Should parents consider any real value in kid humor? And should the sounds of armpit farts(咯吱打响) be encouraged?

“Absolutely. Not during a math test, necessarily, but there are too many places in our world right now where children have to be serious,” said Ed Dunkelblau, a psychologist. “We forget that humor, laughter and play are important to our existence.”

“Kids learn to build relationships through humor and laughter,” said Ed Dunkelblau. “There are ways to play and be humorous that don’t cost anybody self-esteem.”

Research shows that children respond to humor long before they can fully understand language or develop long-term memory.

Two top funny guys from American Greetings, Pat Sandy and Brain Cleary, see kid humor as a victory of language and one of the earliest acts of defiance(违抗), both of which should be celebrated as necessary and healthy.

“We do the same thing as grown-ups. We show off our vocabularies,” said Cleary. Sandy said parents should consider a good sense of humor a benefit to their children. “A kid who is really good at humor shows a sign of intelligence at an early age,” he said. “Armpit farts show an ability to take incongruent(不一致的) devices and bring them together.”

Social worker Devra Renner said parents tend to forget what made them laugh—and how good it felt—when they were young.

“Consider how many times you have heard a parent ask a laughing child, ‘What’s so funny’” said Renner. “But if we give up the adult definition of what‘fun’is and remember what was fun when we were kids, I think many parents would be amazed at their newfound ability to once again discover just what it is that’s so funny.”

67. What’s Dunkelblau’s attitude towards kid humor?

  A. Disapproving. B. Critical. C. Skeptical. D. Supportive.

68. In the opinion of Sandy, kid humor _______.

  A. shows children are creative

  B. helps children develop a good memory at an early age

  C. reflects children’s desire to show off their intelligence

  D. is a kind of way to show off kids’ big vocabularies

69. According to Renner, what can we know?

  A. Parents usually know how to make their kids laugh.

  B. Parents sometimes can’t understand kid humor.

  C. Parents can discover fun from what makes kids laugh.

  D. Parents tend to tell their funny stories from childhood to their kids.

70. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to ______.

  A. encourage parents to teach kids how to be humorous

  B. remind kids to avoid being hurt by bad humor

  C. expect parents to realize the importance of kid humor

  D. explain what humor brings to parents and kids

In order to understand human beings, it is necessary to think of them as part of the whole living world. Our vital humanity depends not only on the complex biological structure which has been developed through the ages from very simple beginnings, but also upon the great social inventions which have been made by human beings, continued by human beings, and in turn give human beings their reputation as builders, thinkers, statesmen, artists and prophets(预言家).

No doubt each of these great inventions—language, the family, the use of tools, government, science, art, and philosophy—has the quality of so combining the potentialities of every human nature, and each can be learned and continued by any group of human beings, regardless of race and the type of civilization within which their progenitors lived; therefore, a newborn baby from the most primitive tribe in New Guinea is as basically capable of graduation from Harvard, or writing a sonnet(十四行诗), or inventing a new form of radar as a baby born on Beacon Hill.

However, it is also believed that once a child has been brought up in New Guinea, Boston, Leningrad or Tibet, he symbolizes the culture within which he is raised, and differs from those who are raised elsewhere so deeply, and that only by understanding these differences can we reach an awareness which will give us a new control over our human destiny(命运).

So believably human nature is naturally neither good nor evil, but human beings are born with different combinations of inborn potentialities, and it will depend upon how they are brought up—to trust and love and experiment and create, or to fear and hate and obey—and what kind of human beings they can become. We have not even begun to develop human potentialities, and by continuing modest but continual study of human behavior, we can learn intentionally to create civilizations within which an increasing percentage of human beings will realize more of what they have it in them to be.

Without any doubt, human life is given meaning through the relationship which the human being’s conscious goals have to the civilization, period, and the country in which one lives.

At times, the task may be to fence a wilderness, to bridge a river, or to bring up sons to continue a young group. Today, it means that we should take upon the task of creating one world in such a way that we both keep the future safe and leave the future free.

63. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

   A. An understanding of human culture.             B. A great invention of mankind.

   C. Neither good nor evil.                                 D. A new control of human destiny.

64. The underlined word “progenitors” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “_______”.

   A. designers              B. organizers               C. ancestors                 D. discovers

65. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. Humanity depends on the social inventions as well as the biological structure.

   B. Human inventions combine its potentialities with race and civilization.

   C. Human nature is either good or evil at birth.

   D. Human life has meaning because of the person’s conscious goals.

66. According to Paragraph 2, great human inventions include the following EXCEPT _______.

   A. the quality of so combining the potentialities of every human nature

   B. human race and civilization within which their progenitors lived

   C. the ones that can be learned and continued by any group of human beings

   D. language, the family, the use of tools, government, science, art and philosophy

When Liz Elting, 44, one of the owners of TransPerfect, a translation company, started her business 18 years ago with Phil Shawe, both were attending New York University’s Stern School of business. They never realized just how many situations would require their services, “We have translated black box data after planes crashed,” says Elting. “Translating Hooked on Phonics into eight languages was especially challenging because we were doing sounds, not words!”

Elting had once worked for a translation company and she knew how important it was to get things right—like the instructions for medical devices. Ad companies, too, needed accurate translations that took cultural differences into account. She and Shawe were certain that if they delivered a quick, reliable service, they could build an international business that would stand out.

They started their business in Shawe’s dormitory room. While Shawe finished his MBA, Elting employed some linguists(语言学家) and made hundreds of cold calls seeking clients(客户). One of their first jobs was to translate an 800-page study research of a Russian gold mine in 30 days. Once the partners were out of survival mode, they hired people to help grow the company and told them to run their area as if it were their own business. “If they did well,” says Elting, “they owned that success.”

Elting and Shawe paid themselves $9,000 a year each. Their ambition, however, at times threatened the company’s growth. In 2008, a client promised $15 million in business— more than double their earnings. They opened an office in Miami, but when the Internet suffered its burst, says Shawe, “the client pulled out. Today we get money up front; we share risk. Commonsense things.”

TransPerfect’s 4,000 linguists cover more than 100 languages. Last year, the company had earnings of $225 million; the average annual growth rate is 30 percent. Elting and Shawe still work together. “Phil is good at developing systems and creative sales ideas,” says Elting. “I focus on operations and making sure that our clients are happy.”

With more than 1,100 employees, and offices in 57 cities in 18 countries on four continents, they still focus on the details. They keep an exact list of client preferences: soda or soft drink, sofa or couch. Even now, at the top of the world’s largest privately held language company, Elting refuses to be complacent and would prefer a slightly different translation: “We want to be the world’s premier language company.”

59. From the first two paragraphs, we can infer that TransPerfect _______.

  A. prefers accuracy to speed

B. has a broader range of clients

  C. specializes in translating difficult documents

  D. thinks highly of clients’ special requirements

60. The underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably means Elting and Shawe ______.

  A. couldn’t solve the survival problem of their company

  B. needn’t worry about the survival of their company

  C. went out to seek new clients for their company’s survival

  D. didn’t know which survival mode was fit for their company

61. According to the passage, Elting and Shawe get along well in their business because they _______.

  A. trust each other in business

B. share the same ambition and goal

  C. complement(补充) each other in business

D. are both responsible for their common business

62. The underlined word “complacent” in the last paragraph means _______.

  A. proud B. stubborn C. self-critical D. self-satisfied

The 2011 runner- up Li Na swept second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-2 to reach her second Australian Open final here on Thursday, January 24, 2013.

The China's top player reached her first Grand Slam(大满贯) final at the Melbourne Park in 2011 but lost to Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the final, just before she won Asia's first Grand Slam title in the French Open.

“I'm very happy now. Not so many players can reach the Grand Slam finals three times,” said Li. “I insisted and I made back to this stage. It's something worth to be proud of.”

Sharapova, who only lost a historical tournament-low nine games in her previous five matches, struggled with her serve(发球) from the very beginning of the match. She double faulted twice in her first serve game, allowing Li to break her in the first game.

Li held to lead 2-0 and then broke again for 4-1 with a cross-court return. Sharapova fought her way to three break points in the sixth game and secured the chance when Li missed a return. Li returned the favour in the following game to lead 5-2. The No.6 seed served for the set, racing to 40-0 and wrapped the first set up in 48 minutes.

Li took the first service break in the second set to remain on track with a 3-2 lead, grabbed a second at 5-2 and served out the match. Sharapova saved one match point but Li made an ACE to take advantage again and didn't waste the second chance.

“In the beginning of the match I was nervous. I was happy I come back to semis again, but for some reasons I really want to win the match,” said Li.

“Li played a really great match. She was certainly much more aggressive than I was and I was always on the defense,” said Sharapova. “I was making too many unforced errors.”

The straight-set victory improved Li's record against Sharapova to 5-8. The pair met three times in 2012 and the Russian won all of the clashes.

Li Na will play against defending champion Victoria Azarenka who defeated 19-year-old American Sloane Stephens in the other semifinal later on Thursday.

“2011 is the first time for me to a Grand Slam final. I was a little bit shocked because I didn't know what I should do. No one tell me what I should do on the court,” said Li. “But this time I got more experience, so I think it should be better.”

Losing to Clijsters in her first Grand Slam final made Li Na hungry. “That's the first time I was feeling I was really close to the title. I think this time should be a different story.”

55. What might be the best title of the passage?

  A. Li Na won Asia's first Grand Slam title.

B. Li Na reached Australian Open final again.

  C. Azarenka defeated Sloane Stephens in the semifinal.

  D. Li Na won her second Grand Slam title.

56. How many times has Li Na defeated Sharapova so far according to the passage?

  A. Three. B. Five. C. Eight. D. Thirteen.

57. Who is the winner of the 2012 Australia Open final?

  A. Victoria Azarenka. B. Maria Sharapova. C. Li Na. D. Kim Clijsters.

58. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?

A. After the tough match, Li Na was hungry.

B. Li Na was angry because she lost the match.

  C. Li Na was hungry because she only had some fruits for breakfast.

  D. Li Na was eager to win the Australian Open final because of losing to Clijsters in 2011.

The Panama Canal opened almost 100 years ago. More than one million ships have passed through waterway since 1914. It connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and reduces travel by about 13,000 kilometers and avoids the need for ships to sail around Cape Horn at the bottom of South America.

Built from 1904 to 1914, the canal has seen annual traffic rise from about 1,000 ships early on to 14,702 ships in 2008. In total, over 815,000 ships have passed through the canal. It has been named one of the seven modern wonders of the world. More than forty ships pass through the canal each day.

Now, a major expansion project will permit more ships and bigger ships to pass through the canal. Jorge Quijano, the Panama Canal’s executive vice president of engineering, says, “the Canal is operating at its limit. The present canal has a total capacity of about 340 million tons a year that it can handle. With the expansion we expect to double that, over 600 million tons that we can handle in a year.”

Ships pass through a series of locks. These locks raise a ship to the level of Gatun Lake at the canal entrance on the Atlantic side. They lower the ship back to sea level on the Pacific side. For years, shipbuilders limited the size of many ships so that they could pass through the Panama Canal. But now many shipping companies use bigger ships to transport more goods as a way to reduce costs. Mr. Quijano says the expansion project will allow many of these larger ships to use the canal.

Workers are building the new locks alongside the old ones, which will remain in use. The existing locks are 305 meters long and 55 meters wide. The new ones will be 427 meters long and 55 meters wide. They will be able to handle ships with drafts(吃水量) of more than 15 meters. At present, ships can ride only 12 meters deep in the cannel.

Engineers could not make the new locks too big. Mr. Quijano says the plans had to balance the size of the locks with the cost for ships to use the canal. “We had to look at the optimal size of vessel that would make the return on the investment of a high value to us. So we chose what size of vessels that could actually pay for this project.” Mr. Quijano said.

The cost of the expansion is estimated at more than five billion dollars. The new locks are set to open in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal.

51. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that the Panama Canal _______.

  A. was built close to Cape Horn

B. took a decade to be completed

  C. now sees a daily traffic of about 400 ships

D. is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world

52. After the expansion of the Panama Canal, ________.

  A. there will be no limitation to the size of ships through it

  B. it will have a total capacity of 500 million tons a year

  C. the cost of transporting goods will be relatively low

  D. the charge of using the canal will be reduced

53. What do we know about the new locks?

  A. They will be put to use in 2014.

  B. They will take the place of the old ones.

  C. Their length will be double that of the old ones.

  D. Ships with drafts of 50 meters can pass through them.

54. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?

  A. To introduce the history of the Panama Canal.

  B. To show the importance of the Panama Canal.

  C. To report the expansion project of the Panama Canal.

  D. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Panama Canal.
