The arrival of computer, some people predicted, soon make paper a thing out of date. And guess what? Bill Gate’s dream of a computer on every desk has been more or less realized. Yet, most of people working at those desks fire knee-deep in paper.

Some research from a new book, the Myth of Paperless Office suggests our increasing use of paper is due to the introduction of the very digital technology that was supposed to wipe it out. The studies show that it can lead to a 40%rise in paper consumption.

Xerox’s main business involved paper, and it was also alarmed by the prospect of its going out of fashion. So the research center invented the computing and printer technology that made sure it didn’t. Xerox knew what they were doing.

But our attachment to paper is truly amazing. Why store e—mail messages in paper files, which take up valuable space and are effectively unsearchable, when you can keep them on a hard disk and look through them for keywords? Why print off quantities of documents which is to be thrown away after the meeting is over, when they can be handed out electronically via intranets (内部互联网)?

If people love paper, there must be a reason for it. It is highly portable, flexible,

and consumes no battery power. And it doesn’t have to be turned on before you can read it.

So the problem with the predictions is that they are always solution-driven. In fact, technology is not always the answer. The answer is not that people use so much paper, but that they don’t make good use of it.

1.What changes has the computer brought in for paper?

A.More and more paper is needed.

B.Its sale is reducing and it is to disappear.

C.Fewer people prefer paper to a hare disk.

D.More paper of fine quality is produced.

2.What does“the very digital technology” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The new book.                                B.The hard disk.

C.The computer.                                 D.The technology of printing.

3.To protect their production from disappearing, Xerox——.

A.had the computing and printer technology invented

B.took off the price of their production

C.introduced new technology of paper making

D.encourage people to store messages by writing them on paper

4.Which word can describe paper best according to the reasons for people’s love of paper?

   A.Fashionable.        B.Convenient.    C.Traditional.         D.Effective.

5.What can we learn from the whole passage?

A.Bill Gates’ vision of the computer is to wipe paper out.

B.It is a stupid way to store e—mail messages on a hard disk.

C.Digital technology is the only solution to reduce the use of paper.

D.To print documents on papers has become a great waste now.

The ocean bottom, a region nearly 2.5 times greater than the total land area of the Earth, is even today largely unexplored. Until about a century ago, the deep-ocean floor was completely inaccessible and hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,600 meters deep. Totally without light and subjected to intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the Earth’s surface, the deep-ocean bottom is a strange environment to humans, in some ways as forbidding and remote as the outer space.

Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks for over a century, the first detailed global study of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1969, with the beginning of the National Science Foundation’s Deep Sea Drilling Project(DSDP). Using techniques first developed for the offshore oil and gas industry, the DSDP’ s drill ship, the Glomar Challenger, was able to maintain a steady position on the ocean’s surface and drill in very deep waters, taking samples of  rock from the ocean floor.

The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15-year research program that ended in November 1983. During this time, it sailed 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000 samples of rocks around the world. Those samples have allowed geologists to reconstruct what the planet looked like hundreds of millions of years ago and to make out what it will probably look like millions of years in the future, Today, largely on the strength of evidence gathered during the Glomar Challenger’ s voyages, nearly all earth scientists agree on the theories of plate tectonics (构造学)and continental drift that explain many of the geological processes.

The samples of rocks drilled by the Glomar Challenger have also provided a climatic record stretching back hundreds of millions of years. The information of past climatic change can be used to predict future climates.

1.What does the underlined word “inaccessible” in line 3 means?

       A.unrecognizable     B.unreachable         C.unusable              D.unreasonable

B.It is similar to the ocean floor in being strange to the humans.

C.Rock formations in outer space are similar to those found on the ocean floor

D.Techniques used by scientists to explore outer space were similar to those used in ocean exploration

3.Which of the following is true of the Glomar Challenger?

A.It is a type of submarine.

B.It is an ongoing project.

C.It has gone on over 100 voyages.

D.It made its first DSDP voyage in 1968.

4.The Deep Sea Drilling Project was sign firent because it was          .

A.an attempt to find new sources of oil and gas

B.the first extensive exploration of the ocean bottom

C.made up of geologists from all over the world

D.supported entirely by the gas and oil industry

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers advised. “Barbara be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience,” How right they were!

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there when the things get tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” When others shout, “No, you can’t!” It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mclintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn’t stop working on her experiments.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. As author and poet Samuel Ulman once wrote, “Years wrinkly the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. Patricia Mellratl retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, “My father, long ago, told me,I never made a dime until I stopped working for money.”

We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-been”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after“what-can-be”.We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses-finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a back-yard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, the beauty of a rainbow.

1.What is the passage mainly talking about?

A.Enthusiasm is more important than experience.

B.Enthusiasm can give people more success and fame.

C.Enthusiastic people will never get old.

D.Enthusiasm can make you succeed and enjoy life.

2.We can inter than enthusiasm is more important for a person especially when          .

A.he is in trouble                                     B.he is getting old

C.he can do what he love                         D.he has succeeded

3.The author mentions Pablo Casals in the third paragraph to show that          .

A.enthusiasm can make people feel young

       B.music can arouse people’s enthusiasm

C.enthusiasm can give people inspiration needed to succeed

       D.enthusiasm can keep people healthy

4. How many examples are referred in the passage to show the importance of enthusiasm?

       A.Three             B.Four               C.Five                  D.Six

5.Which proverb may the writer agree with according to the last paragraph?

A.A good beginning makes a good ending.

B.Don’t cry over the spoiled milk.

       C.Love me, love my dog.

D.All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting ill, new study findings suggest. In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill.

The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive feeling style” can help get rid of the common cold and other illnesses. Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective as in happiness improving immune(免疫)function and subjective as in happy people being less troubled by a throat ache or runny nose.

“People with a positive feeling style may have different immune responses to the virus,” explained Dr Sheldon Cohen. “And when they do get a cold, they may stop their illness from being more severe.

Cohen and found in a previous study that happier people seemed less easy to catch a cold, However, some questions remained as to whether the feeling itself had the effect.

For the new study, the researchers ask 193 healthy adults complete some standard measures of personality and feeling style. Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive feeling style, while those          had a negative style.

The researchers gave them some drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus. Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had, while the researchers collected objective data like daily mucus(粘液)production, Cohen and his partners found that warm people were likely to keep cold at bay.
