Florence Chadwick was a great swimmer. However, not all of her efforts worked out. In addition to working hard, she had a secret for success. At the age of 34, her goal was to become the first woman to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast. Alongside Florence, in one of the boats, her mother and her trainer offered encouragement. They told her it wasn’t much farther. But all she could see was fog. They urged her not to quit. She never had… until then. With only a half mile to go, she asked to be pulled out. Still thawing(使变暖和) her chilled body several hours later, she told a reporter, “Look, I’m not excusing myself, but if I could have seen land I might have made it.” It was not tiredness or even the cold water that defeated her.        It is reported that two 66-year-old men graduated this summer from Sun Yat-sen University, a well-known university in Guangzhou.

Li Yiquan, a Chinese-Singaporean, earned a postgraduate(研究生) degree in software engineering, while Ang Toon Aun, a Chinese-Malaysian, earned a bachelor's degree with a major in Chinese as a foreign language.

Li, a retired engineer, now lives in Hong Kong. His daughter also received a postgraduate degree this year, but from a British university. So she participated in his graduation ceremony in Guangzhou. Li said he had a special feeling for Sun Yat-sen University because his parents and brother graduated from there.

It wasn't easy for Li to return to school while in his 60s, he said. He failed math exams several times after beginning classes, even though he had a good foundation in math; he graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University majoring in physics 40 years ago and worked as an engineer before retiring.

Ang Toon Aun, 66, was tired of his business career, so he decided to study Chinese at the university and passed level 9, the highest level of the Chinese Test.

"There's nothing in the world that makes me happier than study," said Aun. Many old people in Malaysia were encouraged to keep studying after retirement, but few of them chose to study on campus for a degree as he did.

Oh November 16, 2009 Peking University released a list of 39 high school principals in 10 provinces who have the chance to recommend students. If the students recommended pass a round of interviews by Peking University, they will have an extra 30 points added to their national college entrance exam scores if they apply to the university after the exam. Peking University said the reason behind the move was a desire to give students with comprehensive and special abilities a chance to stand out.

However, a survey conducted by leading Chinese web portal sina. Com showed 10,046 out of 14,227 people surveyed were against the new idea. Most said the recommendations were unfair on other students. Xue Yong, a Peking University alumni who is now an assistant professor at Suffolk University, told Qianjiang Evening News the experiment could be dangerous if it is abused. But Qu Jun, former deputy director of Shanghai municipal education commission, said the experiment represents much needed change to the existing university entrance system, which had been criticized for years.

  I am a 19-year-old girl named Gina. When I was 17, I gave blood for the first time. It was a little scary because I don’t like needles and I am afraid of looking at my own blood.

After signing a form, I lay in the chair.
