Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patients ― to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小)by greater needs: the need to protect from brutal(讨厌的) news, to uphold(支持) a promise of secrecy or to advance the public interest.

What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should doctors reject that he is ill, or minimize the gravity of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?

Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patients’ own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones.

Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them of risks destroying their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate(恶化)faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自杀).

But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians, a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanely conveyed (传达), helps patients cope with illness: help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after surgery.

There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious consequences seem avoidable only through deception(欺骗). Yet the public has every reason to know the professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

72. According to the author’s opinion, lies ________.

A. can benefit the patients

B. can help the patients to recover

C. can do nothing to the patients’ illness

D. can not benefit the patients

73. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

     A. There is a need to discuss whether to lie or not.

     B. It is true that “What you don’t know can’t hurt you” .

     C. The truthful information helps patients to deal with their illness.

     D. Most of the doctors believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition.

74. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

     A. There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly.

     B. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

     C. The public has every reason to be cautious of the professional deception.

     D. We need to discuss this issue in medicine, but not in other professions.

75. What does the author mainly discuss in the passage?

     A. Who benefits from deception.

     B. Deception is beneficial to patients.

     C. Whether patients should be told the truth of their illness.

     D. Whether patients really want to know the truth of their illness.

Noah felt like he was always hitting the books. While his friends were meeting for pickup soccer games after school, he was back home in his room reading and rereading the same material. But no matter how hard Noah studied, he had difficulty remembering things and his grades stayed average. Meanwhile, his friend Sean, who never seemed to study, always aced tests. It didn't seem fair.

Because Noah was so frustrated (挫败的), his dad and teachers made an appointment with the school psychologist. She diagnosed (诊断诊) Noah with a learning disability. Although Noah felt relieved to know what was going on, he was also worried. He didn't like the "disability" label. And he was concerned about what it might mean for his future. Would he be able to go to college and study engineering as he'd hoped?

For someone diagnosed with a learning disability, it can seem scary at first. But a learning disability doesn't have anything to do with a person's intelligence. After all, such successful people as Walt Disney, Alexander Graham Bell, and Winston Churchill all had learning disabilities.

Learning disabilities are problems that affect the brain's ability to receive, process, analyze, or store information. These problems can make it difficult for a student to learn as quickly as someone who isn't affected by learning disabilities. The way our brains process information is extremely complex --- it's no wonder things can get messed up sometimes. Take the simple act of looking at a picture, for example: Our brains not only have to form the lines into an image, they also have to recognize what the image stands for, relate that image to other facts stored in our memories, and then store this new information. It's the same thing with speech - we have to recognize the words, interpret the meaning, and figure out the significance of the statement to us. Many of these activities take place in separate parts of the brain, and it's up to our minds to link them all together.

If, like Noah, you've been diagnosed with a learning disability, you're not alone. Nearly four million school-age children and teens have learning disabilities, and at least 20% of them have a type of disorder that makes it difficult to focus.

No one's exactly sure what causes learning disabilities. But researchers do have some theories as to why they develop.

68. Noah’s dad and his teachers went to see the school psychologist to __________.

A. help Noah with his study                        B. help Noah remember things

C. find out the problem with Noah              D. encourage him to pick up soccer games

69. The writer take Walt Disney and Alexander Graham Bell for example to explain a learning disability has nothing to do with __________?

A. intelligence        B. habits               C. success             D. confidence

70. Which of the following statements is TRUE? ___________

A. When Noah was diagnosed with a learning disability, he didn’t feel relieved.

B. One may get confused because it is rather complex to process information.

C. If you’ve been diagnosed with a learning disability, you are not lonely.

D. So far, some exact causes of learning disabilities have been known.

71. What do you guess the author will go on writing? _________

A. Some tips to get over learning disabilities.

B. What to do with learning disabilities.

C. What causes learning disabilities.

D. Some theories of how to learn well.

NEW YORK―So we’re going away on weekends and sticking close to home. But are we traveling with the kids? Here’s how the down economy is changing the way we travel.

SECONDARY CITIES

Some smaller cities are stealing the glory(荣耀). Fort Myers, Fla. experienced double digit (位数) growth in January 2009 over January 2008, based on American Express Travel bookings. Cities like Portland, Ore. are also becoming popular destinations, with Travelocity data showing an increase of 38% over last year. Even Philadelphia’s star is rising, said Travelocity senior editor Shaw Brown.

Brown said it’s hard to explain exactly the reason for the boom: it could be a decrease in airfare or hotel prices or excellent marketing. Hotel rates in Fort Myers are down about 10%. But hotel rates in Portland are up, she said. She thinks Philadelphia’s higher popularity is due to good marketing, a decrease in airfare of 16% compared to the overall 8% decrease for domestic flights and more interest in historic destinations in general.

FAMILY TRAVEL

Rather than take a two-week vacation to Europe, families are going to national parks.

David Mandt, spokesman for the Association of Amusement Parks, is cautiously optimistic about the summer season. He said even when gas was $4 a gallon in 2008, people continued to visit theme parks―they simply selected parks closer to their homes.

While for years, park operators have used special offers, promotions and discounts to encourage families to visit at a specific time, the deals may be easier to find this year, especially when it comes to packages that include accommodations. Universal Orlando Resort has a deal allowing families to book a three-night package and receive two additional nights free. Packages include accommodations at a hotel near Universal and unlimited theme park admission to both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

Buckminster Fuller once said, “The minute you choose to do what you really want to do, it’s a different kind of life.” If you want to live abundantly, decide what you really want and figure out a way to do it. Be clear and live with intent (意向).

You may have heard of Fred Lebow. He complained to his doctor that he lacked energy. His doctor advised him to take up running. He fell in love with it! He was 39 years old when he entered his first race.

Fred joined the New York Road Runners Club, a Not-for-Profit organization and organized New York City’s first marathon race. But what Fred truly wanted to do was to bring people together. He believes that anybody should be able to run, people of all ages and of any country.

Not everyone in New York was excited about people running through their neighborhood. A youth gang warned him that nobody had better run through their turf. “That’s great,” Fred said. “I need someone to protect the runners in your area, and you look like just the fellows to do it.” He gave them each a hat, shirt and jacket and that year, when the marathon went through their neighborhood, these young men proudly guarded the runners along their way.

Fred decided what was truly important to him and he found a way to do it. He lived with intent. That single decision made his life remarkably different.
