We live in central Phoenix, near the canal. Every day I used to see a homeless old man and his scruffy little dog hanging out down there.

I would tell my husband we should give him food for the little dog. It wouldn't have been a problem; we have our own "mini farm" of animals! But he would say "OK!" and then blow the idea off because of our business.

Being in Phoenix, Arizona, you can just imagine how hot it gets here, but his winter was really chilly! I had just come from KFC with take-out food for dinner. As I was turning by the canal, the man and his dog were sitting right there all bundled up. Even the doggy had a coat on! Not even thinking about it, I pulled into the parking lot along the canal and piled up a plate of chicken with al the fixings for the man and his little buddy. With tears in eyes, he said it had gotten too hard for him to care for the dog. He added that he was planning on heading to Washington State but his dog wouldn't have been up to it, so he hoped to give it to me. "Only you! It turns out that nodding off in class may not be such a bad idea after all, as a new study has shown that going to sleep shortly after learning new material is the best way to remember it.

According to the leader of the study, Jessica Payne, a psychologist at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, nodding off after learning something new is like “telling” the sleeping brain what to keep.

Along with her colleagues, she studied 207 students who habitually slept for at least six hours per night. Participants were assigned without any regular pattern to study declarative (陈述性的), semantically (语义上) related or unrelated word pairs at 9 a.m. or 9 p.m., and returned for testing 30 minutes, 12 hours or 24 hours later.

Declarative memory refers to the ability to consciously remember facts and events, and can be broken down into memory for events and memory for facts about the world. People use both types of memory every day --- recalling where we parked today or learning how a colleague prefers to be addressed.

At the 12-hour retest, memory overall was better following a night of sleep compared to a day of wakefulness.At the 24-hour retest, with all participants having received both a full night of sleep and a full day of wakefulness, participants’ memories were better when sleep occurred shortly after learning, rather than following a full day of wakefulness.

“Our study confirms that sleeping directly after learning something new is beneficial for memory. What's new about this study is that we tried to shine light on sleep's influence on both types of declarative memory by studying semantically unrelated and related word pairs,” Payne said.

“Since we found that sleeping soon after learning benefited both types of memory, this means that it would be a good thing to go over any information you need to remember just before going to bed. In some sense, you may be “telling” the sleeping brain what to consolidate (巩固).”

       A person who compares the annual earnings of college and high school graduates would no doubt conclude that higher education is a good investment—the present value of the college earnings premium (奖金) (the better part of $1 million) seemingly far outdistances (超过) college costs. But for many, attending college is unequivocally (明确地) not the right decision on purely economic reasons.

As a consequence, we have a new phenomenon: underemployed college graduates doing jobs historically performed by those with much less education.

Does this mean no one should go to college? Of course not. First of all, college is more than training for a career, and many might benefit from the social aspects of advanced schooling.

　　 Most people only tap (发掘) a small part of their potential. You do what you CAN do, but are you doing what you COULD do? Most people do what they CAN do, but not what they COULD do.        Olympic champion Carl Lewis begins the 34^th annual Hershey's (好时巧克力公司)Track and Field Games. Nine-time gold medalist Carl Lewis has teamed up with Hershey’s for the 34^th annual Hershey's Track and Field Games. The goal of the Games, which take place in 4,000 communities throughout North America, is to promote physical fitness and sportsmanship in kids aged 9 to 14.
