Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-manners. Here are examples of the things that a well-educated person does or does not do.

If you visit Chinese family you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in, please.” After you enter the room, you should not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea table before you or sent to your hand, you will say, “Thank you.” And receive it with two hands, not one hand, or they will think you are ill-mannered.

Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a guest never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host, especially the hostess pleasant.

The cowboy has become the hero of many movies. He is, even today, believed to have courage and adventure(冒险). But what was the life of a cowboy really like?

The cowboy’s job is clear from the word “cowboy”. A cowboy, according to dictionary explanation, is a man who rides a horse and whose job is to care for cattle(牛). The cattle were in the West and in Texas. People in the cities of the East wanted beef(牛肉) from these cattle. Trains could take the cattle east. But first the cattle had to get to the trains. Part of the cowboy’s job was to take the cattle hundreds of miles to the railroad towns.

These trips were called cattle drives. A cattle drive usually took several months. Cowboys rode for sixteen hours a day. Because they rode so much, each cowboy brought along about eight horses. A cowboy changed horses several times each day.

The cowboys had to make sure that the cattle arrived safely. Before starting on a drive, the cowboys branded(给---烙上印) the cattle. They burned a mark on the cattle to show who they belonged to. But these marks didn’t stop rustlers(盗窃牲口的人), or cattle thieves. Cowboys had to protect the cattle from rustlers. Rustlers made the already dangerous trip even more dangerous.

Even though their work was very difficult and dangerous, cowboys did not earn much money. They were paid badly. But cowboys liked their way of life. They lived in a wild and open country. They lived a life of adventure and freedom.

Dara got off the school bus at her stop. She could see her house across the field. She started down the lane(巷) but stopped when she heard a sound coming from the bushes. Dara looked under the buses. There was a pretty little kitten(小猫). Dara reached under the bush, picked it up, and then ran toward her house. “What have you got?” Dara’s mother asked as Dara came into the kitchen.

“It’s a tiny, lost kitten,” Dara answered. “It’s hungry and frightened, but isn’t it cute(机灵的)? I think I’ll name it Bitsy.”

“We’ll feed the kitten,” Dara’s mother said, “but you’ll have to find it another home.”

“Why?” Dara cried.

“Your grandmother loves to watch the birds. They come to the feeder(进料器) by her window every day. Cats chase(追赶) birds, you know. It would make your grandmother very sad if Bitsy caught one of the birds,” said Dara’s mother.

I’ll think of something,” said Dara. I’ll figure out a way to keep both Bitsy and the birds.” Dara thought and thought. She wondered how cats could possibly catch birds. Dara could never get anywhere near the birds before they flew away. Then she remembered how quiet cats can be. Suddenly an idea came to her. The kitten had a big red ribbon(丝带) tied around its neck. A shiny silver bell hung from the ribbon. The bell would ring whenever Bitsy took a step.
