Can you really travel around the world for free? Li Jun, a 17-year-old girl from Shenzhen Foreign Language School, still can’t believe her 10-day free training（训练）camp in the Alps in Switzerland last month was true!

But how did she achieve this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?

Last October, a piece of short world news in a newspaper---“Have a chance to see the world, for free”, caught her eyes. When she asked her friends if the story was real, they laughed at her, for they thought she was day-dreaming. However, Li decided to apply（申请）online the following weekend.

“Opportunity is everywhere. I’d like to keep my eyes open and catch the chance.” she told herself. What happened next was tests on health, hobbies and awareness（意识）of environmental protection. She passed all of them very easily.

On December 14, Li Jun surprised her friends with an invitation letter from the program, the Pangaea Young Explorer Selection Camp set up by South African explorer Mike Horn.

On January 11, Li left for Switzerland, with several newly bought ski-suits in her suitcase. Over the next week, she and 15 other teenagers from around the world took part in exciting training and lessons. They took day-trips up the Alps to an altitude（纬度）of 3,200 meters, went sledging（滑雪橇）at night using modern equipment. They were also encouraged to complete difficult journeys up mountains, down hills, and through forests.

Because of her performance during the training, Li was chosen as one of the eight young explorers to join Mike Horn in the South Island of New Zealand in May. She will write for the newspaper and share her fun experiences there with readers.

Brazil and Barcelona forward Ronaldinho has been named the 50^th European Footballer of Year at great party in Paris held towards the end of 2005.

Ronaldinho, 25 years old, became the third Brazilian to win the title after Ronaldo, who won it in 1997and 2002, and Rivaldo , who won it in 1999.

“To be here with all those great players is a dream. This gives me huge encouragement to keep working and try to do well. Victor’s hobby was collecting stamps. He had stamps from many countries, like England, Canada and China. On his birthday, can you guess what people gave him? That’s right—stamps.

When I was about 12, I had an “enemy”, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn’t a good student; I talked too much; I was too proud, and so on. I tried to bear all these as long as I could. The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children.  On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.

In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called “satellite kids”, who live in one place but whose parents live in another place.

Asians are immigrating to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the West. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kid” problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them.     Most Americans would have a difficult time telling you, specifically, what the values are which Americans live by. They have never given the matter any thought.

     Over the years I have introduced thousands of international visitors to life in the United States. This has caused me to try to look at Americans through the eyes of foreign visitors, I am confident that the values listed in this booklet describe most (but not all )Americans, and that understanding these values can help you, the international visitor, understand Americans.

     It is my belief that if foreign visitors really understand how deeply these 13 values are ingrained in Americans, they will then be able to understand 95% of American actions —actions which might otherwise appear “strange,”“ confusing,” or “unbelievable” when evaluated from the perspective (aspect) of the foreigner's own society and its values.

Americans wear black for mourning Chinese wear white. Westerners think of dragons as monsters. Chinese honor them as symbols of God. Chinese civilization has often shown such polarities（极性） with the West, as though each stands at extreme ends of a global string. The Chinese could learn much from Western methods for determining scientific truth, said Kaiping Peng, a former Beijing Scholar, who is now a UC Berkeley assistant professor of psychology. And Americans could profit enormously from the Chinese tolerance for accepting contradictions in social and personal life, he said.

“Americans have a terrible need to find out who is right in an argument,” said Peng. “The problem is that at the interpersonal level you really don’t need to find the truth, or maybe there isn’t any.” Chinese people, said Peng, are far more content to think that both sides have flaws and virtues, because they have a holistic awareness that life is full of contradictions. They do far less blaming of the individual than do Americans, he added.

In studies of interpersonal argument, for example, when subjects were asked to deal with contradictory information stemming from conflict between a mother and a daughter or a student and a school, Peng found that Americans were “non-compromising, blaming one side—usually the mother—for the causes of the problems, demanding changes from one side to attain a solution and offering no compromise” in dealing with the conflict. Compared to this angry, blaming American stance, the Chinese were paragons（模范）of compromise, finding fault on both sides and looking for solutions that moved both sides to the middle.

Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won a Prize of Excellence from the American Club of Architects (建筑师)。

On the shore of Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina, the prize—winning beach house was built to replace one destroyed to pieces by Hurricane Hugo 10 years ago. In September 1989. Hugo struck South Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or pulling down 36, 000 homes in the state.

Before Hugo, many new house built along the shore were poorly constructed, and the instructions for building were not strict, according to architect Ray huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. All new houses are required to follow stricter instructions after the terrible experience in Hugo. The new houses on this land should be able to stand a terrible hurricane with the strongest wind 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.

At first sight, the house on the island look anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood roof makes it look like “a large bright ball” at night, according to one observer. But looks can be not true. The wooden formation of the house is supported with long steel sticks to give it huge strength. To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on wood pilings, part of which were buried in the sand. In fact, they are strong enough to bear the weight of the house. They also lift the house above the sea water brought by the hurricane. The pilings allow the sea water to run under the house instead of running into it. “These waves of water come ashore at treat speed and cause most of the damage done to the beach-front buildings,” said Huff.
