Dear Editor,

I’m now busy in preparing for the Postgraduate (研究生) Entrance Exam. A few days ago, I happened to see some new guidebooks for those who want to take next year’s exam. With too many hopes and without taking it into too much consideration, I bought several that were written by some known for helping candidates (应试者) for master’s degrees.

What made me really angry was the starting discovery that the contents of those books were almost exactly the same as some I had bought before. There were only superficial (外表的) changes in their covers, with more attractive new titles and better designs. The contents were the same.

People say that the publishing industry is in a state of chaos (混乱) these days but I used to be doubtful abut that. I was of the opinion that only people of noble character, prestige (威望), and exceptional talent would produce books for higher education. But these editors are caring little about their readers.

I hope that authors and publishing houses will be more responsible for their readers. Don’t destroy the image that you have with your readers.

The writer bought some guidebooks in order to ___________________________.

   A. write an essay on guidebooks          B. prepare for the entrance exam

   C. give his students a lecture             D. send them to his good friends

The writer was angry because _________________________________________.

   A. there were a lot of printing mistakes in the books that he had bought

   B. the books were so expensive that he couldn’t afford any of them

   C. he found the books he had bought were thin but of poor quality

   D. the books had the same contents as what he had bought before

In the writer’s opinion, publishers should be _____________________________.

   A. responsible      B. kind-hearted       C. hard-working      D. creative

Robby was 11 when his mother dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer students to begin at an earlier age. Robby said that it had always been his mother’s dream to hear him play the piano, so l took him on as a student.

Robby tried and tried while l listened and encouraged him and gave him more instructions. But he just did not have any inborn(天生的)ability.

I only saw his mother from a distance. She always waved and smiled but never came in. Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but l guessed he had decided to try something else.

I was also glad that he stopped coming for the sake of my career. However, several weeks before the recital(演奏会) of my students, Robby came, telling me that he never stopped practicing and begged me to allow him to take part in it. I agreed, but l made him perform last in the program, so l could save his poor performance through my “curtain closer”.

I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen one piece of Mozart’s. Never had l heard a piece of Mozart’s played so well by someone at his age. When he finished, everyone was cheering.

I ran up and put my arms around Robby in joy. “I’ve never heard you play like that, Robby! How could you do it?”

“Well, Miss Hondorf. Do you remember l told you my mom was sick? Actually she died this morning. She was born deaf, so tonight was the first time she could hear me play. I wanted to make it special. I knew I could.”

That night, Robby was the teacher and I was the student. He taught me so many important things about life.

Why might Robby have stopped coming to piano lessons suddenly?

A. He thought that his teacher disliked him.

B. His mother might have been seriously ill.

C. His mother died and he didn’t need to play any longer.

D. He lost heart and believed that he would never make it.

We can learn from the text that            .

A. the writer thought students shouldn’t begin playing the piano too early

B. no one else could play the piece of Mozart’s as well as Robby

C. the writer thought that Robby had given up his piano lessons

D. only by practicing at home did Robby learn to play well

From the underlined sentence, we can infer that            .

A. the writer couldn’t teach so many students at a time

B. the writer looked down upon Robby and disliked him

C. with Robby in the recital, the other children couldn’t play well

D. the writer thought Robby was a bad advertisement for her teaching

The author made Robby perform last because           .

A. she wanted to do something to save a poor performance

B. the one who performed last always performed very well

C. Robby thought his mother would come at last

D. Robby asked the writer to do so

Think about what you had for lunch: Was it a hamburger? A chicken sandwich? Barbecue? What about vegetables? Would it surprise you to learn that what you eat can affect the whole planet?

It can—in a big way. New studies show how food and its production affect the globe and its warming climate. You’ve probably heard of global warming : The temperature is on the rise because humankind has been releasing (排放) amounts of gases into the atmosphere. One of these greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide(二氧化碳).

What does this have to do with food ? A big part of the carbon dioxide that we put in the atmosphere every year comes from the process of making and eating food. The production of meat contributes a lot of that carbon diode. And much of meat’s contribution comes from beef , which is responsible for releasing even more warming gases into the atmosphere.

The process of making a hamburger ,for example, requires a lot of energy. A cow has to be fed and raised on farmland, and cow waste is a major source of methane (沼气) — an especially powerful greenhouse gas. The cow has to be killed. The meat has to be processed (加工) and shipped to a shop, which takes fuel . Most of the cow won’t even be used for meat that people eat. By the time a hamburger finally lands on a dinner plate, it has made a heavy effect on the environment.

We can reduce the production of global-warming gases by eating less beef .Other kinds of meat like pork and chicken do less harm to the environment—at least in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases released.

All kinds of meat are harder on the planet than vegetables. To grow and eat a pound of potatoes, for example, sends less than one-quarter pound of carbon dioxide into the air. So changing our diet to less meat and more vegetables, as it turns out, may do the world some good.

Manage your time well for each module(单元), but also make sure you get a good balance(平衡) between work and social life. That is vital for life in general.

Set aside time specifically for each subject. Try to study one subject a day. You need to balance time. If you are bad at balancing things, make a personal timetable. Even if you do not stick to it, you will have an idea what you should be doing each day. This is better than trying to do everything each day and, at the end of the week, not achieve anything. Also, try to keep your weekends free of studying. Only study at the weekend if you really have to.

I had to learn to balance work, study and family when I was at college. I was a retail assistant working part-time and had at least four modules to complete at the same time at college. I also had to help around the house doing household cleaning and shopping at times. I managed to finish my college work on time, which was very difficult and hard, and still hold down a job.

Why was it possible? Because I only thought about my part-time work when I was at work on the weekends and my college work had to be done from Mondays to Fridays before the weekends. This was hard—but you need to set a timetable for yourself. It was an achievement when I finally realized that things have to be done in order, and need to be organized as well.

Balancing study and other aspects(方面) of your life can be a problem if you have a job or a family, but planning in advance is helpful. Use the time you have well. Do not leave anything until the last minute, as this will only cause problems.

The underlined word “vital”(in Paragraph 1) means_____________.

  A. common               B. necessary                  C. easy                  D. difficult

According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the advice the writer gives?

A. Try to study many subjects in a day.               B. Try not to study on the weekends.

C. Plan in advance.                                           D. Try to set a timetable.

It could be inferred from the passage that__________.

A. the writer has a part-time job as an assistant when he was at college

B. you need to set a timetable for yourself

C. you should make a personal timetable if you are bad at balancing your time

D .the writer can arrange(安排) his time well when he was at college

What is the passage mainly about?

A.I had a good time during my college.

B. How to study well at college.

C. Balance time between study and other aspects of your life.

D. How to plan your things in advance.
