Exercise. Get fit. Watch your weight. We see these messages all around us in magazines and newspapers, but how do you choose the right activity?

Running

No other exercise will help you lose weight faster than running. It also strengthens your heart, lungs, and leg muscles. But it can hurt your joints. If you feel pain in your knees, you need to stop and choose a different activity.

Walking

Swimming

Swimming is a great way to strengthen different pasts of your body. But if weight loss is your goal, you may want to pass on the pool. The water in a swimming pool is cooler than our body temperature. The body naturally protects itself from the cold by keeping fat.

Cycling

Riding a bicycle will help you lose weight and work your leg muscles. But be careful! If you live in the city, stay on bike path, away from traffic. Or you can ride indoors on a stationary bike.

Weight lifting

We often hear of elderly people falling and hurting themselves. They just don’t have the strength to catch themselves. Lifting weights can prevent that. It also helps prevent injury form other activities. The drawback to weight lifting is that you’ll need to pay for a membership at a gym.

“WHAT is the right weight for my height?” is one of the most common questions both boys and girls ask. With the summer holidays coming, many teenagers are thinking about how to get fit, in relation to their weight.

Because people have different body types, there is no single weight that is right for everyone. But there is a healthy weight range(范围)for your height. It is called the Body Mass Index, or BMI. BMI is a formula that doctors use to see how much body fat a person has, based on his or her weight and height.

BMI = weight (in kilograms) / height2 (in meters). For adults, a BMI between 18.4 and 25 is healthy. For example, if a person is 1.75 meters, his standard weight should be between 56 kg and 76 kg. But things are more complicated for teens and children.

Young people go through a period of fast growth, called puberty (青春期). In this period the body begins making hormones (荷尔蒙) that cause great physical changes, like faster muscle growth and gains in height and weight.

The average person can expect to grow by as much as 25 centimeters during puberty before he or she reaches full adult height. But not everyone grows and develops at the same speed. Girls and boys differ greatly in the way they change as they grow.

This is why BMIs for teens are different according to gender(性别) and age. Doctors use the different percentiles (百分点) on a chart to decide whether teenagers or children are underweight or overweight.

A teen above the 95th percentile is considered overweight because 95 per cent of their age group have a smaller BMI. A teen below the 5th percentile is considered underweight.

Sounds complicated? To say it in an easy way, if you are a 16-year-old girl, your BMI should be between 17 to 24.7, as for boys of the same age, a healthy BMI score is between 17 and 24.

62. What is the purpose of the story?
     A. To tell you how to keep fit.
     B. To tell you a healthy range for your height.
     C. To explain BMI.
     D. To show how different boys and girls are during puberty.
  63. The word “complicated” in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.
     A. different                  B. interesting                C. hard to explain             D. surprising
  64. How do doctors decide whether a teenager is underweight or overweight?
     A. By checking whether their BMI is between 18.4 and 25.
     B. By using a BMI chart showing different percentiles.
     C. By checking whether their BMI is between 95% and 10%.
     D. By visiting a health website.
