The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture to help perform operations for about 4,000 years without putting the patient to sleep. This involves inserting flexible needles into certain parts of the body. The needles used are available in a number of stores in China and everyone may buy them.

To learn how to use needle takes about one month of training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the acupuncture knows how to insert the needles so the needles themselves are not painful. This person also knows whereto place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. The needles are not necessarily inserted near the region where the pain is to be prevented. In the past, a particular operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body. But now this operation requires only 3 or 4 needles.

Today the Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. They are trying to develop a convincing theory to explain how the needles work in preventing pain, or why a needle in the wrist, for example, would prevent the pain in the area of the mouth.

A patient who needs an operation is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients choose acupuncture because there is no sickness after the operation whereas the chemical may make the patient sick for a few hours or a day.

Room for Revolution : George Washington and His Philadelphia Friends

March 16, 2007-August 30, 2007

Charles Willson Peale′s George Washington at Princeton is on view at the Museum which was lent from a private collection . This visually striking and finely made life-size portrait (肖像) records Washington′s 6-foot-2-inch figure in a pose highlighting strength , composure , and elegance .It is put up in a room neighboring to the Powel House parlor , a period room from one of Philadelphia′s greatest eighteenth-century private homes , where Washington was frequently entertained by his friends , Samuel and Elizabeth Powel . Both spaces contain important examples of furniture by Philadephia′s finest craftsmen , such as Thomas Afflect and John Aitken . Among these is a side chair specially ordered by the Washingtons when living in Philadelphia .

Painted in Philadelphia in 1779, Peale′s painting was immediately sent to Europe to promote Washington′s reputation as a leader and the cause of the American Revolution , then in progress . Later ,during Europe′s Napoleonic Wars , a Spanish duke with strong sympathies with American Revolution owned the picture . At that time he added the complicated carved caption to it , which describes Washington as “a liberator of his country who abandoned absolute power.”

Everyone agrees that it′s necessary to reduce carbon

emissions (排放物) around the world. There is less agreement over exactly how nations should go about achieving a more carbon - free planet. Thus, the environmental equivalent: cap – and – trade carbon emissions, or place a carbon tax on all users?

With cap – and – trade programs, governments limit the level of carbon produced by an industry. Companies that hold their emissions below the cap can sell their remaining allowance on a carbon market, while companies that go beyond their limit must purchase credits on that market. Carbon taxes are more straightforward: a set tax rate is placed on the consumption of carbon with the idea that raising the price will encourage industries and individuals to consume less. At the moment, cap – and – trade has the upper hand, but doesn′t defeat the tax just yet.

Supporters of the tax argue that a cap – and – trade system would be too difficult to administer – and too easily gamed by industries looking to sidestep emissions caps. Cap – and – trade advocates contradict that like all other flat taxes, a carbon collection would relatively burden lower – income families, who spend a greater percentage of their income on energy than rich households.

So which system will have a larger effect on carbon consumption? A 10% carbon tax might reduce the demand for carbon about 5 % or less, according to an analysis by the Carbon Tax Center, an environmental advocacy group. That may not be enough. Businesses and governments haven′t figured out how the two competing systems can work together, but in the end, the world may need both.

1.The passage focuses on           .

A.programs of collecting taxes                 B.systems of reducing carbon emissions

C.reasons for reducing carbon emissions D.contradictions between the two systems

2.According to the cap – and – trade program, companies          .

A.are forbidden to produce carbon emissions

B.are allocated the same amount of carbon consumption

C.can sell their remaining allowance within their limits

D.can sell the extra amount of carbon at a higher price

3.Carbon taxes work by            .

       A.burdening well – off families

       B.encouraging industries to consume carbon

C.raising the price for carbon consumption

D.limiting the carbon consumption of industries only

4.The underlined word “cap” in the second paragraph most likely refers to         .

       A.limit                    B.credit                  C.level                    D.rate

5.We can learn from the passage          .

A.carbon taxes are difficult to carry out

B.cap – and – trade plays a greater role at present

C.cap – and – trade will be preferable in the future

D.carbon taxes will be preferable in the future

With big handbags becoming a key fashion accessory (配件) for working women, health experts are warning they can also become a key health concern.

Bags for women have become bigger and heavier as designers combine briefcases with handbags and straps have become longer, resulting in many users complaining of neck, shoulder and back problems.

"I see so many women with neck pains and headaches and what I usually do is look for their purse and pick it up," said Jane Sadler, a family practice physician at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas. "We take it over to the scale and weigh it and usually they're anywhere from 7 to10 pounds...We're really going to see women with more and more problems later on if we continue the big purse craze."

William Case, a physical therapist (临床医生) in private practice in Houston, Texas, urged designers "to place a cute, educational caution tag (标签) on all bags to inform of potential neck and shoulder dangers." Above all, he recommended correct posture while carrying big purses, keeping the head and shoulders upright. Patients should also frequently change the size and weight of purses carded.

"The extra-large purses are quite phenomenal. They look beautiful when the women wear them, but I don't know how aware they are of the potential problems," Case said.

Placing objects on one shoulder was one of the least efficient (有效率的) ways of carrying a load, according to a professor from Cornell University in New York State. "This causes a great imbalance," he said. "If a big bag is a fashion accessory, then occasional and symbolic use is fine. If not, then keep it light."

A. are supposed to carry more things      B. are more comfortable to wear

C. make the wearers look nicer            D. show the status of the wearers

2. Jane Sadler would "look for their purse and pick it up" in order" to see whether the purses _________.

3. Which correctly explains the meaning of the underlined word "posture" in the 4th paragraph?

A. The way you position your body.

B. The part of your body where you place a weight.

    C. The strength you use to carry a weight.

    D. The height of the weight you carry.

4. Which of the following belongs to the kind of bags causing the health problems?

     A                 B.                 C.               D.

5. None of the experts advised big bag users to ___________.

A. be aware of the big-bag problems

B. wear big bags in the right way

    C. avoid using big bags very often

    D. sacrifice the fashion to keep fit
