A teacher honored her students by telling them how they each had made a difference to her and the class. She also presented each of them with a blue ribbon(绸带), which read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference.”
Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what recognition will do to people in general. She gave each student three more ribbons and instructed them to do the same to more people.
One of the boys went to a junior executive(经理) in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. Later that day the junior executive told his boss he deeply admired him for being a creative genius and asked if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon. The surprised boss accepted the gift delightedly.
That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and told him about his day. “One of the junior executives gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody to honor,” he said. “I thought about you. My days are busy and when I come home I don’t pay much attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just-wanted to sit here and well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. You’re a great kid and I love you!”
The startled boy couldn’t help crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, “I was planning on killing myself tomorrow, Dad, because I didn’t think you loved me. Now I don’t need to.”

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange arid exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment, seeing new sights, hearing new sounds and language, eating new kinds of food. This stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.
Unfortunately, the second stage can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life, we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family, friends, pets. All the little problems in life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when you face them in a foreign culture. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to rejecting or pulling away from the new culture.
The third stage is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called “at ease at last”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them.

49. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A. people feel better in their own culture
B. it is not easy to adapt to a new culture
C. culture shock doesn’t occur at the beginning
D. it is human nature to long for adventures

Swiss national Louis Palmer realized a childhood dream when he set off from his home country on July 3, 2007 traveling over desert, city and sea in 17 countries by a “solar taxi” to reach UN Climate Change Conference in
“In 1986, I was a 14-year-old boy. I was dreaming that when I would be an adult, I wanted to drive around the world.” He told reporters.
“Then it came to my mind, how can I travel around the world and enjoy the beauty of this world with a car that is polluting the world? Then I thought the perfect car would be a solar car.”
His car, which has become a major attraction at the gate of the summit of some 188 nations, was built in three years with scientific help from four universities and 15 Swiss companies.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with your blood. The key to your problem is that long nap (打盹,小睡) after dinner. If you didn’t sleep for hours during the early part of the evening, you would be more ready to sleep at bedtime. If you didn’t nap after dinner, you would not want to stay up so late, and you would not feel the need to take a sleeping pill. The pill is still working in your system when you get up in the morning. This helps account for the fact that you feel tired all day. You should get out of the habit of sleeping during the evening. Right after your evening meal, engage in some sort of physical activity―a sport such as bowling, perhaps. Or get together with friends for an evening of cards and conversation. Then go to bed at your usual time or a little earlier, and you should be able to get a good night’s rest without taking a pill.
If you can get into the habit of spending your evenings this way, I am sure you will feel less tired during the day. At first it may be hard for you to go to sleep without taking a pill. If so, get up and watch television or do some jobs around your house until you feel sleepy. If you fall asleep and then wake up a few hours later, get up by do not take a sleeping pill. Read a while or listen to the radio, and make yourself a few hours’ sleep that night, you will feel better in the morning than you usually feel after taking a pill. The next night you will be ready to sleep at an earlier hour.
The most important thing is to avoid taking that nap right after dinner and avoid taking pills.
