What Women Know About Leadership that Men Don’t

An effective modern leader requires a combination of intellectual qualities — the ability to think analytically, strategically and creatively — and emotional ones, including self-awareness, empathy and humility(谦逊). In short, great leadership begins with being a complete human being.

I meet far more women with these qualities than men, and especially when it comes to emotional and social intelligence. While, the vast majority of CEOs and senior executives I’ve met over the past decade have been men with limitations. Most of them resist introspection(反思), feel more comfortable measuring outcomes than they do managing emotions, and under-appreciate the powerful connection between how people feel and how they perform.

I’m not suggesting that gender ensures or precludes(妨碍)any specific qualities. For the most part, however, women, more than men, bring to leadership a more complete range of the qualities that modern leaders need, including self-awareness, emotional attunement(协调) and humility.

That’s not just my own view. In one study of 2,250 adults conducted by the PEW center, women were rated higher on a range of leadership qualities, including honesty, intelligence, diligence and creativity.

For all that, women still hold only 14 percent of senior executive positions in Fortune 500 companies. So why do women remain so vastly underrepresented at the highest levels of large companies?

There are many answers, including the fact that even the most educated women typically take the primary role in raising their children, and are far more likely than men to scale back their careers and ambitions, or even leave the workforce altogether.

Perhaps the key explanation is that men commonly bring more of one key quality to the competition for senior leadership roles: aggression, which comes from Latin, meaning stepping before or in front of someone. From an early age, men often overvalue their strengths, while women too frequently underrate theirs. In reality, we all struggle to feel a stable sense of value and self-worth. Men often defend against their doubts by moving to inflation(自命不凡), while women more frequently move to insecurity.

But the leadership skills needed to be successful today are far more multi-dimensional than ever before.

Instead, we need more male leaders with the courage to stand down, comfortably acknowledge their shortcomings, and help their staff feel safe and appreciated, rather than fearful and inadequate. We need more women with the courage to step up, fully own their strengths, and lead with confidence and determination while also holding on to their humanity and humility.

We need a new generation of leaders — men and women —who willingly embrace their opposites.

How can something that represents nothing in particular be so eye-catching to look at? If you have once said, "That is easy to paint... Who would pay that significant amount of money for something that doesn't even relate to anything?", then chances are that you do not appreciate what Abstract Art really is. When looking at Abstract Art, you are seeing the most freely formed type of artwork an artist can create.

____1____. You would think that when looking at art that is non-representational, it would be less interesting to view as you do not know what the artist is truly trying to depict in his or her artwork.

____2_____. This type of art is meant to grab your attention and pull an emotional response right from within you. Once you see that part of the painting...the part that keeps you drawn in and your mind thinking, it is then when you know you are analyzing something special...something called Abstract Art.

____3____. So what grabs your attention when seeing this particular piece of art? Well let's think...what gets your attention in any circumstance? Why is a stop sign bright red? That's right...Abstract Art, in most circumstances, is filled with colors of all sorts that are meant to turn heads. These characteristics, along with others such as the paintings texture and other elements, are what make this form of art one of the most popular styles collected today. The creativity involved with these pieces of art brings upon a new imagination that some viewers didn't know existed within them. This art is from the heart and soul, instead of what you see is what you get. With that being said, you can now see that Abstract Art is more than just a thoughtless mess put on a canvas.

____4____. While viewing the work of a very talented artist, Osnat Tzadok, I came across a quote of hers that states "Every time I pass near a blank canvas I feel something explode inside of me. It is not something I can explain or pass on to someone else...but it is, always, a beginning of a new creation". This quote of Osnat's perfectly portrays what we, the viewers, should feel when viewing an artist's abstract creation. Just as an artist gets this "explosion" that Osnat speaks of, we receive the same feeling when looking at their piece if we truly appreciate Abstract Art. The beauty of non-representational art is that we can create the story within the painting. We can ask ourselves, "Why do these colors interact with each other?" or "What does this symbolize?".... and with those questions our imagination brings about answers.

67. From the passage, we can know that____________.

   A. it is easy to paint Abstract Art for the author

   B. nobody wants to pay money for Abstract Art in Europe.

   C. it would not be interesting to appreciate art that is non-representational

   D. you can see the formed type of artwork an artist can create

68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. The beauty of non-representational art is that we can tell the history of the painting.     B. In most cases, Abstract Art is filled with colors of all sorts that are meant to turn heads.

   C. When watching Abstract Art, you will see the least freely formed type of artwork.

D. Abstract Art is from the heart and soul, instead of what you get is what you see.

69. Which of the following can best describe the writer’s attitudes towards Abstract Art?

   A. Appreciative       B. Compromising       C. Objective       D. Confused

70. Where can we most properly put the sentence “This is where the beauty of Abstract Art comes about”?

   A. 1                 B. 2                 C. 3               D. 4

The number of big-production movies shot in San Francisco has been declining with the rise of digital technology. Instead of going on location, producers can recreate the city’s look in studios at lower cost with the help of computers. But San Francisco still attracts moviemakers, as its long history of film offers many iconic spots to visit. Here are just a few:

◆Alcatraz: The Enforcer (1976), Escape from Alcatraz (1979), Murder in the First (1995), The Rock (1996)

A federal prison from 1934 to 1963, Alcatraz housed notorious(臭名昭著的) criminals, including Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and James “Whitey” Bulger. Now a national park, Alcatraz offers visitors a chance to tour the prison, including a look at one of the cells portrayed in Clint Eastwood’s Escape from Alcatraz, with the concrete chipped away behind the vent.

◆Fort Point, Golden Gate Bridge: High Anxiety (1977), Foul Play (1978), The Presidio (1988), Dopamine (2003)

Built to protect the San Francisco Bay area from attacks during the Civil War, Fort Point is where James Stewart saved Kim Novak in Vertigo, right at the base. The bridge has also been blown up countless times on film, including in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and Monsters vs. Aliens (2009). The best view is from the north side, looking back to the city.

◆Coit Tower: The Enforcer, Inner Space (1987), The Presidio, Sister Act 2 (1993), The Rock, Dr. Dolittle (1998), Boys & Girls (2003)

The narrow white concrete column at the top of Telegraph Hill has been a part of San Francisco’s skyline since 1993, and offers spectacular views of the bay and the city. Coit Tower has been in the backdrop(背景)of numerous movies filmed in San Francisco.

◆City Hall: A view to a Kill (1985), Class Action (1991), Final Analysis (1992), Bedazzled (2000), The Wedding Planner (2001), Milk (2008)

City Hall has one of the largest domes in the world and it replaced a structure destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. It was used at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Metro City Hall in the 2010 animated movie, Megamind, was an homage(敬意) to San Francisco’s City Hall.

63. Which of the following was built during the Civil War? ________

   B. It was portrayed in Clint Eastwood’s, Escape from Alcatraz.

   C. It is a part of San Francisco’s wonderful skyline.

   D. It was rebuilt after the earthquake in 1906.

65.What can we conclude from the passage? ________

   A. San Francisco is a cherished site for moviemakers.

   B. For Point is related to some notorious criminals in history.

   C. City Hall is the most famous landmark in San Francisco.

Rats that eat high levels of a natural sugar known as fructose(果糖) seem to age faster than other rats--and the same could be true for people who eat too much sweet junk food, Israeli researchers said Monday.
Fructose, found naturally in honey and fruit, is used widely in foods ranging from soft drinks to yogurt(酸奶). But while its sweet taste is popular, the sugar could cause wrinkles and health problems, the researchers said. Dr. Moshe Werman and Boaz Levi of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology fed large amounts of fructose to laboratory rats. Writing in the Journal of Nutrition, they said the fructose-fed rats showed changes in the collagen(胶原蛋白)of their skin and bones.
Collagen, a fibrous protein found in connective tissue, bone and cartilage, basically holds the body together. The loss of collagen is what causes loose skin and deep wrinkles in older people.
The process affected, Werman's team said, is known as "cross linking". "Too much cross-linking reduces flexibility(弹性) and makes the skin stiff and rigid, and these are the conditions that encourage wrinkled skin," Werman said in a statement. He said the same could be true of people, although this has not been shown. "Americans are eating more and more processed foods, such as carbonated drinks, baked goods, canned fruits, jams and dairy products that contain fructose, than Asian people," Werman said. Other studies have shown that high fructose intake can affect how the body handles glucose and increases insulin resistance——which can both be important measures of the tendency toward diabetes(糖尿病).

The rats Werman worked with were fed much more than the average adult person might eat in a day, which is standard in such experiments. The rats were fed 12.5 grams of fructose per kg (2.2 pounds) of weight every day for a year. To compare, a person weighing 154 pounds (70kg) who drinks a quart (liter) of cola consumes about 60 grams of fructose, or 0.8 grams per kg of body weight.

60.If people eat too much fructose, they may have the following signs EXCEPT________.

A. loose skin     B. deep wrinkles     C. a sweet tooth      D. aging faster

61.According to the passage, diabetes is diagnosed (诊断) mainly by measuring________.

  A. the amount of fructose eaten         B. the loss of collagen

  C. the cross linking                  D. glucose and insulin resistance

62. What can we infer from the passage? ________

A. Americans are easier to have diabetes than Asians.

  B. Diabetes can only be controlled, not cured.

  C. People eating too much fructose must have health problems.

  D. It’s abnormal to feed more fructose to the rats than an adult in the experiment.
