Many years ago, my dad was diagnosed with a terminal(末期的) heart condition. He was put on permanent disability and was unable to work at a steady job. He would be fine for quite a while, but would then fall suddenly ill and have to be admitted to the hospital.

He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the terminally and critically ill children. He would talk to them and play with them and do arts and crafts with them. Sometimes, he would lose one of his kids. In certain instances, he would tell the grieving parents of these children that he would soon be with their child in heaven and that he would take care of them until they got there. He would also ask the parent if there was a message they would like to send with him for their child.

My dad’s assurances seemed to help parents with their grieving. One of his kids was a girl who had been admitted with a rare disease that paralyzed her from the neck down. I don‘t know the name of the disease or what the prognosis usually is, but I do know that it was very sad for a girl around eight or nine years old. She couldn‘t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He would visit her whenever he could and paint for her. All the while he would tell her, see, you can do anything you set your mind to.

Eventually, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was discharged because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children hospital for a little while because he became ill. Sometime later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, he was at the volunteer counter in the lobby of the hospital. He noticed the front doors open. In came the little girl who had been paralyzed, only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave my dad a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read, thank you for helping me walk.

My dad – who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture---loved every single child in that hospital.

1.Why did my dad volunteered at the local children hospital?

A.Because he would fall suddenly ill and have to be admitted to the hospital.

B.Because he loved kids so that he could recover soon.

C.Because he could ignore his disease when he was busy together with the sick children.

D.Because he loved working with the terminally and critically ill children.

2.What does the underlined word “paralyzed” in paragraph 3 mean?

      A.prevented         B.disabled            C.depressed          D.caused

3.The purpose of writing this passage for the writer is to tell us      .

A.since you’re got a terminal disease, you should love others

B.sometimes we should care about the patients who have serious disease

C.if you love others, then others will love you as well

D.sometimes love is more powerful than doctors

NEW YORK -Helicopters continued to take off and land Monday, giving tourists a bird’s-eye glimpse of the Manhattan skyline, even as tour operators and city officials reacted to new warnings issued by federal officials that al-Qaeda might use helicopters in terrorist attacks.

Some heliport and helicopter operators said they might take additional security precautions because of warnings about helicopters being used as weapons by terrorists.

But they emphasized that they have been on heightened alert(警觉) since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued three bulletins Friday to 18,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide warning about the possible use of helicopters, rental vehicles and rented storage facilities by terrorists.

One bulletin said that “although there is no credible, specific evidence supporting use of helicopters in an aerial(空中) attack in the United States, the threat cannot be discounted."

A second bulletin noted that limousines(大轿车) should be more closely examined because they "have larger storage capacity than regular passenger vehicles." It added that with their aura of importance, limousines may be allowed where the public would not.

Still, much attention is on New York, where financial institutions were recently the focus of a new terrorism alert and the Republican National Convention will take place at the end of this month.

New York City has three heliports used by companies that provide aerial tours. One of the tour operators, Liberty Helicopters, said in a written statement that it was contacted last week by the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force.

No details were given on what was discussed.

The statement said that since Sept. 11, the company has upgraded its security procedures to include physical screening and a check of passenger identification. It also does not allow sightseers to carry any personal luggage on helicopter tours.

One company that ferries individuals into New York City on New Jersey-based helicopters said that police seem to have stepped up their scrutiny in past days.

1.All the following can be possibly used in terrorist attacks EXCEPT      .

      A.helicopters                                      B.rented entertainment facilities

2.In the following statements, which one is TRUE according to the passage?

B.Sightseers are not allowed to take any heavy luggage on helicopter tours.

C.There is no evidence supporting use of helicopters in an aerial attack in the United States.

D.No detailed information about what was discussed in the written statement of Liberty Helicopters is mentioned.

3.Why is there much attention on New York?

A.Because New York is the center of the United States.

B.Because there is more possible use of helicopters.

C.Because New York financial institutions are likely to become a new terrorism target.

D.Because New York hasn’t yet be on the heightened alert since the Sept. 11 attack.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that      .

A.helicopters will not be used because of the possibility of terrorist attacks

B.you will be treated as usual if you take a bird’s-eye glimpse of the Manhattan skyline.

C.terrorist attacks will possibly happen when the Republican National Convention takes place
