A friend of mine met with an accident driving in the darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was 1 , he found himself unable to ask for help—his mobile phone went out of 2 as a result of the exhausted(用尽的)battery. Nothing could be done but 3 in the cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the 4 of the rescue.
It was almost 5 that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his 6 ,“First of all I checked up my 7 condition and found myself not in deadly danger. As there was no 8 to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from 9 .In this way I dozed(打盹)off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the 10 of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men 11 to explore a mountain cave and got lost. 12 to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of 13 . New holiday plan
Good news for all Chinese people! We will have one more day holiday every year starting in 2008, according to a new government plan.
The plan was passed by the State Council(国务院)this month and is likely to be formally announced before the new year. Under the new plan, New Year’s Day will remain a one-day holiday and Spring Festival will still last three days. However, it will now start a day earlier.
People will only have one day for the May Day holiday. But three traditional festivals, including Tomb-Sweeping Day, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival will be added on to the annual(每年的)holiday calendar. “Celebrating traditional festivals will help keep folk customs and Chinese traditional culture among the young,” said Cai Jiming, a professor at Tsinghua University.
Millions of people agree with him. In November, the government sought the public’s opinion about the holidays. According to Xinhua News Agency(通讯社),more than 1.55 million Chinese took part in an online survey and nearly 80 percent supported the plan.
Other people are happy about the change as there will be three more 3-day weekends with the traditional festivals. “There will be more choices when you choose to travel. We won’t have to squeeze through the crowds in scenic spots(景点)during Golden Weeks,” said Jin Lihua, a white-collar worker in Beijing.
The Golden Week system was first introduced in 1999, in the hope of encouraging people to spend more for the benefit of economic growth. The 8-year-old system achieved its goal with tourism profits increasing from 14.1 billion yuan during the first Golden Week to 64.2 billion yuan during the last National Day Holiday.
But voices calling for their cancellation are becoming ever stronger. People complain that having a nation of 1.3 billion on holiday during the same week resulted in crowded scenic spots, packed hotels and chaos(嘈杂) on trains and buses. Nationwide travel has also done harm to the environment around scenic spots.

SYDNEY: As they sat sharing sweets beside a swimming pool in 1999, Shane Gould and Jessicah Schipper were simply getting along well, chatting about sport, life and “anything else that came up”.
Yet in Sydney next month, they will meet again by the pool, and for a short time the friends will race against each other in the 50-meter butterfly(蝶泳)in the Australian championships at Homebush Bay.
Gould, now a 47-year-old mother of four, has announced she will be making a return to elite competition(顶级赛事)to swim the one event, having set a qualifying(合格的)time of 30.32 seconds in winning gold at last year’s United States Masters championships. Many years ago my student asked me the question, “Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?” Without taking time to reflect, I answered, “Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone’s life.” Even though I was sincere, that wasn’t a very good answer and my student didn’t let it slide.
“Let me get this straight,” he said, “You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?” He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I’m one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift.
Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach:
It’s in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输)in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until they reach the shore. You can’t have ripples without a “stone.” Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that’s what I strive to do.
I genuinely love teenagers.
I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some pot holes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they’ll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do so too.
Teaching isn’t for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.
1.Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writer’s being a teacher?
A.Because he thought her answer was unbelievable.
B.Because the writer was insincere.
C.Because the student was naughty.
D.Because the answer was difficult to understand.
2.What do you think of the writer?
A.Stupid. B.Honest. C.Conservative. D.Polite.
3.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The writer’s mother has the greatest influence on her .
B.The writer’s answer made the student confused.
C.In the writer’s opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach.
D.The writer made the student who asked the question angry.
4.We can infer from the text that .
A.the writer was also a good teacher in school.
B.the writer often plays with her students beside a pond.
C.the writer devotes herself to teaching and her students.
D.the writer often accompanies the students on their way home.
5.What is the main idea of the text?
A.A student’s silly question. B.A good teacher who likes students.
C.A confused student. D.The reason why I teach.

Two pieces of foreign news caught people’s attention. In the US, 18-year-old Michael Sessions won the mayoral(市长的)election in his town, to become the youngest mayor in the US. A similar thing happened in Britain. Martin Halstead, a high school graduate at 19, set up his own airline company.
Chinese teens admire their skills in getting such important posts. But have you ever thought that you could have the same success?
Burdened with heavy school work, many high school students in China are told to lock themselves in their studies and forget about other things.
But actually this is not wise.
Everyone is different and there is no need to follow the life paths of our ancestors(祖先). Sessions had dreamt of being a politician since he was a child. Halstead was crazy about airplanes and took every chance to learn about them.
So why not think outside the box, as these boys did? Consider your interests when planning your own path through life. Doing this can be more exciting and makes it easier to succeed. Interest is our best teacher.
But dreaming is not enough. A good education is a stepping –stone to a successful career. It helps broaden your horizons(视野)so you understand more about yourself and therefore perform better. That’s the reason Sessions chose while taking charge of his town.
Success still takes work. Without hard work, a dream is just like a cloud in the air that you never can reach.
1.What is the best title of the passage? (Within 10 words.)
2.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
Many high school students in China need to study hard in order to finish their homework, so they have no time to think about their hobbies.
3.Please fill in the blank in the seventh paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Within 10 words.)
4.How can you make your own life wonderful just as Sessions and Halstead did? (Within 30 words.)
5.Translate the underlined sentence in the seventh paragraph into Chinese.
