If women are mercilessly exploited(剥削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame, because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion. They are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed with clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.

Changing fashion is nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way waste hours of their time altering the dresses they have. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability(耐用). They’re only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t sometime in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high-heeled shoes.

When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Does the constantly changing fashion of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of instability(不稳定)? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanged styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

64. Designers and big stores always make money ______.

   A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry

  B. because they are capable of predicting the new fashion

   C. by constantly changing the fashion in women’s clothing

   D. because they always improve the quality of women’s clothing

   C. an expression of taste             D. an expression of creativity,

66. The writer would be less critical if fashion designers placed more stress on the _____ of clothing.

    A. cost        B. appearance       C. comfort      D. suitability

67. By saying "the conclusions to be drawn are obvious”, the writer means that __________.

   A. women’s changeableness in their choice of clothing was often laughed at

   B. women are better able to put up with discomfort

   C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers

   D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion

We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it’s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing in on human beings. “Most of the infections (感染) we think of as human infections started in other animals,” says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. It’s not just that we’re going to where the animals are; we’re also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isakson’s pets and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. “ I don’t think it’s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them, “says Isakson.

“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,” says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug(病毒)may be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful. Monkey-pox doesn’t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person

When Andrew was preparing for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous as he thought about the upcoming showdown(摊牌). What if Mr. Larchmont refused his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and succeeded in winning a contract which was difficult to get for Barer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he should get a salary raise.

The thought of walking into Mr. Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally brave enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal(一贯节省的) Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that evening----despite breaking all city and state speed limits----to a beautiful table. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured out someone from the office had told her the news.

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations,my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina Was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he noticed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you how much I love you though you did not get the increase.”

Suddenly tears welled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.
