Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. Raymond Orteig, a New York hotel owner , offered $25,000 to the first person to fly nonstop from New York to Paris. Charles Lindbergh wanted to be that person.

On May 20th , 1927 , Lindbergh took off early in the morning from Garden City , New York. He flew his plane , the “Spirit of St. Louis”, through fog , rain , and sleet. He landed in Paris 33 hours and 30 minutes later. He had flown 3,600 miles (5,800 kilometres).

You can see Lindbergh’s airplane at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington ,D.C. After Lindbergh made his famous flight to Paris , he sent the “Spirit” back to the United States on a navy ship. He flew it on a victorious tour of Latin America. Then he flew the “spirit” to Washington and gave it to the Smithsonian Institution. At the National Air and Space Museum, which is a branch of the Smithsonian , you can see not only the “Spirit”, but also the Wright brothers’ “Flyer” and many other famous airplanes and spacecrafts.
