The gray-haired lady can’t wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago.

Not all cases of Alzheimer’s disease look like this, but Alzheimer’s is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75. It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer’s. In the early stages, people may exhibit short-term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.

While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain’s nerve fibers (神经纤维), their effect is certain. Alzheimer’s destroys not only the patients, but also spouses(配偶), friends and families.

What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Though many reasons other than Alzheimer’s disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis(诊断)and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.

What feeling will you likely experience if a loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn’t remember you are married.

Life for the Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them.

       B. She was sad about the death of her father.

       C. She can’t search for her father without being watched.

       A. their families and friends will suffer from the same disease

       B. their families and friends will experience mental sufferings

       C. they will certainly die in 8 to 10 years

       D. they will forget everybody but their spouses

67. Memory loss occurs ________.

       A. from Alzheimer’s disease and nothing else

       B. from sadness, shock, anger, and so on

       C. for a number of reasons

       D. with changes in personality

68. From the passage we know that        .

A. early treatment may stop Alzheimer’s disease occurring

B. it is still unknown what causes the changes in the brain’s nerve fibers

Do you love holidays but hate the increase of weight (体重) that follows? You are not alone.

Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these delicious foods.

With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.

Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast (宴会), have a small, low fat snack (小吃).This may help to keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.

Is veg food healthier than non-veg food? I feel this is a very common topic that people speak on.Please give me your opinions on this topic.

Rao

12-18-08

So far as veg food is concerned, it is also proved to be a healthy and nutritious diet, but has very few items which can provide us with proteins, but if you see non-veg food like eggs, chicken, and many more, such foods have a large content of proteins in them.

Sai

12-19-08

Man basically is herbivorous(食草的). If we look at the animal kingdom

We can see that all the herbivorous animals have the similar dental(牙齿的)

structure, which clearly shows that the human being also ought to be vegetarian

by birth. It is only the living conditions that make man carnivorous(食肉的).

The vegetarian foods are easily digestible.

Santos

12-20-08

Non-veg food items are better than veg items. A healthy person requires complete diet and veg + meat makes the diet complete. The only caution that needs to be taken is not to have non-veg items on a daily basis. Once in a week or couple of weeks will be best.

Krishna

01-03-09

When we eat non-veg, we are all veg by nature. The chicken that we eat feeds on grains, the mutton that we eat feeds on grass, and the fish that we eat feeds on simple plants. So non-veg food by logic(逻辑)is better and suited for hauman beings.

Khan

Non-veg food is equally important in our diet as it helps in many ways, especially fish and other seafood as fish contains omega 3 which makes our immune system(免疫系统)stronger. Do you know that most of the veg food put together does not contain as much omega 3 as fish alone contains!

65.According to Rao, what is the problem with veg food?

A.It damages our immune system.            B.It has few nutrients.

C.It contains too much omega 3.              D.It is lacking in protein.

It's not easy being a teenager — nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you you'll still be there for him when he needs you.

Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don't insist he tell you what's on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he'll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you're always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager's privacy(隐私). Never read him his mail or listen in on personal conversations.

Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family's telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.

Should students wear school uniforms or not?

People might think that I am behind the times, but I believe wearing uniforms at school is a good idea. A school uniform helps us feel like part of a group. For example, when our school team plays with another school team, the players will feel encouraged to see all their school friends wearing the school colors.

These days, when a school does not have its own uniform, many students wear very fashionable clothes to school. Some are even trying to show others that they have the coolest clothes. I think this is wrong. How we look is not as important as what we learn at school. Why would we need to wear these kinds of clothes to school when the purpose of going to school is learning? If we want to look smart all the time, we will have to wear different clothes every day. We come to school five days a week. This means we have to buy new clothes all the time. Won’t it become too expensive to look smart?]

As students, we exercise and do sport all the time. We need clothes that are comfortable and do not need special care, but fashionable clothes are usually difficult to take care of. I always play football with my friends after school. I like to wear a cotton shirt and cotton shorts instead of fashionable clothes. I guess my mother wouldn’t be happy if I played football in an expensive shirt.

It is true that some school uniforms look very boring. Many of them are made up of a shirt and trousers for boys, and a blouse and a skirt or a dress for girls. They are usually in boring colors as well, like grey, black, white and brown. Like you, I am also a young person who likes bright colors and fashionable clothes. However, we should pay attention to our studies during this important time in our lives.

My father never wears a suit at home or at the weekend, but he wears one at the office every weekday. I know we want to feel happy at school and it is nice to be different. However, like my father, perhaps we should wear our favorite clothes only at home or at the weekend.

As many as one in five US teenagers have some degree of hearing loss, according to researchers.

They say the problem is growing.
Teenagers really don’t pay attention to how much noise they are exposed (暴露) to, Josef Shargorodsky of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston told Reuters. “Often people won’t notice it, but even slight hearing loss may affect language development,” said Shargorodsky, one of the researchers.
The study compared surveys from the early 1990s and the mid-2000s. Each included a few thousand teenagers. In the first survey, about 15 percent of teenagers had some degree of hearing loss. Some 15 years later, that number had risen by a third, to nearly 20 percent.
“This certainly is big news,” said Alison Grimes, an ear doctor. Hearing loss is very common in old people, Grimes said, but she added that it was worrying to see it happen in the younger age group.
In babies and young children, hearing problems are known to slow language development. The science is less clear for teenagers, but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could affect learning, said Grimes,.
The reasons for the rise are still unclear. When researchers asked teenagers about noise exposure – on the job, at school or from activities, for example – the teenagers didn’t report any change. But Shargorodsky said that might not be true. “We knew from before that it is difficult to ask this age group about noise exposure – they underestimate (低估) it.” Few people would call it noise when they listen to music on their MP3 player, for example. “There is a difference between what we think is loud and what is harmful to the ear,” said Grimes.
Although it’s not clear that the MP3 players cause teenagers’ hearing loss, Grimes said it was still a good idea to turn down the sound and take short breaks from listening.
63. According to the researchers, in a US class of 40 students, about ____ students have some degree

of hearing loss.

A. one              B. five             C. six           D. eight

64. Which of the following statements is true according to the article?
   A. Slight hearing loss does not influence learning.

B. Only a few old people have hearing problems.
   C. Hearing problems can slow language development.

D. Noise exposure is clearly noticed by teenagers.
65. About hearing loss, it can be inferred that ________.

A. the reasons for the rise have been found           B. MP3 players are to blame

C. listening to loud music may be a cause            D. noise is the main reason

66. The article was written to ______.

A. warn teenagers that loud music might be harmful

B. explain what kinds of noises might affect studies

C. suggest that teenagers shouldn’t listen to loud music

D. show how important hearing can be for learning

Today the media paint a mixed picture for the public concerning the role hackers play in our society. On the one hand they praise the skill hackers display when breaking into secure networks and causing damage with clever viruses. At the same time they dramatize the damages and think of the activity as a crime. The criminals are painted out to be terrorists. This mixed message begs the question as to whether or not we should view hackers as criminals or thank them for pointing out security problems in sensitive networks.

If we as the general public were unaware of the risks associated with using the Internet to do business or deliver personal information and hacker activities exposed us to this knowledge, we might view them as having helped us. We then would be more careful to protect ourselves. The reality is, however, that the public is aware of the risks they are exposed to on the Internet and the computer industry is aware of weaknesses of security measures in networking already. Hence, no value is generated from hackers taking advantage of the known flaws in order to play a game of cat and mouse with other people’s property(财产). Furthermore, since virus-scanning software is expensive and widely used, hackers are costing the public money and resources to protect themselves from their attacks.

There are laws in every state that address hacker activities either directly or as an extension of existing laws. These laws set fairly clear guidelines on what is considered legal and not legal to do within the field of computer use. If a person violates these laws, then they have committed a crime. If you or I break into a house or business and destroy property we will expect to be held accountable. Hackers are no different are should expect the same treatment. If I break into a house and watch the owners TV or read their personal files I have broken the law. The same is true for a hacker who breaks into a computer network and accessed confidential information. Also, the Federal Government has laws concerning computer use; privacy of information that also apply to the typical activities carried on by the average hacker. Clearly it is a crime to engage in or pursue any activities in violation of these laws.

The conclusion we should all come to is that hackers are criminals by definition of their activities and should not be praised by the media. We do not praise bank robbers or burglars for bypassing the security of our home or savings and loan. A clever or creative criminal can not be excused of his or her crimes. If we continue to do this we encourage them to continue and put ourselves at risk. Furthermore, they need to expect to pay the consequences for their actions. We will all benefit by clearly understanding that a hacker is a criminal and not to be praised or admired by our children or us.

66.   In the article, the author is mainly talking about _________ .

A.    media have a mixed opinion about the role hackers play in society

B.    what we can do to prevent hackers from attacking the Internet

C.    how we can solve the Internet problems without hackers.

D.    hackers are criminals and they do not provide services.

67.   According to the article, which of the following is NOT true?

A. The author thinks the hacker is a terrorist, as media paint out.

B. hackers generate no value but take advantage of flaws of the Internet.

C. According to the law of the states and the federal, hackers are illegal.

D. hackers are clever, but we can’t excuse them for this.

68.   The underlined word “dramatize” in the third paragraph probably means _______.

A. enlarge   B. deny    C. lessen   D. decline

69. We can infer from the third paragraph that_______.

A. Every state and the federal government have their own laws.

B. Some of the laws think hackers are illegal but others don’t think so.

C. The federal laws are completely the same as those of each state.

D. There is no difference between the federal laws and those of each state.

70. Which of the following shows the reason why the author thinks hackers don’t provide services but are criminals?

  a. Hackers play games with people’s property without generating value for people.

  b. Hackers are costing the public money and resources to protect themselves from their attacks.

  c. Hackers break into secure networks and cause damage with clever viruses.

  d. Hackers are clever, but they, as criminals, can not be excused of his or her crimes.

Every day 25 million U. S. children ride school buses. The safety record for these buses is much better than for passenger cars; but nevertheless, about 10 children are killed each year riding on large school buses, and nearly four times that number are killed outside buses in the loading zones. By and large, however, the nation's school children are transported to and from school safely.

Even though the number of school bus casualties (死亡人数) is not large, the safety of children is always of intense public concern. While everyone wants to see children transported safely, people are divided about what needs to be done — particularly whether seat belts should be mandatory (强制性的).

Supporters of seat belts on school buses argue that seat belts are necessary not only to reduce death and injury, but also to teach children lessons about the importance of using them routinely in any moving vehicle. A side benefit, they point out, is that seat belts help keep children in their seats, away from the bus driver.

Opponents of seat belt installation suggest that children are already well protected by the school buses that follow the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) safety requirement set in 1977. They also believe that many children won't wear seat belts anyway and that they may damage the belts or use them as weapons to hurt other children.

A new Research Council report on school bus safety suggests that there are alternate safety devices and procedures that may be more effective and less expensive. For example, the study committee suggested that raising seat backs four inches may have the same safety effectiveness as seat belts.

The report sponsored by the Department of Transportation at the request of Congress, reviews seat belts extensively while taking a broader look at safety in and around school buses.

68. Each year, the number of children killed outside buses in the loading zones is about _________.

A recent survey of teachers found that an unhealthy passion with celebrity(名人) culture is having a negative effect on British students’ studies and it discovered that celebrity couple, the Beckhams, are the favorites among most students. Many students are ignoring building their own careers to seek a chance at fame instead, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) survey found.

Almost two-thirds of teachers said sports stars were the type of celebrity many pupils wanted to follow while more than half of students wanted to be pop stars.

The survey said the celebrities that students aspired to mostly were David and Victoria Beckham who live in Los Angeles now. Soccer player Beckham is on the top of the survey while in second place, with almost a third of the survey’s votes, was his 33-year-old pop star wife.

Almost half of the 300 teachers surveyed said pupils tried to look like or behave like the celebrities they most admired, with some girls even dressing "unsuitably".

"We are not surprised about the influence of celebrity culture in schools —it reflects the current media passion with celebrities and the effect of celebrity culture on society as a whole," ATL general secretary Mary Bousted said in a statement.

"Celebrities can have a positive effect on pupils. They can raise pupils’ aspirations and desires for the future. However, celebrity culture can spread the idea that celebrity status is the greatest achievement and reinforce the belief that other career choices are not as valuable," said one primary school teacher. "Too many of the pupils believe that school success is unnecessary, because they will be able to get fame and fortune quite easily through a reality TV show."

56. The story mainly tells us that ______.

A. the Beckhams are mostly admired in Britain

B. most students think that being pop stars is more valuable than other career achievements

C. the celebrity passion has a harmful impact upon British students’ studies

D. a survey was made recently about the popularity of the stars

57. Why does the author mention that pupils tried to look like or behave like the celebrities they most admired, with some girls even dressing “unsuitably”?

  A. The pupils think it interesting to pretend to be the celebrities.

B. The behavior or the dress of celebrities can be followed as examples.

C. The author wants to show the negative influence these celebrities had on the students.

D. The author just wants to show being pop stars is very valuable to the students.

58. What is not TRUE according to the story?

A. Celebrities can’t have positive impact on the students.

B. Beckham and Victoria are husband and wife.

C. The so-called celebrity culture does harm to the pupils’ ideas about achievement.

D. Many students believe that school success is unnecessary.

59. The best title of the story is _____.

  A. Sports Star David Beckham

B. Survey of Students about Celebrities

C. Harmful Effect of Celebrities on Students

D. Better to Be Pop Stars Than Sports Stars
