TWENTY-FIVE years ago director Stephen Spielberg captured the hearts of Western audiences with his family classic, E.T.Now his Hong Kong director Stephen Chow is trying to do the same trick in China.

Chow's latest movie CJ7, in cinemas now, is a heart-warming story about a poor migrant worker and his son. When a strange alien enters their lives, father and son learn a lesson about the value of family.

Chow hopes his movie will help to make family films more popular in China.

Family films have been the main part of the Hollywood market for the last 40 years. They have given audiences movies like E.T., Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. However, there are few of these movies in China, where expensive history films are more popular.

A family film is not simply a children's movie. It is a film that is not only appropriate for children, but appeals to the whole family.

According to Raymond Zhou, a famous film critic, these films are rare in China because "very few families go to the cinema together".Because of this, there is little demand for movies that appeal to the whole family.

However, in the West, it is common for the family to sit down and watch a movie together.Tim Bridges, from London, says; "I love it at Christmas when I sit down and watch a movie with my family."

All family films contain similar messages about being honest; remaining positive and learning there is more to life than money.According to the American movie reviewer, Dave Johnson, this is because "When parents watch a movie, they want their children to be learning good values".

Just like when the alien in Spielberg's E.T.phones home to make contact with his family, Chow will hope Chinese audiences are tuned in and ready to receive his family movie message.

American economy after 1952 was the economy of a well-fed, almost fully employed people.Despite occasional alarms, the country escaped any postwar depression and lived in a state of boom An economic survey of the year 1955, a typical year of the 1950s, may be typical as illustrating the rapid economic growth of the decade. The national output was valued at 10 percent above that of 1954 (1955 output was estimated at 392 billion dollars). The production of manufacturers was about 40 percent more than it had averaged in the years immediately following World War Two. The country's business spent about 30 billion dollars for new factories and machinery.National income available for spending was almost a third greater than it had been in 1950.Consumers spent about 256 billion dollars; that is about 700 million dollars a day, or about twenty-five million dollars every hour, all round the clock.Sixty-five million people held jobs and only a little more than two million wanted jobs but could not find them.Only agriculture complained that it was not sharing in the room.To some observers this was a threatening echo of the mid-1920's.As farmers' share of their products declined, marketing costs rose. But there were, among the observers of the national economy, a few who were not as confident as the majority. Those few seemed to fear that the boom could not last and would eventually lead to the opposite-depression.

Electronic monitoring devices, mobile phone detectors and giant screens connected to close-circuit TV cameras. Does it sound like a high security operation? Well, the National College Entrance Examination(NCEE) in China is nothing less than that.

The education authorities' efforts to prevent cheating at the exam have gone almost unnoticed. The authorities launched the country's new monitoring system for the all-important exam yesterday. The system is based on local schools' networks and is connected to provincial headquarters, especially set up for the exam.

The government has plans to cover all the 31 provinces and regions in the next three years and offer the services for other national exams, too.

The records of students caught cheating during national tests, such as the college entrance exam, would be stored in the system and made available online for higher educational institutions' and future employers' reference.

But despite all these measures, cheating remains a big temptation for some candidates. The number of students caught cheating in last year's NCEE was 3,000, up from 1,300 in 2005. But this is hardly surprising because passing the NCEE is the only way most of the students can get access to higher education.

10.1 million students registered for this year's NCEE, 9.6 million taking the exam, but only 5.67 million would enter college. Among the successful candidates will be about 500,000 with special merits who will be admitted to universities directly, which means roughly 13 in every 24 candidates can actually enter college. That should explain why some students are temped to cheat during the exam.

Cheating in such a well-monitored exam is not an easy thing to do, says an MoE official, and it's very risky business too.The chance of a student getting away with cheating is minuscule. And if caught, he/she risks ruining his/her entire career because higher educational institutions and potential employers can always check his/her record.

1.The passage is most probably taken from ____.

A.A politics textbook.                           B.A fashion report.

       C.A reference book                                D.A newspaper.

2.According to the passage, what will happen if a student is caught cheating in the NCEE?

A.He/She will lose the chance to sit for more exams.

B.His/Her behavior will be recorded, stored and made available online.

C.He/She will get no records and lose the opportunity to go to college.

D.He/She will be blamed and his/her career and life will be put an end to.

3.The underlined word "minuscule" in the last paragraph probably means ____.

       A.tiny                     B.impossible           C.difficult              D.incredible

4.We can draw a conclusion from the passage that ____.

A.the education authorities are making great efforts to prevent cheating in exams.

B.although it is very hard to succeed, many students take a chance to cheat in exams.

C.honesty is still the best policy when it comes to exams.

D.it is not easy to get access to higher education in China.

Summer in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city, is the time for festivals.Between the end of July and the beginning of September, there are several different festivals which take place there.

The original Edinburgh International Festival started in 1947, and offered visitors a rich program of classical music, theatre, opera and dance. The same year the official festival began, and a handful of theatrical companies came to the festival without being invited and organized their own events, which grew into what is now called the Fringe Festival.

The term 'fringe' means something on the outside of the main event, but over the years, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival has become the largest of all the festivals, and indeed the largest arts festival in the world!

The Fringe features performers and acts that are less traditional and more unusual than those in the International Festival, and includes a lot of stand-up comedy shows(即兴喜剧表演), music and children's entertainment. The Edinburgh Fringe is regarded as an important place for up- and- coming stand-up comedians to perform at.

At the same time in Edinburgh there are various other festivals, such as the Jazz and Blues Festival, the Book Festival, the Film Festival, and even an Internet Festival! There is also a multicultural festival called Mela, which celebrates the diversity of people living in Edinburgh, in particular people with South Asian origins.

Edinburgh Castle is the site of one of the most splendid events - the Military Tattoo.A military tattoo has nothing to do with a tattoo(纹身) on your skin! It means a performance of military music, for example, by marching bands. In Scotland the military tattoo traditionally includes bagpipes(苏格兰风笛) and drums. This year the display will also include dancers, horses and motorbikes!

Though you have to pay to attend most of the events at the various festivals, there are several groups who organize large numbers of free events as well.

When Paul was a boy growing up in Utah, he happened to live near a copper smelter(炼铜厂), and the chemicals that poured out had made a wasteland out of what used to be a beautiful forest. One day a young visitor looked at this wasteland and called it an awful area.Paul knocked him down. From then on, something happened inside him.

Years later Paul was back in the area, and he went to the smelter office. He asked if they had any plans or if they would let him try to bring the trees back. The answer from that big industry was "No."
