Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The topics on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life's tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18 to 21- year olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.
1.Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are _________.
A.more interesting B.unusually popular
C.more detailed D.more formal
2.Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows _________.
A.show disbelief in them B.are ready to face up to them
C.remain cold to them D.are willing to get away from them
3.We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows _________.
A.have become the only ones of its kind
B.exploit the weaknesses in human nature
C.appear at different times of the day
D.attract different people
4.What is the advantage of the Jerry Springer show?
A.The show exposes the dark sides of society.
B.The show pours poisonous waste into society.
C.Jerry sums up the whole idea of the show.
D.Jerry talks about the improvement of society.

Few people would question the value of taking part in sports for young people. With proper training, supervision, protective equipment and techniques, and an proper emphasis on winning, sports can develop a healthy body and spirit and a life-long interest in being active and fit .Without such measures, childhood sports can lead to injuries and even paralysis or death.
Even in the best conditions,no activity can be risk—free. But most serious hazards are preventable.Cyclists and football players can reduce their risks by wearing helmets;hockey players by wearing masks;basketball and tennis players by wearing eye guards;baseball players by wearing batting helmets.
Besides, risks to individual players can often be found, and thus prevented, through a properly performed medical exam before a child plays. For accidents that may not be preventable, having an emergency plan and first-aid equipment, and someone trained to use the equipment, can be lifesaving.
Still, each year, according to the American College of Sports Medicine, more than 775,000 children under 14 are treated in emergency rooms for sports injuries, nearly half of them preventable. An estimated 300,000 athletes experience exercise—related head illnesses each year, and almost all of them should have been avoided.
Further, from half to three—fourths of sports-related concussions(脑震荡) are never even diagnosed;the injured are often sent back in to play too soon and put at risk of another more serious brain—damaging concussion. To help reduce these risks, the National Center for Sports Safety, with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, offers a three-hour online safety course for coaches for $28 at www. Sports Safety. org.

A.prevention of injuries is not paid enough attention to
B.children under 14 are more easily hurt in sports
C.most head illnesses are related with exercise
D.none of the head illnesses should have happened

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”
1.The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.
A.make efforts to clone the endangered pandas
B.save endangered animals from dying out
C.collect DNA of endangered animals to study
D.transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
2.According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.
A.available panda eggs B.host animals
C.qualified researchers D.enough money
3.Which of the following should be the best title for the passage?
A.China’s Success in Pandas Cloning
B.First Cloned Panda in the World
C.Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas
D.China —the Native Place of Pandas Forever
4.From the passage we know that _______.
A.Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
B.scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit
C.Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches
D.about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century
