More teachers are starting off the school year with letters to parents and students to introduce themselves and set a tone(基调)for the year. The letters are a good way to establish positive communication with parents, several teachers told Education World.

"I think it's professional(专业的)," said Dorothy Peselli, an English teacher at Sparta High School in Sparta, New Jersey. Peselli, who distributes the letters the first day of school, told Education World, "It gives parents an image of you as a professional. If you start communication off in a positive manner, you will have the parents on your side when you need them."

In her letter to parents, Peselli encourages them to call or e-mail her with specific concerns about their children. "I want to work as a team to ensure that your child becomes an independent lifelong learner," Peselli wrote to parents last September. She also telephones the parents of all her students at the beginning of the year.

Peselli includes with the letter a classroom handbook(手册)listing policies and procedures. And she requires that both parents and students read and sign statements (included in the letter!) that they read the handbook. The student letter also lists needed supplies and dispenses encouragement. "Please come to class ready to work and learn. This will be an exciting year for all of us," it says.

Last year, Peselli taught at a different high school and parents there were "shocked," but appreciative, that she had so much contact with them. "I received roses and a thank-you note from one boy and his mother," Peselli said. She wishes her own children's teachers would take the time to write notes as well. "I never got a letter home from any of my daughter's high school teachers," she said. "It would be nice to know the background of some of the people who are teaching my daughter."

1.We may learn from the text that _____.

3.We can infer from the last paragraph that _____.

A.Peselli seemed to be populate among boy students

B.Peselli means to surprise parents by writing letters

C.parents were satisfied with Peselli's way of working

D.all Peselli's children are studying in high schools

4.The purpose of the text is to _____.

     A.introduce an English teaching method

B.give advice on how to teach students

C.show us how Dorothy Peselli makes teaching plans

Starting the day on an egg could keep your blood pressure(血压) under control, research suggests. Scientists have shown that eggs produce proteins with a function similar to that of powerful blood pressure-lowering drugs.

20090417

The researchers, from the University of Alberta in Canada, showed that when eggs come in contact with stomach enzymes(酶) they produce a protein that acts in the same way as Ace inhibitors, drugs taken by millions around the world to lower blood pressure. Fried eggs proved "particularly effective, but more work is needed to show the effects outside a lab and in the human body.

Earlier this month, British researchers declared that, contrary to popular beliefs, it is healthy to go to work on an egg. They concluded that the type of cholesterol(胆固醇) found in eggs has little effect on increasing heart disease risks.

Researcher Professor Bruce Griffin, from the University of Surrey, said: "The wrong beliefs linking egg eating to high blood cholesterol and heart disease must be corrected. The amount of fat in our diet has an effect on blood cholesterol that is several times greater than the relatively small amounts of cholesterol found in eggs. The UK publics do not need to be limiting the number of eggs they eat. They can be encouraged to include them in a healthy diet as they are one of nature's most nutritious foods."

The British Heart Foundation dropped its three-egg-a-week limit in 2005. However, almost half of Britons believe the limit still applies.

1.From the text we know that Ace inhibitors are _____.

C.a kind of illness                                 D.a kind of food

A.are the most nutritious food              B.have no effect on blood cholesterol

C.can be included in a healthy diet            D.are forbidden to be eaten in the UK

3.We can infer from the text that _____.

A.drugs to lower blood pressure will be replaced by eating eggs

B.stomach enzymes mixed with eggs can cure heart diseases

C.most Britons agree the three-egg-a-week limit should be dropped

D.about 50% of Britons think eating an egg a day is bad for their health

4.The text is meant ______.

A.to introduce a medicine made from eggs

B.to introduce scientific findings about eggs

C.to tell people how to lower their blood pressure

D.to advise people to eat as many eggs as possible

Anyone who reads a book and then goes to see a movie based on that book generally leaves the movie feeling a little disappointed. Why might this be? Both books and movies serve the purpose of entertainment. Both books and movies offer characters and plots. And, both books and movies provide a setting for a story. Books, however, offer a more attractive and complex form of entertainment than movies.

Although movies are entertaining to watch, books have advantages over them. First, books, in comparison to movies, can more easily seize the depths of characters and create a complex setting through the use of rich description. Books leave it up to the reader to interpret, imagine, and recreate the story in his or her own mind. However, movies are action packed and provide lots of visual stimuli(视觉刺激); still, it is the movie not the viewer that interprets the characters, plot, and setting. Second, books are not limited to time. A writer can write as much or as little as necessary in order to create and tell a story. Movies, on the other hand, are limited to an hour and a half to two hours of entertaining time before the audience(观众) begins to get restless. Last, reading is an intellectual form of entertainment. Readers can improve their level of reading and vocabulary in a harmless, healthy, and pleasurable way. Movies, on the other hand, are not as complex and entertaining as books, and they leave nothing to interpret. Therefore, the advantages and entertainment value of books outweigh(胜过) those of a movie.

To conclude, books, through interpretation, help the reader develop a sense of relationship to the characters and the story itself, but a movie strictly entertains. Books are a better form of entertainment than movies.

1.According to the author, _____.

      A.movies often make people disappointed

B.more and more people-prefer books to movies

C.books have many advantages over movies

D.both books and movies strictly entertain

2.The underlined word "intellectual" in the second paragraph may relate to _____.

      A.training            B.learning           C.translation        D.memory

3.We learn from the text that _____.

A.movies can easily seize the depths of characters

B.books provide more visual stimuli than movies

C.books leave readers nothing to interpret and imagine

D.movies are usually time limited compared with books

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

      A.Movies: Easy Form of Entertainment

       B.Books: Better Form of Entertainment

C.How to Produce Movies Based on Books

D.Why Are We Disappointed at Movies
