根据短文内容,从下框A~F选项中选出能概括每段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余项。

A. How to take notes and rewrite in one`s own words

B. Advantages of taking notes

C. Taking some useful notes

D. Taking notes is a help to create new ideas in the future

E. Need to change information from an encyclopedia into one` s own

F. Two ways of writing a note and their advantage

61.

In school and out, many people need to put the information they find in an encyclopedia into words of their own. The student who is writing a composition, the businessman who is writing a report, and the housewife who is preparing a talk for a woman` s club often need the kind of information they find in an encyclopedia. But no one wants what he writes to read as it were copied from an encyclopedia. What you write should read as if it came from you.

62.

Even if you have every intention of rewriting the material in your own words, it is unwise to copy information from an encyclopedia word for word. Instead, write brief notes to remind yourself of the facts you wish to express. Later with the encyclopedia closed, you can expand those notes into sentences and paragraph of your own.

63.

The advantage of note-taking over copying is that it forces you to think for yourself at least twice-first when you are reading and second when you are using your notes. It is easy to copy a paragraph without being sure of what it means. But to make a note expressing the meaning of a paragraph in your own words requires you to prove to yourself that you have understood that paragraph. Note-taking also helps you to remember what you have read. It is much easier to remember what you have said in a note that someone else has said in a book. Even if author` s vocabulary is easily understood, it isn` t the vocabulary you naturally think of. Putting his ideas into your vocabulary makes those ideas yours, and yours are the ideas you best remember.

64.

Some people write notes in complete sentences. Others write notes that are phrases of topics. For example, a sentence note on the paragraph above might be “Notes help you remember.” A topical note for the same paragraph might be “Notes as memory helps”. Both of these are four-word notes, and therefore either has an advantage to save time at the moment of note-taking

65.

Remember that the purpose of taking notes is always for some future use, often for some future writing that you will do. Notes that make you think as you write are better than notes that merely help you remember information. The thinking writer is the one who creates something new, something that no one can point to and say, “Oh, I have seen that same paragraph in an encyclopedia.”

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper---a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives(蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for curious animals or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

58. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest?

A. It’s small in size.                   B. It’s hidden in trees.

C. It’s covered with wax.               D. It’s hard to recognize.

59. What do the words “the follower” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. A bee       B. A bird        C. A honey seeker.    D. A beekeeper.

60. The honey guide is special in the way_____________.

A. it gets its food                             B. it goes to church

Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “we’re kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.

So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don’t just mean the words people speak. It is the body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.

Some of these differences may be only on the surface—dress, food and hours of work—while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate, while getting on with business.

Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality(准时). If you invite people to a party at 7 o’clock your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to  an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.

50. The author was unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1 because he thought________.

A. the American bank didn’t think much of him

B. the American bank might hire another person

C. it’s difficult to get used to American culture

D. it’s easy to misunderstand Americans

51. The word “highlight” in Paragraph 2 probably means____________.

A. encourages  B. helps to narrow     C. increases    D. draws attention to

52. According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences?

A. Ask the native people for help

B. Understand and accept them

C. Do things in your own way

D. Do in-depth research

53. When invited to a party the people who are usually punctual are__________.

A. Italians       B. Germans       C. Greeks        D. The British

They are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch them.

They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett ,an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2, 000-foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes(路线).

During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes(尖状物) that guided the ropes and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again inch by inch, for 13 days.

Wellman’s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone. In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.

However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing, “He knew that was how I got injured”, Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.

Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave away, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.

“Your partner can save your life---you can save your partner’s life.” Wellman said as the pair received congratulations from friends. “There are real close ties.”

A. To climb up to remove the spikes.

B. To climb it twice.

C. To do 5,000 pull-ups up the rope.

D. To lock the rope in place.

47. Why did the two men never talk about climbing when they first met?

A. Corbett was poorly trained.

B. Wellman had lost interest in climbing.

C. Corbett didn’t want to hurt Wellman.

D. Wellman hadn’t decided whether to climb again.

48. What do we know about Wellman?

A. He climbed Half Dome by himself.

B. He was disabled in a traffic accident.

C. He stopped rock-climbing for some time.

D. He was saved by Corbett during the climb.

49. The main idea of the text is that____________.
