Last Sunday I saw a worst storm in years. It came sudden and went on for over three hours. After lunch, I went into my room to have a rest. The air was hot, but all was quiet. Then a strong wind started to blow into my room. Pieces of paper on my desk flew high into the air and some flew out the open window. As I ran out to catch it, big drop of rain began to fall. When I come back into my house, it was raining more harder and harder. Then I heard a loud crashing sound from the back of the house. When I ran out of my room to find out that had happened, a big tree had fallen down and broke the top of the backroom.

When in doubt, cut that out! Yeah, yeah, doubting Thomas may have had a point in his day, and life may not be what you want it to be, but if you constantly doubt yourself, how can you accomplish anything?

Where is your confidence? What possible good can come from taking the negative aspect of any situation and growing it into acceptance?

The purpose of achievement is to attain a goal. So, if you set your goals and strive to get there, it should be assumed that you are moving toward your goals no matter what you are doing, right?

When watching a football game, one of those great high school starter games, set to determine who starts when the real game begin. I noticed the coach called “defense” only when the team was “protecting” their goal. As long as the team was fighting for more ground they played “offense”. Along the same lines, I've heard the phrase, “A strong defense requires a good offense.” Simply put, if you concentrate more on gaining ground than on protecting your goal, your accomplishments will be greater. Time spent protecting your goal is wasted time, when you could be working toward attaining your goal rather than preventing others from reaching their goal.

In business, if you waste your time focusing on what the competition is doing rather than working toward meeting your goals, you don't get very far.

Focus your attention on where you're going. Don't waste time worrying about where the competition is. You will gain ground while they are watching you. Smile as you reach your destination.

6. The writer of the passage intends to tell us________.

A. a common rule in a football game

B. how to beat your competitors

C. to overcome our doubt and achieve our goals

D. how to deal with our doubt in life

7. The author's purpose of mentioning Thomas in the first paragraph is to________.

A. show that famous people can change our life

B. tell us that successful people never doubt themselves

C. ask us to learn from successful people

D. tell us it's quite natural for people to doubt themselves

8. The author suggests that in business we should________.

A. avoid too much competition

B. seek as much cooperation as possible

C. focus on our own goals

D. know our competitors as well as ourselves

9. What did the author learn from watching a football game?

A. Slow and steady win the race.

B. A good offense is the best defense.

C. Teamwork leads to success.

D. A miss is as good as a mile.

10. The passage is intended for________.

A. football players         B. coaches

C. businessmen           D. common readers

Just by living, it is apparent that the media has profound effects on people. How or why or to what degree, only the individual can judge for himself/herself. No matter if the media is small or major, everyday events are what effects people. A commercial about ice cream can send millions running to the nearest grocery store ready to try the new flavor.

While reading the online article about how poor sleep contributes to health problems, I was surprised to hear that not getting enough sleep was such a big problem. I was absolutely freaked out (使震惊) by this article, so right after I decided to get a good night's rest from then on. That night I drank hot tea, took a long bubble bath and listened to peaceful music before bed. I didn't sleep a wink that night, and it's because of the pressure I was putting on myself to “sleep well”. This article has macro effects because it is possible that many people have read the article and been affected.

Another media effect is a movie. It is originally a novel that is adapted into a movie. I normally hate literature that is put into film, but this was an exception. My mother was in love with the book Pride and Prejudice, so when I went to Blockbuster the other night it caught my eye. I rented the movie and fell in love with it. I was in fact so inspired by the movie that I decided to read the book. Thus, it was an unintended (无意识的) effect because the writer/adapter did not produce this movie thinking that it would make viewers want to read more classic books.

1. What is mainly talked about in the passage?

A. The different kinds of the media.

B. The effects of the media on people.

C. Our pressure under the influence of the media.

D. Our addiction to the media.

2. The author decided to read the book Pride and Prejudice because ________.

A. his mother liked reading it

B. the movie was well produced

C. he didn't like the movie

D. the producer wanted viewers to do so

3. The last paragraph is written to show that ________.

A. the media can influence us in a positive way

B. a movie is usually a poor betray of a classic book

C. people usually like movies instead of original works

D. we can't love a classic without reading the original work

4. The author probably believes that________.

A. the influence of the media is usually misleading

B. we should remain calm under the influence of the media

C. the media can cause great pressure to people

D. people can't avoid the influence of the media in their daily life

5. The author's attitude towards the media can be described as ________.

A. subjective    B. negative  C. objective  D. positive

Dear Editor,

I'm writing to tell you about a food poisoning accident. Several days ago, my neighbor ate a bag of food buying from the market. After the meal, they had stomachaches and their faces turn pale. Lucky, one of their friends found the accident and immediately called an ambulance, which carried them quickly to a hospital. After several hour's treatment they finally escaped from death.

As some illegal businessmen only interested in making profits to become rich quickly, we seldom care about the necessary safety measures or care which happens to consumers. They must be charged by law. Meanwhile, I do hope whole society can realize the important of food safety and begin taking action together to make sure food is safe.

I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself”were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable(好客的) and friendly—but only once they had been introduced to new people.

However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.

I experienced Italian hospitality first-hand on a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was berated(斥责) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seat-it had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.

Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to intrude on someone else's privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

6. The purpose of the author is to tell us ________.

A. his travelling experience

B. cultural differences to show hospitality and politeness

C. the culture shock he experienced in Italy and the US

D. how to adapt ourselves to a new culture

7. What do we know about the occupants of the carriage when the author was travelling in Italy?

A. They all laughed at the author for his mistake.

B. They would not bear a mistake like the author's in public.

C. They were all on the side of the gentleman.

D. They all showed their understanding of the author's mistake.

8. The author probably believes the Italian people are________.

A. cold        B. rude           C. hospitable       D. helpful

9. According to the last paragraph, English passengers sat in near silence because________.

A. they were all strangers to each other

B. they were too tired to speak

C. privacy was a valued tradition in England

D. everybody had their own share of privacy

10. The last paragraph mainly tells us ________.

A. the difference between English and American culture

B. why Americans like to start a conversation

C. different attitudes of Englishmen and Americans towards conversation

D. the importance of privacy among Englishmen

With so many other ways to get information these days, do we still need books? Old habits die hard, and are passed down from generations. If your parents read to you, the chances are you will read to your children and so on. Well, that is an ideal world.

I think it comes from the educational side of life. If you have a good experience in school with books, then reading on after school years won't be a problem. For me I did very well in English language and literature as I had an inspiring and interesting English teacher who let us write our stories freely without correcting our spelling right away. The creative side of you should always come first and then the technical errors can be corrected.

Starting reading early is very important to children's relationship with books. If you casually read to your children then the books will have always been there in their lives and by the time reading comes along at the age of 4-5 years old it will all be fun and start to make sense. It has to be said that books are vital to learning.

Getting information and searching on the Internet is fine and necessary at this moment but it requires reading and reading requires practice, I believe we should relax whilst learning and digesting facts and information, and this can only be done with the simple book. Learn the basic habit of reading a book and then expand on and use the technology available, like e-books to make things convenient. But when you're not in a rush or whilst on a sunny beach, spending time with your children, what could be better than holding that book in your hands and feeling the achievement of getting to the last page?

1. The author of the passage thinks that ________.

A. the habit of reading should be passed down from generations

B. books are less important with so many other ways to get information

C. reading to children has become an old habit

D. it's difficult to get children to read books today

2. We can conclude from the second paragraph that ________.

A. children can develop the good habit of reading by themselves

B. it's not necessary to correct children's errors in reading

C. reading on after school years is becoming a difficult problem today

D. a good teacher can cultivate the habit of reading

3. According to the third paragraph, if you casually read to your children, they will ________.

A. form the habit of reading in time

B. have no idea of their relationship with books

C. lose the interest in reading books later

D. realize the importance of reading by the age of 4

4. What is the author's attitude towards the Internet?

A. He thinks it can only ruin people's pleasure in reading.

B. He thinks it is an important way to get information.

C. He thinks it will replace traditional books.

D. He believes we should limit the use of it.

5. We learn from the last paragraph that ________.

A. reading e-books is a better way to digest facts and information

B. the technology available can help us learn the basic habit of reading books

C. reading books on a sunny beach is only a way to kill time

D. reading can be a great pleasure when you are not in a hurry
