First I bought an ice-cream maker making of steel. Between the outside and the inside wall of the bowl there is some jelly, which freeze when cooled. I put the bowl into the fridge. Then in the evening I placed a frozen bowl in the snakes’ habitat and some ice cubes on top of the bowl to keep cool. Finally I covered the whole thing with a large bucket. The next morning when I removed the bucket or the bowl, I found the snakes very sleepily. I collected the passive snakes using a net and released it all back into the wild.

The British summer is extremely beautiful. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this picturesque scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them?

Butterfly Conservation, a charity in the UK, is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected. According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in Britain, more than three quarters of them are suffering a declining population, including the most popular ones. What’s more, half of all butterfly species are in the danger of dying out. Some common species such as the small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the Wall butterfly are dropping dramatically. The latter cannot even be seen in many parts of central and southern England. The Blue butterfly was commonly seen in the south. However, it has started colonizing(迁徙至)Edinburgh in the past few years. 

The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a record low in the past three years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler and their habitat is also worsening. Fortunately Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year compared to the last few summers. Conservationists believe the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies.

Sir David Attenborough, president of Butterfly Conservation, said: “Large quantities of butterflies tell us that all is well with nature. When they decline it’s a warning that other wildlife will be soon _______ .”

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.

　 The shoes- named Square Eyes- contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day’s efforts.

　 The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. “We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says. “And I wanted to tackle that with my design.”

　 Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.

Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.

These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device of such product. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.

Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. The result they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.

To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food Drug Administration) can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure (查封) of the product.

One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.

Gallery Policies

for Visitors to National Gallery of Art, Washington

Visitors must present all carried items for inspection upon entry. After inspection, all bags, backpacks, umbrellas, parcels, and other things as determined by security officers must be left at the checkrooms, free of charge, close to each entrance. All oversized bags, backpacks and luggage must be left at the checkrooms near the 4^th Street entrance of either the East or West Building. These items will have to be x-rayed before being accepted items of value, such as laptop computers, cameras, and fur coats, may not be left in the checkrooms but may be carried into the galleries.

We regret that we do not have enough space for visitor items larger than 17×26 inches into the Gallery or its checkrooms.

Additional security procedures and checks may be taken according to the decision of the Gallery.

For the safety of the artworks and other visitors, nothing may be carried on a visitor’s back. Soft front baby carriers are allowed, but children may not be carried on shoulders or in a child carrier worn on the back. Pushchairs are available free of charge near each checkroom.

Smoking is prohibited. Food and drink are not permitted outside the food service areas. Unopened bottled water may be carried only in a visitor’s bag. Cell phones may not be used in the galleries.

Animals, other than service animals, are not permitted in the Gallery.

Skateboarding is prohibited.

Picture-taking including video for personal use is permitted except in special exhibitions and where specifically prohibited. Tripods (三角架) are not allowed.
