Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were not willing to work on farms along the Atlantic because they worried about the terrible storms that destroy buildings and crops. The farmer received a steady stream of refusals at the interview for a farmhand.

Finally, a short, thin man approached the farmer. "Are you a good farmhand?" the farmer asked him.

“Well, I can sleep when the wind blows,” answered the little man.

Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man’s work.

Then one night the wind howled loudly from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, “Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!”

The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, “No sir. I told you I could sleep when the wind blows.”

Enraged(激怒) by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Are the Super Girls super enough to make it into China's most authoritative(权威的) dictionary?

The editors of Cihai are working on a new edition, and they say they haven't decided yet.

“The editing preparation of the 2009 edition of the dictionary has just started,” an editor of Cihai said. “Which new words will be added, and which old ones will be deleted, remains unknown.”

The TV programme that brought the Super Girls into the public eye has certainly had an influence on Chinese society since its debut in 2004.

The editor said the new edition will include terms such as “Shenzhou VI,” the name of China’s second manned spacecraft, and Ba Jin, a late master of contemporary(现代) Chinese literature.

The argument began earlier this week, when media reported that Cihai, as a dictionary that prides itself on its educational and historical value, would not include terms such as “Super Girl.”

An official said that some online words were popular, but Cihai preferred words of both popularity and stability(稳定性) and those that can withstand the test of time and usage.

A reporter from China Economic News said: “We all agree on the great contribution of Ba Jin, but who can look down on the social influence of the Super Girl?”

A Professor told China Daily: “Of course ‘Super Girls’ should be edited into Cihai. If some strange words can be in there, why not ‘Super Girls’? Even though it may die out after a few years just as, say, ‘Shenzhou VI’ will be replaced by ‘Shenzhou IX’ one day.”

Cihai records new words reflecting the latest developments in the social and natural sciences, including biology, electronics, computer science and economics.

  64. What can we know about Cihai from the passage?

A. It will be edited and published in 2009.

B. Most of the words in Cihai withstand the test of time and usage.

C. It records all new words at home and abroad.

D. It is revised and edited every year.

65. The underlined word “debut” means _______.

A. performance                        B. names popular

C. first public appearance          D. stories known to all

66. Which of the following people has a clear opinion on whether “Super Girls” should be edited into Cihai?

A. The editor.                     B. The official.

C. The reporter.                  D. The professor.

67. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. The argument whether Cihai should include “Super Girls” was caused by a media report.

B. The term “Super Girls ” is known all over the country.

C. Whether the new edition Cihai will include “Super Girls” remains unknown.

D. “Super Girls” are not so famous as Mr. Ba Jin.

April sales figures show a disappointing month for Wal-Mart. The world's largest retailer reported a big drop in sales last month―its worst decline in nearly 30 years. As VOA's Mil Arcega reports, Wal-Mart is not alone.

A three and a half percent drop in sales does not seem like much. But for a company that sells more than $300 billion worth of goods every year, analysts say it is significant.

Alan Murray, the managing editor of the Wall Street Journal, says the drop represents Wal-Mart's biggest decline since 1979. “There are a number of things going on. Part of it is early Easter, so some of those sales got moved into March. Part of it is bad weather.”

But it may also signal a trend.  Across the board, retailers from Target to JC Penny and the Gap, reported weaker sales in April.  Analysts say the decline suggests high gasoline prices and the slowing U.S. housing market are finally catching up with consumers.  Murray says there may be other factors at play.

“Wal-Mart is not doing what it used to do very well. It made an attempt last year to sell clothes to high scale retailers. That didn't work. It had to back off.  It's remodeling(重新塑造) its stores.  That's not working very well,” says Murray.

To bring customers back, some say Wal-Mart needs to go back to its marketing basics. Retail analyst Dana Telsey says that means low priced goods in a friendly retail environment. “I think Wal-Mart is working to enhance(提高)its image. It could always be better. Going back to its roots is a way, that hopefully, customers will become familiar with it again.”

Wal-Mart is one of the biggest economic indicators in the retail industry. As the world's largest profit making enterprise, Wal-Mart's yearly revenues(总收入) represents about 2.5 percent of total economic activity in the U.S.

60. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. The world’s largest retailer.

B. The Wal Mart’s biggest drop in sales.

C. The Wal Mart’s biggest revenue in sales.

D. The world’s largest profit making enterprise.

61. According to the passage, the followings are all reasons for Wal Mart’s sales declined in April except _______.

A. cheaper goods

B. unfriendly shopping environment

C. early Easter and unpleasant weather

D. high gasoline prices and the slowing housing market

62. According to the passage, what was the popular image of Wal Mart?

A. It sold clothes to high scale retailers.

B. It often sold discounted goods.

C. It was one of the biggest retailer industries.

D. It sold low priced goods in a friendly atmosphere.

63. By “Wal Mart is one of the biggest economic indicators in the retail industry”, the writer suggests ________.

A. Wal Mart should remodel its stores

B. Wal Mart should hunt for money

C. Wal Mart works well in the U.S. economy

D. Wal Mart affects economic activity in the U.S. to some extent.

The human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us to adjust to the outside world. Without our nerves and our brain, which is a system of nerves, we couldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture(折磨) is based on the human body being open to pain.

But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir(苦行僧) who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.

The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation (感觉), we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.

A. We have to take care of our sense of pain.

B. We suffer from our sense of feeling.

A. fakirs possess magic power             B. Indians are not afraid of pain
