Australia has very strict laws relating to the importation and possession of certain goods. Food, plant material and animal products including many common souvenirs (纪念品) from overseas could introduce some of the world’s most serious pests and diseases into Australia. Failing to declare (申报) quarantine items (需要检疫的物品) on arrival could destroy the country’s  agriculture, tourism industries and special environment. So you must declare for inspection of all food, plant material and animal products to check that they are free of pests and diseases. You must tick YES on the Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) to declare if you are carrying any food, plant material or animal products. If you fail to declare or dispose of (处理) any quarantine items, or make a false declaration:

Man is eager to draw quick profit from the trees. Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor, which resulted in floods and starvation.

Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade its villagers to see this. The villagers want wood to cook their food with, and they can earn money by making charcoal (木炭) or selling wood in the town. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.

This does not only mean that the villagers’ children and grandchildren have fewer trees. The results are even more serious. For where there are trees their roots break the soil up — allowing the rain to sink in and also hold the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert.

50. The purpose of writing the passage is to ______.

A. tell people the use of wood                B. tell people the function of tree roots

C. warn that man mustn’t destroy forests any more

D. explain how trees help to prevent drought and floods

51. In the writer’s opinion, ______, or the forests will gradually disappear.

A. measures must be taken                   B. people shouldn’t draw benefit from trees

C. government must realize the serious results    D. unless trees never be cut down

52. From the passage we learn it is ______ to prevent the forests from slowly disappearing.

A. necessary but impossible                  B. necessary but difficult

C. impossible and unimportant                D. difficult and impossible

53. In the last paragraph the writer wanted to make it clear that ______.

A. where there are no trees, the soil becomes poor but soft

B. where there are many trees, there are more floods

C. where there are no trees, the land might slowly become desert

D. floods will make the land become desert

Where we live, on the Eastern shore of Maryland, the Canada geese as well as the white swans and the ducks come home for the winter.

One morning, a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside the huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Suddenly she cried out, “There is a goose out there.” We saw the figure of a large Canada goose with its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen to the ice.

Then from the dark skies, she saw a line of swans. They floated downward and finally landed on the ice. My friend was on her feet now, with one unbelieving hand against her mouth. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose, she feared what life he still had might be pecked (啄) out by those great swan bills (嘴). Instead, those bills began to work on the ice. The long necks were lifted and curved down, again and again. At last, the goose’s head lifted. Its body pulled. It was free and standing on the ice but still couldn’t fly. Then four of the swans chipped off the ice held in the feathers with powerful beaks. Slowly, the goose spread its wings as far as they would go, and moved slowly into the sky.

This is a true story from which comes only one hopeful question: If so for birds, why not for man?

46. What happened to the Canada goose?

A. It was deserted by other geese. B. It was stuck in the ice.

C. It was wounded and couldn’t fly. D. It was lost in the water.

47. At first the writer’s friend was worried that the ______.

A. swans would not help the Canada goose

B. swans would have the same fate with the Canada goose

C. Canada goose would not get on well with the swans

D. swans would peck the Canada goose to death

48. What did the swans do when they saw the Canada goose couldn’t fly?

A. They chipped off the ice held in its feathers.

B. They waited patiently for the ice held in its feathers to melt.

C. They lifted it up to the sky together.

D. They stayed with it and protected it.

49. What would probably happen to the writer’s friend in the end?

A. She stood there, watching attentively, still feeling a bit worried.

B. She was on her feet.

C. She was embarrassed and went on with her breakfast silently.

D. She stood there quietly, not realizing tears had run down her cheeks.
