Ever tried taking smart drugs to perform better in exams? They

certainly work．Before last summer's exam, a few of my mates, merely

out of curiosity, took a considerable amount of Modafinil, a drug nor-

mally used for narcolepsy（嗜眠发作症）.Guess what? While I was

feeling sleepy, bored by revision, my mates were more focused．

Modafinil is a smart drug that gives a user a feeling of staying awake for hours．It also sharpens the mind, improves memory and helps problem-solving．

But it does more than just keeping you awake．It disturbs your mental system, making you desperate to do what you are doing．You just don't want to do anything else but revise all the time non-stop．

A recent study discovers that healthy people use smart drugs, like Modafinil, to get down to and complete tasks they have been putting off, because these tasks seem more enjoyable when taking these drugs. This might sound like what a stressed student desires. However, the pills have a range of side-effects.

"At present no evidence shows that these drugs are safe in healthy people," as a medical expert puts it, "Ordering online, though easy, is a dangerous way to obtain drugs. You never know what you're actually purchasing. "

In my experience, Modafinil changes people's behaviour too. Over those weeks my friends　 became different people-in turn aggressive, cold. Even eating became "a waste of time" and sodid conversation.

A BBC survey found that of those who had tried smart drugs before, 92% would do so again. My friends say they'd happily do so without considering the practice a form of cheating.

I admit I was curious-but not enough to try it. Seeing the strange behaviour of other users, I feel a little bit upset and scary. Modafinil may promise to change your grades, but it might also change the way you act. Don't say you haven't been warned!

Umbrella is a “difficult” novel. But if you enjoy challenges, just read on because Umbrella, as a Booker Prize winner, is one you can’t miss.

The story itself is not difficult to follow. It concerns a woman named Audrey, a Lo  ndoner who grows up during World War I, works in a military factory, and then survives an epidemic （传染病）spreading through Europe between 1915 and 1926. She is admitted to a mental hospital in 1922, and remains there, mind out of time, until 1971, when a doctor named Zach Busner awakens the sleeping beauty with a special drug. And decades later-on April 8,2010, to be exact — Busner

thinks back on all this as he visits his old hospital.

The story also involves painful facts of how the mentally ill were

mistreated, and the careers of Audrey’s two brothers, one of whom

becomes a soldier in the Great War. Fans of World War I will not want

to miss the vivid descriptions of battlefields.

What makes Will Self’s novel challenging is how he tells his story.

Is opens in the spring of 1971 but thereafter time travels back and

forth between Audrey’s Edwardian childhood and 2010, jumping

mid-sentence from one era to another with no reminders to guide the reader. It is a new style many many modernists adopted, who thought that the old ways were not enough to show the great changes at the beginning of the 20th century.

This story isn’t new: Oliver Sacks dealt with the same sleeping sickness and its treatment in Awakenings. What’s appealing about Umbrella is that Self combines from with content perfectly, using modernist techniques. The readers may feel confused about the switch of time, it’s Self’s wild style that offers other delights – richly detailed settings that bring mental hospitals alive and much more than that.

Yes, “Umbrella” is a “difficult” novel, but it amply rewards the effort.

The New Folk Sound Of Terry Collier attracted little interest when first released （发行） , and by the time it was championed on a music chart, Callier had long abandoned music for a career in computer programming．As a result, he returned to music to make many recordings with some leading young artists in Britain, making it the most successful period of his life．

Terry Callier was born into a poor family on May 24, 1945 and grew up in Chicago．He learned to practice the piano and began singing in groups in his teens．He released his first single, Look At Me Now in 1962．When offered a tour, he seemed to be a shining star soon．But then his mother stepped in, insisting that, at 17 , his place was not on the road but at home studying．
