MUMBAI – Indian commandos battled into the early hours of Friday to end a multiple hostage crisis in Mumbai after suspected Islamic militants killed 125 people across the city.

Officials said they had almost totally cleared the luxury Taj Mahal hotel where gunmen had been held up for more than 24 hours.

Indian security forces personnel released hostages from Nariman House in Mumbai. Thirty-nine people were rescued from the five-star Oberoi hotel, where "mopping up（清理火场）" operations were still underway, police said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the militants had come from "outside the country.”

The Press Trust of India said one Pakistani militant had been arrested, although Pakistan's government fiercely denied any involvement.

Indian media reports said between six and nine foreign nationals were among the dead in Mumbai -- including a Japanese businessman, an Australian, a Briton , a German and an Italian.

At least five gunmen had been shot dead and one captured, police said. Fourteen security personnel were also killed, including the head of Mumbai's anti-terror squad.

To draw maximum international attention, the militants used small groups to attack a total of about a dozen targets in India's financial hub , including the main railway station, a hospital and a restaurant popular with tourists.

An unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahedeen claimed responsibility, with one gunman telling an Indian TV channel by phone that the outfit（装备）was of Indian origin and motivated by the treatment of Indian Muslims.

Up to 327 people were reported wounded.

The main Bombay Stock Exchange was closed until further notice, as were shops, schools and businesses.

Prime Minister Singh said the aim had clearly been to spread panic by choosing high profile（知名度高的）targets and "indiscriminately（随心所欲地）killing foreigners. "

Witnesses said the gunmen had been very particular in their choice of hotel hostages. "They said they wanted anyone with British and American passports," said one British guest at the Taj Mahal hotel.

Scores of people queued up to use a cash machine after it started giving out double money requested.

The cash machine, outside a Sainsbury’s store in Barham Road, Hull, attracted a big crowd hoping to take advantage of the fault, on Tuesday night. Police officers were eventually sent to guard the machine and prevent more money from being taken out. The fault is thought to have affected cash machines at supermarkets across the city. It is not yet known whether the customers will have to repay the cash or how much money was taken out.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said, “Officers were sent out and an attempt was made to contact the owners of the machine and officers remained at the scene to prevent more people from taking more money out. ” The spokeswoman said those who benefited from the fault could be traced and face theft charges, but investigations would only take place if the operator made an complaint.

The cash machine is owned by a company called Payzone, a spokesman later confirmed. He said the fault was due to the machine being filled with the wrong denomination（面值）of notes. An investigation was under way into the incident and the machine had been taken out of service, he added.

The Payzone spokesman said, “The cash in Transit Company which is contracted to service this ATM has filled it up with the wrong denomination of notes, which means it is paying out double. ” He could not say how much money had been taken out of the machine, or whether it would have to be paid back. It was understood that a number of cash machines owned by other companies had also been affected by this problem in Hull, he added.

Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday.

They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels（血管）dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications.

"We have a pretty impressive effect," said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology（心脏病学）at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

"Blood vessel diameter improved," he said. "The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise. " A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.

When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots（凝块）that cause heart attacks and strokes. "We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health," said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.

Miller's team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel anxious while the researchers did ultrasound tests designed to show blood vessel function.

Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked—in most cases in this group heavy metal—blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.

Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. "I asked myself what other things make us feel real good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. . . . It makes me feel really good," he said.

Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual.
