Friendship can deeply affect the physical and mental health of both men and women. Studies show that people who have no friends or who are lonely, are more likely to die earlier, get sick more often and suffer greater physical wear and tear(折磨)than those who have a support system of friends.

Sometimes, family members may be more likely to give you advice or tell you what you don’t want to hear. It may not be as good as a friend who will listen to you and guide you, but support your decisions anyway. The most important elements about friendship are those who suffer support and do not judge your decisions based on society.

One reason for the link between social support and good health practice seems to be that people who feel cared for by others are less stress-out and are protected against the symptoms(症状)of depression and loneliness.

Generally, women benefit most because of how they deal with stress. Women are more social in how they deal with stress than men, while men are more likely to have a “fight or flight” reaction. Women also tend to have larger, denser social network, in which more people know each other and help each other, while men typically have smaller groups of friends and will rely on their wives or other important people for more support. While all these affect people psychologically(心理上), friendship brings comfort that reduces the ill effects of stress, and the sex difference also contributes to the difference in the length of one’s life time.

In the author’s opinion, a real friend should _________.

A.tell you what to do even if you refuse to hear it.

B.try to persuade you to change your mind quickly.

C.judge your decision according to his/her experience.

D.give you advice but respect your own decision.

Women benefit more from friendship than men because _________.

A.women are always cared for by more people than men.

B.women are usually less stress-out when staying with others.

C.women are more likely to solve problems with friends’ help

D.women can always keep more long-life friendship than men

According to the passage we can infer that _______.

A.it’s good for women to tell men what they should do or not

B.friends are always more important than family members

C.men don’t want to share their problems with many people

D.the trend that women can live longer makes them more relaxed

This passage mainly talks about _________.

      A.why people should develop friendship

      B.when friendship affects people’s health

      C.people’s different attitudes towards friendship

D.the friendship which can make people live longer

Every day we experience one of the wonders of the world around us without even realizing it. It is not the amazing complexity of television, nor the impressive technology of transport. The universal wonder we share and experience is our ability to make noises with our mouths, and so transmit ideas and thoughts to each other’s minds. This ability comes so naturally that we tend to forget what a miracle (奇迹) it is.

Obviously, the ability to talk is something that marks humans off from animals. Of course, some animals have powers just as amazing. Birds can fly thousands of miles by observing positions of the stars in the sky in relation to the time of day and year. In Nature’s talent show, humans are a species of animal that have developed their own special act. If we reduce it to basic terms, it’s an ability for communicating information to others, by varying sounds we make as we breathe out.

Not that we don’t have other powers of communication. Our facial expressions convey our emotions, such as anger, or joy, or disappointment. The way we hold our heads can indicate to others whether we are happy or sad. This is so-called “body language”. Bristling (直立的) fur is an unmistakable warning of attack among many animals. Similarly, the bowed head or drooping tail shows a readiness to take second place in any animal gathering.

Such a means of communication is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability to speak just another sort of instinct? If so, how did human beings acquire this amazing skill? Biologists can readily indicate that particular area of our brain where speech mechanisms function, but this doesn’t tell us how that part of our bodies originated in our biological history.

According to the passage, the wonder we take for granted is          .

       A. our ability to use language                                   B. the miracle of technology

       C. our ability to make noises with mouth           D. the amazing power of nature

What feature of “body language” mentioned in the passage is common to both humans and animals?

       A. Lifting heads when sad.                                B. Keeping long faces when angry.

       C. Bowing heads when willing to obey.                     D. Bristling hair when ready to attack.

What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

       A. Body language is unique to humans.

       B. Animals express emotions just as humans do.

       C. Humans are no different from animals to some degree.

D. Humans have other powers of communication.

This passage is mainly about          .

       A. the development of body language

       B. the special role humans play in nature

       C. the difference between humans and animals in language use

D. the power to convey information to others

This brief book is aimed at high school students, but speaks to anyone learning at any stage of life.

Its formal, serious style closely matches its content, a school-masterly book on schooling. The author, W.H.Armstrong, starts with the basics: reading and writing. In his opinion, reading doesn’t just mean recognizing each word on the page; it means taking in the information, digesting it and incorporating it into oneself just as digests a sandwich and makes it a part of himself. The goal is to bring the information back to life, not just to treat it as dead facts on paper from dead trees.Reading and writing cannot be completely separated from each other; in fact, the aim of reading is to express the information you have got from the text.I’ve seen it again and again: someone who can’t express an idea after reading a text is just as ineffective as someone who hasn’t read it at all.

Only a third of the book remains after that discussion, which Armstrong devotes to specific tips for studying languages, math, science and history. He generally handles these topics thoroughly(透彻地) and equally, except for some weakness in the science and math sections and a bit too much passion(激情) regarding history.Well, he was a history teacher — if conveyed only a tenth of his passion to his students, that was a hundred times more than my history teachers ever got across. To my disappointment, in this part of the book he ignores the arts.As a matter of fact, they demand all the concentration and study that math and science do, though the study differs slightly in kind.Although it’s commonly believed that the arts can only be naturally acquired, actually, learning the arts is no more natural than learning French or mathematics.

My other comment is that the text aged. The first edition apparently dates to the 1960s — none of the references(参考文献)seem newer than the late 1950s.As a result, the discussion misses the entire computer age.

These are small points, though, and don’t affect the main discussion.I recommend it to any student and any teacher, including the self-taught student.

According to Armstrong, the goal of reading is to________.

A.gain knowledge and expand one’s view

B.understand the meaning between the lines

C.express ideas based on what one has read

D.get information and keep it alive in memory

The author of the passage insists that learning the arts_________.

A.requires great efforts           B.demands real passion

C.is less natural than learning maths       D.is as natural as learning a language

What is a shortcoming of Armstrong’s work according to the author?

A.Some ideas are slightly contradictory.

B.There is too much discussion on studying science.

C.The style is too serious.

D.It lacks new information.

This passage can be classified as________.

A.an advertisement            B.a book review

C.a feature story                   D.a news report

Part Four: Writing

Section A (10 points)

Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage.

The art of growing dwarf (short) trees, or “bonsai” as their Japanese planters call them, is increasing in popularity in the United States. Growing bonsai can make a fascinating hobby for anyone who enjoys plants and creating beautiful effects with them. However, how can we meet the goal of making such a kind of art? This maybe is the problem for many of us.

There are, in fact, four important guidelines to follow in growing bonsai. First, one must be careful in choosing the type of tree. Not all species of trees can be made into bonsai, since the growing conditions are unusual.

Second, one must be careful in choosing the size of the container the bonsai will be in. This is necessary because the major growth of bonsai is kept confined to the tree’s trunk and leaves, not its root system.

Another thing the bonsai-grower must do is to trim (修整) the roots and branches of the tree periodically (定期地)。 Unless this is done, the plants will look unnatural. The Japanese ideal for bonsai is not to have the proper proportions and will have trees which are just like normal trees in everything, but in small size.

The last thing one must do is to be careful to keep the miniature (small) tree well-watered, or it will die.

As one can see from above, the art of bonsai-growing is one which requires a certain amount of time and effort. The satisfactions that growing bonsai brings can be great, however. Imagine having such a tree in your living room and passing it down through several generations of your family. That is exactly what bonsai-growing is all about: establishing a tradition of beauty which lasts for years and years and is a symbol of the beauties of the natural world.
