved by all travelers because of the convenience it brings to travelers.

70. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (①—⑦ stand for Paragraph 1

—Paragraph 7 )

A. ①             B.  ①                C. ①                D. ①

②                 ②③  ④                ②                ②   ③

③④   ⑤⑥⑦         ⑤        ⑥⑦        ③④⑤  ⑥⑦       ④⑤      ⑥⑦
