We live in a very competitive world. Everybody seems to be competing with someone at some level. Each week we spend hours playing or watching others compete in sporting activities all over the world. We cannot help being impressed by the level of excellence that these people achieve.

In sport and business, competition encourages excellence in performance. Where there is no competition, improvement in performance is less likely. Some level of competiton is a hve-to in all aspects of life.

The following story makes this point.

As two friends are hiking in the forest they encounter a huge, ferocious and obviously hungry Grizzly Bear. Its next meal has just come into sight, and they are it! The first friend calculates that the bear will overtake them in 27.3 seconds. At that point, she panics; realizing there is no escape. She faces her friend, with the fear of death in her eyes. To her amazement, she observes that her friend is not scared at all. To the contrary, her friend is quickly but calmly taking off her hiking boots and putting on jogging shoes. “What do you think you’re doing?” the first hiker says to her companion, “You’ll never be able to outrun that grizzly.” “That’s true,” says the companion, “but all I have to do is outrun you.”

We all compete when the motivation is strong enough. However, competition is not the real purpose of life. Fulfilling the measure of our creation can only be achieved individually.

Most of time, we are not in competition with any other person, so we do not have to compare ourselves with others. There is only one person that can fulfill our role and that is us. This means that others cannot beat us to the finish line because there is no race. This is not to say that others do not have a similar role to us, but it is never the same. This is important to understand if we are going to enjoy life. Every human being is unique and cannot be duplicated. In this, I am not referring to the body, only to the spirit, soul, or the essence of a person.

A.competition plays an important role in social development

B.we don’t have to compete since we are all different

C.we have to beat others in order to survive

A.realize we are living in a world of competition

B.face competition in a balanced state of mind

C.have a strong sense of being a possible winner

Culture shock is so named because of the effect it has on people when they enter a new culture. Experts have been interested in these effects and have agreed on five basic stages of culture shock. These stages are general and should only be used as a reference. Not every individual will go through each stage, and one stage may last longer than another for different individuals.

The hardest thing for most travelers to deal with is the emotional "roller coaster" they seem to be riding. One moment they feel very positive toward the new culture, and the next moment very negative. It seems common that international visitors and immigrants vacillate between loving and hating a new country. Feelings of separation and alienation can be intensified if they do not have a sense of fitting in or belonging.

Extreme tiredness is another problem people face when entering a new culture. There can be a sense of a greater need for sleep. This is due not only to physical tiredness, but also to mental fatigue. This mental fatigue comes from straining to comprehend the language, and coping with new situations.

The impact of culture shock can vary from person to person. There can be significant differences because some people may be better prepared to enter a new culture. Four factors which play into these are personality, language ability, length of stay, and the emotional support received.

It is logical to think that when people are deprived of their familiar surroundings they will feel disoriented. One solution some have found is to bring a few small reminders of home. Pictures, wall hangings, favorite utensils, and keepsakes(纪念品)are all good candidates to make things feel more familiar. Another helpful activity is to establish little routines that become familiar over time. Even better is fitting things that were part of the regular routine back in the home country into the routine established in the new culture. This will make people feel more at home.

53.A person experiencing “culture shock” is mostly like            .

A.a dog without shelter                                   B.a bird back home

C.a horse lack of training                                D.a fish out of water

54.What does the underlined word “vacillate” in the second paragraph mean?

       A.hesitate                   B.stop                        C.watch                     D.suffer

55.What is the result for one experiencing “culture shock”?

A.Seeming to be riding a roller coater.

B.Having to agree on five basic stages.

C.Having all home things taken abroad.

       D.Suffering both physically and mentally.

56.To overcome “culture shock”, one had better         .

A.make some necessary changes in one’s way of life

B.recall part of regular routine in the home country

C.buy a few reminders like pictures or wall hangers

D.enjoy things brought from home country more often

New York times, Nov, 24,2011-It is not just any bug, but the native nine-spotted ladybug. And its reappearance is something of a relief, because it is the official New York State insect, even though the last recorded sighting of it in New York was 29 years ago.

Its absence had not gone completely unnoticed. There was a moment in 2006 when the State Assembly, realizing that the state insect had left the state, tried to replace it with a different species of ladybug, an attempt that fortunately gave in to law.

And now—after all these years—the state insect has been found. Like so many other New Yorkers, it was seen summering in Amagansett. Peter Priolo, a volunteer participant in an effort called the Lost Ladybug Project, found the ladybug on July 30 in a patch of sunflowers during a group search he had organized.

“I didn’t realize it was a nine-spotted when I found it,” Mr. Priolo said. He was on his way to do an end-of-the-day ladybug record, so, he said, “I put it in my jar and hurried back to meet with everybody.”

If the ladybugs are making a comeback, it is only beginning. The lost Ladybug Project started surveys in 2000. As of 2006, only five nene-spotted ladybugs had been found in North America in the previous 10 years, none of them in the East. Then one lone ladybug was found in Arlington, Va. None had been found in the East since, and only 90 have been reported in North America.

After scientists at Cornell confirmed Mr. Priolo’s find, they went to the Amagansett farm in mid-August to lead a search that turned up about 20 more of the bugs. An area between rows of carrots and beans turned out to be a hot spot. “We found a lot of them on cosmos and zinnias,” said Dr. Losey said, an insect expert. The farm is part of the 10,000-acre Peconic Land Trust in Amagansett, and it is organic. For ladybugs, Dr. Losey said, “you couldn’t design a better place.”

Dr. Losey wants to find out if it makes sense to reintroduce this strain of the ladybug in other areas. And he expects volunteers to be back out in the field when ladybug season starts again in the spring. Now, he said, “we need to find out more places where there are just as many.”

D.it is a new species unknown to New York

51.What does the second paragraph of the passage imply?

A.It’s against the law to bring new insects to New York.

B.The State Assembly don’t like to live with Ladybugs.

C.The absence of the state insect had never been known.

D.The state insect had to leave because of a new species.

52.From the last two paragraphs we know that       .

A.only some insect experts are really interested in ladybugs

B.Dr Losey is quite confident about the future of the insect

C.most ladybugs have m moved to live in the down area

D.more vegetables will be grown to welcome the state insect

Garden Route, South Africa

Take in fresh sea air in this beautiful coastal setting as you cruise the famous Garden Route in the Western Cape in South Africa. A wildlife break is a must, as is enjoying great meal stops along the route. There are wildlife reserves throughout the Graden Route National Park you can swing into and spend a sleepy morning in a car looking for giraffes and lions. And just over your shoulder in the big blue there are whales to be watched (if the season is right).

Top tip: Add a trip to the Eastern Cape to your Garden Route trip. It is much less known than the Western Cape and full of great landscapes. The gas station is occasionally seen.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

Sweep along this dramatic coastal road in Austrlia with views of the Southern Ocean from Geelong to Portland, in Victoria, and you won’t regret it. Anyone who has driven it just can’t stop talking about it, and with good reason. There’re loads to see and plenty of great stops. There’s whale-watching here too, and other natural life. And to top it all, there’ll be plenty of good old Aussie kindness and welcome when you pull in for lunch or a coffee stop.

Top tip: Rent an open-top car so you can really drink in that sea air.

Stelvio Pass, Italy

If you like snake-like paths and mountain passes, you’ll love this. Stelvio in Italy. The mountain slopes stretch away on either side of the road, with snow-topped peaks within sight. There’s a great view down the pass. And from the top, it’s just a short sweep away from the Swiss border, so if you are gripped by mountain road driving, you can drive from here down to Swiss ski resort of Davos. Stelvio has 48 hairpins(急弯) on the north side and 12 on the descent(陡坡) to Bormio, so this route is not recommended for new drivers, or those with a fear of heights. This descent is often featured in the Giro d’Italia, the Italian version of the Tour de France, so you may have glimpsed it on the television.

I was working as a swimming coach when I met Anita for the first time. Seeing I was swimming, Anita coming to me and asked me if I could help her to swim as her personal trainer was not available. I have been a swimming coach for a club and there was no reason to deny her request.

In few minutes we became good friends and I was told she suffers from back problem. Her doctor advised her to swim as it might be helpful to her. I took it easy as I have been sailing in the same boat and swimming was a good option.

With my experience, I appreciated the thought and recommended her to swim on daily basis. Without any hesitation she said, “I suffer from spinal arthritis(脊椎炎), a bigger problem than yours.”

As we discussed types of oral medications for back problem, she came closer to me and whispered, “I can make you feel better. My problem is more severe and requires a spinal injection on weekly basis rather than oral medication”. Her acceptance to her reality gave me strength to bear my pain. I was glad we met. Undoubtedly, she made me feel better.

Arthritis has made my life difficult, one problem leading to another. It has made me treasure the people in my life. The days are getting harder and Anita is an inspiration for me. Anita is working for an architectural firm, irrespective of all her medical problems. Meeting Anita helped me to understand that there are three angles to every problem – my angle, your angle and the right angle. Right angle is the reality that you do not want to accept. I accepted the right angle in my life that my problem is big but others might have a bigger problem. If they can live with courage and determination, why cannot I?

We always focus on ‘my angle’ and neglect the ‘right angle’. Life is easier and better once we understand the ‘right angle’.

A.Because her personal coach wasn’t there.

B.Because they had became good friends.

C.Because the author was a swimming coach.
