Struggling in the US? Move to China!

I graduated from the university with a degree of civil engineering. It is a good field but my heart was not in it. I wanted to be an actor or work in the entertainment industry……living a creative life. My choice of civil engineering was really a mistake but I realized too late. As soon as I graduated, I moved straight to Los Angeles- the home of the film and television industry!

For three years, I tried to get a job in that field. I often worked as an extra I movies and TV shows-standing in the background while actors are in the foreground. This was fun for a while, but I wanted a real acting job, where I was speaking! Sadly, in Los Angeles, there is too much competition. Every race and age is represented: old, young, black, white, Asian, and thousands of blondish-red haired Midwestern types like me. Being an extra couldn’t make enough money for me to live in LA．I had to do something else for money.

After three years of trying, I gave up my dream of being an actor and started a different career. I then tried network-marketing, but in the end, that failed. Unlikely though it seems, the potato promoted economic development by underpinning（支持）the industrial revolution in England in the 19^th century. It provided a cheap source of calories and was easy to grow, so it liberated workers from the land. Potatoes became popular in the north of England, as people there specialized in animal farming and home industry, while farmers in the south concentrated on wheat production. By a happy accident, the concentrated industrial activity in the areas and a potato-driven population boom provided enough worker for the new factories. Friedrich Engels even declared that the potato was equal of iron for its “historically revolutionary role”.

The potato promoted free trade by contributing to the end of Britain’s Corn Laws, which restricted imports of grain into the United Kingdom in order to protect domestic wheat producers. Landowners supported the laws, since cheap imported grain would reduce their income, but industrialists were against the them because imports would drive down the cost of food, allowing people to spend more on produced goods. Eventually it was not the arguments against the Corn Laws that led to their end-and more’s the pity. It was the tragedy of the Irish potato famine of 1845, in which 1 million Irish lost their lives when the potato crop on which they lived died. The need to import grain to relieve the situation in Ireland forced the government to change its position.

Ban Ki-moon was made the 8^th Secretary-General of the United Nations. In his speech at the ceremony of his taking office, he thanked all the Member States for placing confidence in him, and also expressed his deepest respect and appreciation to all the leaders and people of the Member States for their strong support.
