Fast food and too much TV time should not take all the blame for the weigh problems. A group of researchers say that a number of aspects of modern living from lack of sleep to environmental chemicals and to living with air conditioning—may be closely related to the weigh problems of many people.

Lack of sleep is one of factors. Researches in animals and humans suggest that a lack of sleep over a long time can increase appetite. Studies also show that many adults and children are sleeping less than they used to. In recent decades, adults have gone from sleeping for all average of nine hours to about seven hours.

There is also evidence that industrial chemicals may increase body fat. These chemicals, which are used in products, change hormonal activity when they get into the body. Studies suggest that people have been getting more and more of these chemicals through the food chain in recent decades.

Another factor that may be making people overweight is air conditioning. The body burns calories when forced to eat less in hot and wet weather, but air conditioning makes it unnecessary for the body to make any adjustment.

Researchers also list other possible risk factors for overweight, including more older mothers, whose children may become overweight more easily; a number of medicines which can lead to weight gain; and fewer people who smoke, since people often gain weight when they stop smoking because nicotine can make people eat less.

No one is suggesting that people should stop working and sleep more, or keep smoking. When it comes to saying any person’s weight, what really matters is how much they eat and how much of the food they use every day. That means diet and exercise are still the key.

Blood donation is a wonderful thing done by us. To begin with, extensive studies show that blood plays a vital role in medical operation. In donating our blood we are actually saving the precious lives of the sick. Next, being a healthy person, losing 200ml of blood is only a small sacrifice and helps to improve our metabolism(新陈代谢). Finally, donating blood helps us in forming good character and developing our sense of social responsibility. Blood donation isn't a complicated issue, but we need to keep a few instructions in mind.

First, don't go for blood donation with an empty stomach. We can eat anything and after having a right diet we'll feel strong and comfortable to donate blood. For the required hemoglobin (血色素) in the body, we can drink lots of fruit juice. For a good blood flow in the body, let's drink at least 6-7 glasses of water daily. Completely avoid taking alcohol or caffeine a day before and after donating our blood. We shouldn't smoke half an hour before making blood donation.

When we’re going for blood donation, first tell the nurse to check our hemoglobin level. During the injection we need to take a deep breath and try to calm ourselves down . During blood donation, keep ourselves cool and calm.

Blood donation is a very fast process, but we need to take care of ourselves after blood donation. For example, take a rest for 15 minutes after the donation. Eat something and drink juice leaving the blood donation centre. Make sure not to skip meals after blood donation .Smoking should be avoided up to one hour after blood donation.

At last be proud of ourselves that we've done a great task in making an attempt of saving someone's life. Blood donation is a social responsibility for every citizen, especially for us, young students. We should do it voluntarily not because it does us no harm but because it is a noble thing to do and it helps others a great deal

Look closely at your hands--are they clean? It doesn't matter how many times you wash your hands, they're still crowded with microbes, which are also called "germs" or "bacteria". Microbes are everywhere. But don't worry--most microbes don't harm you, and many actually help you stay alive.

Now, scientists say the microbes that live on our hands could be useful in a surprising way: fighting crime.

When police visit the scene of a crime, they often look for fingerprints to try to identify the criminal. But according to a recent study, investigators could even use microbes to help break a criminal case.

Every person has his or her own set of microbes that live on their hands, according to scientists at the University of Colorado. That means the mix of different kinds of microbes on everybody's hand is unique -- much like one's fingerprint.

The scientists wanted to know whether this microbe mix could be used as a new kind of fingerprint -- especially in a crime scene where fingerprints might be hard to find. And policemen use forensics such as studying fingerprints to identify the criminal.

“Microbe fingerprints are harder to hide,” said Noah Fierer, one of the scientists. “You can't sterilize a surface just by wiping it off.”

His team compared the bacteria on the hands of 273 people to the bacteria found on each person's computer keyboard. For the study, the keyboards had been used only by the people who were being tested. The study showed that the mix of microbes from each person's hands matched the mix of microbes on that person's keyboard. The scientists were easily able to tell the 273 people apart -- just by looking at their keyboards.

But there are a lot more than 273 criminals. Other scientists wonder whether the microbe fingerprint can really be that useful.

Fierer agrees that scientists have a lot more work to do before the microbe fingerprint will be a useful tool.

It is understandable that many of today’s college graduates view themselves as the generation that opportunity forgot.

This fall, I interviewed 85 recent graduates of various colleges to discuss their success in finding a job. Of those I interviewed---many from famous schools ---only five are in the career fields they prepared for; the rest are unemployed or in jobs that are temporary. Graduates with once-marketable degrees in accounting and computer science, for example, now compete with applicants who have five years of experience and will accept the same entry-level salary.

Mainly because there are too many applicants for too few jobs, employers are ignoring resumes that once commanded interviews. But in my work as a management consultant, I find that many executives also feel that recent graduates have contributed to a problem: that young people have been so pampered (纵容) by their parents and are so untested academically that they bring little value to today’s demanding workplace.

Some of the least judgmental, most supportive managers I know are criticizing recent graduates for poor quality in their written and oral reports, and for difficulty in drawing essential facts from masses of data. Earlier generations faced this criticism as well, but employees flooded with resumes have now become far more selective than their predecessors (前人).

Among all the cruel talks about unemployment, little is said about the impact on the nation’s future of a generation convinced that the workplace has little use for it. This generation must regain its confidence if they are to remain the birthplace of ideas, products and services that shape world.

The quickest way to rebuild that confidence is to form partnerships between recent graduates and the companies that will employ them.

Corporations, in turn, should consider investing in training and developing a generation they will eventually need. High-potential graduates for whom there isn’t an immediate opening could be hired, not as unpaid interns(实习生) but as salaried trainees given three to six months to prove their value in a series of assignments. Those who don’t seize the opportunity can quickly be dismissed. Trainees should be given guidance to help them avoid the small missteps that can damage a career before it starts.

61. Why do today’s college graduates consider themselves as being forgotten by opportunity?

A. There are fewer jobs than they expected.

B. Many of them are not employed or in steady jobs that they want.

C. They are not as confident as the previous graduates.

  D. They don’t know how to seize opportunities.

62. What is the attitude of the employers towards so many resumes?

  A. Careful B. Favored C. Positive D. Ignoring.

63. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?

  A. College graduates bring no value to a demanding workplace because of their lack of experience.

  B. The young generation can be the birthplace of ideas, products and services that shape the world.

  C. Graduates with higher degrees are more competent than those who have rich work experience.

  D. Most high-potential graduates can immediately bring benefit to companies.

64. What is the quickest way that recent graduates can deal with their awkward condition?

  A. Form partnerships between recent graduates and the companies.

  B. Act as mentors for the older generation in order to improve their abilities.

  C. Ask their managers more questions and learn more from them.

  D. Make every effort to get training and practice.

65. What should corporations do to help graduates in their careers?

  A. Dismiss them if they find graduates incompetent.

  B. Hire them as unpaid or low-paid interns.

  C. Invest in training and develop their potential.

  D. Persuade the older generation to tolerate their missteps.

A light drizzle was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the Methodist Church, eager to get home and play with the presents that Santa had left for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the church was a Pan American gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped. It was closed for Christmas, but I noticed a family standing outside the locked door, huddled under the narrow overhang(屋檐) in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.

Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents' house for our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town,I noticed that the family were still there, standing outside the closed gas station.

My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff for my grandparents' house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned in the middle of the road and said, ‘‘I can't stand it!” ‘‘What?” asked my mother. ‘‘They've got children. It's Christmas. I can’t stand it.” When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy. My father rolled down his window. “Merry Christmas,” he said.

“Howdy ,’’the man replied.

‘‘You are waiting for the bus?’’ my father asked.

The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and prospects of a job.

“Well, that bus isn't going to come along for several hours, and you're getting wet standing here. Winborn is just a couple miles up the road. They've got a shed with a cover there and some benches”. My father said. ‘‘Why don't you all get in the car and I'll run you up there.”

The man thought about it for a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing.

Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three gloomy(郁闷的)faces gave him his answer.

“Well I didn't think so,” my father said, winking at my mother,“because when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go to get them before I take you to the bus stop.”

All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering.

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were spread out under our Christmas tree. One of the girls spied Jill's doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. I remember that the little boy grabbed Sharon's ball. And the other girl picked up something of mine.

All this happened a long time ago, but the memory of it remains clear. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy.
